1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT IS TO SHARE THE LOVE OF CHRIST, TO EMPOWER PEOPLE TO SERVE, AND TO GLORIFY GOD. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH December 2016 & January 2017 Just a few fallible words about what I think from month to month Rev. Susan Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. Proverbs 15:22 & Proverbs 16:3 Back in 2003 our congregation underwent a thorough Long Range Planning process. Six major goals were identified, each goal having several sub-goals called objectives. Great work was done by a diligent committee, who then wrote in their summary We finally recommend that the plan be updated in 2008 so that it can continue to address our needs and programs. John and I came on the scene in 2008 with little to no knowledge of this long-range planning process; and by the time Remica Gray walked us through it, the congregation and John and I were already moving forward with full momentum. While John and I have lead the officers through strategic planning on a yearly basis to discern direction for that year, long-term goals haven t been constructed and pursued for thirteen years. Consequently, the 2008 update recommended in 2003 is severely overdue. Since John s departure in February, I have wondered how you, the congregation, and I would navigate the transition from co-pastors to solo; you have lost a pastor, but you haven t at the same time. This is unprecedented for a church. I have wondered if the congregation would be able to adjust its expectations in light of losing half its pastoral leadership. And I have, frankly, wondered how I would navigate the personal journey from identity as a co-pastor to a solo head of staff. While the transition has been tense and stressful, it has also been full of joy for me. Having to think about all aspects of this position, after having attended mainly to the areas I enjoy, has been a bit like facing my giants. However, I revel in the newfound freedom to spread my wings of creativity and voice. Ultimately, because there is just one of me now, I grieve having to give less attention to the areas I dearly love such as pastoral care. Since February my responsibilities in preaching have increased 100%, in teaching - 100%, in administration 50%, and we have gone from a full to ½ time administrative assistant. But my journey is only a fraction of our picture. First Presbyterian has had many wonderful accomplishments recently; such as the fall Organ Recital and our Youth attending Montreat. And yet, I sense a significant amount of discontent and fear (for lack of a better term) exist within the congregation. Trying to identify and put concrete words to this discontent has eluded the leadership. When clarity is achieved, what is heard are questions and statements such as: Where are we going? What is our mission? How are we being the hands and feet of Christ in Texarkana? It feels like we re anchor-less, just drifting. I am wondering, what is the source of these feelings? Are the traditional missions and ministries of Angel Quilts, Card Ministry, The Sharing Place, Thanksgiving Boxes, Angel Tree, Advent Concert Series, PW Bible study and service, Downtown Community Garden, Godly Play for Evergreen, the execution of well-crafted traditional worship, etc. not meeting your needs of service and purpose in the name of Christ? The question no one seems to be able to answer is, Why is there a decline in Sunday worship attendance? Has anything significantly shifted or changed in our worship experience? Or is there another reason we aren t identifying? I think we ve got some thinking and pondering and long-range planning to do. Continued on pg. 10

10 Diaconate Missions for 2017 The Diaconate's missions for the 1st and 2nd Quarters in 2017 have been established. The 1st Quarter will be "Socks & Undies Sundays." There will be a collection box outside the Fellowship Hall. We will be collecting underwear & socks for ALL ages. The Sharing Place is in great need of socks especially for men; those who "shop" in the Sharing Place do seem to prefer white socks instead of color. The collection will be begin during first week of January and will end at the month of March. Disbursement will be during the first two weeks of April with the Sharing Place and Randy Sams Center. Any questions about this may be directed to any deacon. The 2nd Quarter mission will be a Fan Drive. The fans will need to be placed out side the Fellowship Hall. If you would like to give money instead of/or in addition to buying a fan, please direct the payment to the Church's Office with a notation that it is for the fan drive. Please bring these from April 1st through the end of May. Purchasing and delivering of the fans will be made during the month of June; hopefully before the weather becomes too hot. If you know of someone who needs a fan, please let us know; or if you know of someone who may know of those in need as Gene Scott knew, please let us know. The Diaconate appreciates all the responses there have been to the missions and pray that you will continue to be the caring congregation that you have shown to be. Tutoring Program 2017 The Evangelism Committee is planning on starting an after-school tutoring program in We will partner with the Texarkana Arkansas School District through their Partners to Achieve Student Success (PASS) program. The plan is to offer children in our neighborhood some after school activities, homework assistance, and possibly an afterschool snack from about 3:30-5:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you are interested in helping in any way, please add your name to the sign-up sheet on the round table outside of the fellowship hall. We are looking for people that are interested in helping children with basic homework (reading, writing, math, etc.), but we will also need people to hang out with the kids and help with snack prep. There is NO training required. If enough people sign up there will be a meeting further down the road for all involved to discuss the program in greater detail. This will be a great opportunity to make a practical and lasting impact on the life of a local child! We cannot move forward with this opportunity if we don t have enough volunteers! If you have any questions please see Michael Gilliland or any member of the Evangelism Committee. Continued from pg. 1 While it is unhealthy for ministers, elders, and/or deacons alone to tell a church who they are and where they are going; a congregation must engage in that process together, it is imperative that leadership help guide a congregation into and through that process. Upon completion, leadership must also help the congregation design, implement, and integrate the results and directives that emerge from the process. In conjunction with the Personnel committee, the ordained and program staff is exploring the possibility of a new in-depth long-range planning process for January/February of With a new year comes new hopes and new beginnings. I believe this process is just what we need right now. As we prepare for this potential process, I would like you to consider a couple of questions: 1) What would you hope to experience at First Presbyterian Church in 2017? 2) A year from now, what would you hope to see our church having achieved? I would love to hear your answers. To share your hope go to I leave you with this passage of Scripture, much like the ones at the top of this article Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand. Prov. 19:21
