5 City and County Government (Florida Living General Information) Ambulance, Fire or Police: Dial 911. Brevard County Sheriff: For non-emergencies (321/ ). Driver s License: You are required by law to get a Florida driver s license within thirty (30) days after becoming employed in Florida, enrolling children in public schools, registering to vote, or applying for homestead exemption. Failure to do so is a traffic violation. You will need to provide proof of Florida vehicle registration, your valid out-of-state license, your social security card, proof of citizenship, proof of residential address, etc. and pass a vision and hearing test. (As a precaution, please check the Website below or call ahead to ensure that you have all the required identification needed.) Licenses may be obtained at the North Brevard Service Complex, corner of South Street and Park Avenue, Titusville. (321/ ). ( License Plates: You must register your vehicles with the County Tax Collector if you are employed in Florida, have children enrolled in public schools or have established residency. To obtain license plates, first have a notary public certify the vehicle identification number and odometer reading on an Odometer Disclosure Statement available at the North Brevard Service Complex, corner of South Street and Park Avenue, Titusville. Take your title or registration, driver s license and proof of insurance to the above address. State law requires that you carry a minimum Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and physical damage liability insurance policy. For further information - (321/ ). ( To register your motor home in the State of Florida: If you own your motor home, take the title, insurance papers and driver s license to the local tag agency (address above). Also, ID number has to be verified by a notary public, police officer or by the nearest tag agency. If there is a lien holder on your motor home, you would need to visit the tag agency and request a Lien Holder Request Form. This gives the tag agency permission to request your existing title be sent to them, thus enabling the State of Florida to issue you a new title for this state. The local tag agency will request the title be transferred to Florida. The Department of Motor Vehicles in Tallahassee will then forward the Florida title to your lienholder. The quoted fees above would apply in this instance also. If you owned your motor home for a period of 6 months or more, you would not be required to pay additional sales taxes to the State of Florida. However, if you had owned the motor home less than 6 months prior to registration in the State of Florida, some Florida taxes may apply. Homestead Exemption: When someone owns property and makes it his or her permanent residence or the permanent residence of his or her dependent, the property owner may be eligible to receive a homestead exemption up to $50,000. The first $25,000 applies to all property taxes, including school district taxes. The additional exemption up to $25,000 applies to the assessed value between $50,000 and $75,000 and only to non-school taxes. To be eligible, you must own and occupy your home and be a legal permanent resident of Florida on or before January 1 st of the year in which you make your claim for exemption. Additional exemptions may be available, check with the property appraiser s office or on their website. Application must be made between January 1 and March 1 each year. Initial application and any changes must be made in person at the Brevard County Appraiser s office, 400 South St., 5 th Floor, Titusville. Information they require for each person that appears on the deed and resides on the property: deed, Florida driver s license, Florida vehicle registration, voter registration, social security card.
