Want to go see that new show at the PAC with me? I ve got an extra ticket to the Packers game on Sunday. Wanna go? I just had the best burger I ve ever eaten. Want to get one with me next weekend? Want to come to my church with me on Sunday? In the words of a famous Sesame Street song, One of these things is not like the other! The difference is, we often invite our friends and family to see a show, or go to a game, or eat some food with us without any fear, awkwardness, or hesitation. But often times, when it comes to inviting our friends or family to church, we clam up, feel awkward, or get too nervous. (continued on next page)
2 2 Mount Olive Messenger March 2017 From the Pastor s Pen Studies show that friendship evangelism, that is, inviting friends, relatives, acquaintances, or neighbors (FRAN) to come to church with you is the most successful form of evangelism, when compared to outreach events, advertising, or mass mailings. Why do you think that is? Because people feel more comfortable coming to a church they ve never been to if they know someone they are close with will be there to talk to them, to introduce them to others, to help them figure out how the service works. However, friendship evangelism is something we don t always do, because it requires us to step out of our comfort zones at times. It s much easier to drop a postcard in the mail, than to bring up matters of religion. At Mount Olive, we want to encourage and equip you to see evangelism (sharing the good news of Jesus) as not just something the pastors, teachers, and evangelism committee do, but as something God commands all of us to do! (Matthew 28:19-20), and that really, inviting a friend to church with you is no more difficult than inviting them out for a burger. To help us do that, we ll be holding a Festival of Friendship during all 4 services the weekend of March 24 th -26th. One of the purposes of a Festival of Friendship is to remind us all how important it is that each of us does the work of an evangelist. Therefore we re challenging and encouraging each Mount Olive member (kids and adults alike!) to Find Your One, meaning, we want each Mount Olive member to invite at least one FRAN to come with you to church for our Festival of Friendship. In the weeks ahead, you ll hear that phrase a lot as we encourage and equip you to make inviting a FRAN to church as simple as inviting them to a Packers game but the results are so much more important! I encourage all of us to: 1) Pray regularly and faithfully for Friendship Sunday, for the committee s work, for God s direction and guidance as you plan to invite a friend to this service. 2) Identify someone you know who is presently without a church home, who is searching for a church home, or who might not even have faith in Christ. This won t always be an easy thing to do. It will take time and thought. Please stay with it and work at it. 3) Invite that person to come with you to our Festival of Friendship. Before you make your
3 March 2017 From the Pastor s Pen Continued Mount Olive Messenger 3 Church News invitation, study John 1:35-51; John 17:20-26; and Matthew 28:18-20 for motivation and direction. Please try to make your initiation in advance, during the next few weeks. 4) Spend time with your invited friend during the weeks ahead. Get to know your friend better, especially in terms of his/her spiritual needs, hopes and fears. Remember in order to have a friend, YOU have to be a friend. March 26 th isn t that far away, and much work still needs to be done by all of us, as a congregation and as individual Christians. We have friends, neighbors, relatives, schoolmates, co-workers, and other acquaintances, many of whom need to know Jesus as their BEST Friend. Please participate in this Festival of Friendship, and Find Your One! It s a wonderful opportunity for us to work together to share our faith in Christ with our friends. May God guide and bless all our efforts to his glory! Serving our Savior with you, Pastor Troy Schreiner Easter Lilies Those wishing to beautify our Easter Worship may do so by signing up starting on the sheet in the Atrium at the Information Center. 8 8 Mount Olive Messenger March 2017 Church News Mount Olive Church Library News Featured This Month Nonfiction: Over 200 Questions Children Ask About Prayer, Heaven, and Angels. Don't be caught off guard when your kids ask the most amazing questions. For example, "Why do we say Amen when we're done praying?" "Are the streets in heaven real gold or just painted with gold?" "How many angels are in heaven?" This book contains thoughtful answers to these and other related questions children have asked. To back up your answers, the authors provide key and related verses from the Bible and give notes to parents, where appropriate. Hearts of Fire: Eight Women in the Underground Church and Their Stories of Costly Faith, by the voice of the martyrs. This book describes eight courageous women from eight very different backgrounds from across the globe -- Pakistan, India, Romania, Former Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia. Each woman shares having had similar experiences of hardship, subjugation, and persecution, all because of their faith in Christ. People of every age can gain new strength and hope for their own times of crisis and trial as they read these inspiring stories. Fiction: An Untamed Land, by Lauraine Snelling. Book 1 of the Red River of the North series. The author brings to life 1880's America and that era's immigrant experience in this historical novel that follows the Bjorklund family, who left behind the fjords of Norway for the promise of free land. From seasickness aboard ship, to lack of adequate nourishment, to squalid and crowded conditions, to the overwhelming impact of bustling New York City, to stuffy, smelly coal-fired locomotive-pulled trains, to rough Conestoga wagon living as they travel across the prairies, to the howling rage of North Dakota winters. The new land promises a rich heritage for their children, and here they hope to build a good life, but it doesn't come without struggles and hardships that test their faith.
