Since everyone loves a good picture book, Barbara will be reading the hysterical story of Mother Bruce, written and illustrated by Ryan Higgins. 6 SENIOR SERVICE COUNCIL ESCONDIDO 728 North Broadway, Escondido, Ca. at the Escondido Senior Center The Senior Service Council Escondido (SSCE) was established as a non-profit organization over 40 years ago to address the needs of seniors in the community. Many volunteers work to maintain a high level of service. All services, except computer classes and AARP Driver Safety Program, are offered free of charge and donations are accepted. The following Special Services, Programs, Health Screenings, and Support Groups are held in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building (DEBB) and the main building at the Escondido Senior Center. Appointments are often necessary. SPECIAL SERVICES & PROGRAMS AARP SMART DRIVER PROGRAM...APRIL :00 PM - 5:00 PM....OAK RM This class provides students with a certificate that is valid for three years toward savings on automobile insurance. Participants MUST have completed an AARP 4-hour or 8-hour course BEFORE March 6, AARP members MUST bring their current membership card. Participants may bring their own food and/or drinks to the course. There will be two 10-minute breaks, but no lunch break. Cost is $15 for AARP members or $20 for non-members. Bring check payable to AARP at class time. Plan to arrive 15 min. early for check-in and payment. Call to register. FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION CALL FOR SCHEDULE DEBB FREE TAX PREPARATION for low to moderate income taxpayers of any age, especially those 60 and older. Walk-ins should call first to learn availability. Bring social security card for each taxpayer, picture ID, 2016 tax return and all paperwork required to complete your 2017 Federal and CA state returns. Taxpayers expecting refunds should bring checkbook for direct deposit re fund. Married taxpayers must both be present. Schedule an appointment today. LAST DAY TO FILE IS TUESDAY, APRIL 17! COMPUTER CLASSES/TUTORS......MON. - FRI. Sign-up on April 26, 2018 from 9:00 AM to Noon..DEBB New 4 & 8 week classes start in May Courses include Beginning & Intermediate Windows 10 and imac. Classes run 1.5 hours per week for 8 weeks for a $30 fee. and Internet classes, ipad, and Android Basics for seniors run for 4 weeks for a $15 fee based on instructor availability. Special Word, Excel, Android tablet, and Kindle classes also offered. One-on-one tutoring available on most subjects on an appointment basis for a $10/hour fee. HICAP APRIL 19 & APPOINTMENT REQUIRED.....DEBB Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program provides assistance and objective information to help seniors and disabled persons make informed decisions about health care coverage, Medicare benefits, and supplemental insurance plan options. MONDAYS-WEDNESDAYS :30 AM DEBB Available for transportation to medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, physical therapy, pharmacy, or optometry appointments in Escondido. Escondido low-income seniors, 60 or older, with no other means of transportation may qualify. Must apply in person. Bring proof of income, including most recent bank statement, picture ID and proof of age. Allow one week for approval. North County Transit District NCTD s BREEZE busses, SPRINTER Trains, and COASTER Trains are all accessible to persons with disabilities and seniors over 60 for reduced fares. Housing, facilities, services, and general information assistance for older adults. Office Hours: Monday Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Friday The San Diego Food Bank Senior Food Program provides food and nutrition once a month to eligible low-income seniors 60 years or older. Applicants can enroll in the program in person on distribution day. Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) Program (sdge.com/fera): If you don t qualify for CARE, you may for FERA. You could receive a 12% discount on your energy bill. FERA is only open to households with three or more people.
