Open Forward in Faith Meetings: If you ve not yet attended a Forward in Faith Informational Meeting, you are welcome to attend the meeting being hosted by Pastor and Sarah Raasch on Sunday, October 8, at 1 p.m. in the Teen Room. (Pastor promises that you ll be home before the Packers game!) Other open meetings will take place in the teen room on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, October 12th at 6:30 p.m. Walk-ins to any of these meetings are welcome! Next Weekend (October 14-16) is Forward in Faith Sunday. At the conclusion of each service, we will hear the most up-to-date information about our Capital Stewardship Campaign and also watch the newly created Forward in Faith video. All those who have not attended an informational meeting will receive their personalized Forward in Faith Campaign packet. (Please plan to pick up your packet to help Mount Olive save money on postage.) In addition, those who have questions, or want to provide further input on the building plans or campaign, are invited to attend a question and answer session in the Teen Room after each service. Please join your Mount Olive family for this special event! Holy Communion Change: Due to the Forward in Faith services, Holy Communion will be celebrated on the following weekend, October 21-23, rather than October All Three Adult Bible Classes will take place at their regular times and places on Sunday, October 15th. Thank you to those who helped make our new Forward in Faith banner: Louise and Mike Kesting, Michele Pfeifer, Mary Jo Van Dyke, and Sue Volkman. SCRIP Update: On the weekend of September 24th, Mount Olive sold a record $21,535 of SCRIP! In addition, 5 new families enrolled in the program and received a free drink at the Coffee Café. Remember, you can now direct your SCRIP dollars to the Forward in Faith campaign. Now is a great time to enroll in the SCRIP program! Saturday Service SCRIP: The SCRIP desk is open after the Saturday service on the first Saturday of the month (October 7th). Stop and shop today! 14

3 LWMS: Join us for a night of fellowship, refreshments, and an opportunity to learn more about missions on October 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the School Library. This is a great night to get a taste of LWMS and to get to know our Mount Olive sisters. Bring a friend or bring two! Adult Volleyball begins in the Mount Olive gym on Sunday, October 15th at 3:00 p.m. Men and women, high school age and older, are welcome. We ll meet every Sunday at 1:00 or 3:00 p.m. (opposite the Packers game.) Join us for some fun and exercise! Junior Youth Group is a fun, active group of 5th-8th grade students. Let s celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with a Reformation Party! Join us on Sunday, October 22nd from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Mount Olive Fellowship Hall. We welcome new members, and you are always welcome to invite friends! Snow Birds: The time of year is quickly approaching when some of our members leave for the winter. Please let us know the time period you will be gone and your wintering address. Mission Partner s Annual Bake Sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 11th & 12th. The bake sale is sponsored by Girl Pioneers & Mission Partners. All proceeds benefit Christian Aid & Relief. Bakers, please sign up in the Atrium for muffins, breads, candies, pies. Items should be packaged (one dozen per package, where appropriate). Please deliver your goodies to the Atrium by NOON on Saturday, November 11th. Courtyard Decorations: Could you help beautify our courtyard this autumn? Pumpkins (medium or large - the tiny ones don't show up) or large gourds (again, the little ones don't show up well) would be great. Just bring your items to the upper courtyard (the one just off the parking lot). Please put them INSIDE the courtyard, near the windows, and our courtyard person will arrange them in both courtyards. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and last about an hour. All Mount Olive members who are high school age and older are welcome to join. Childcare during practice can be arranged. 4 Mount Olive s Fall Festival: Everyone is invited to join us for Mount Olive s 3rd annual Fall Festival on Sunday, October 29th, from 2-4 p.m. Fall Festival is fun for all ages, including events like Trunk or Treat, a chili cook-off contest, crafts for kids, carnival games, delicious food like donuts and caramel apples, and hot drinks like cocoa and apple cider! Don t miss out on the fun, and be sure to invite your friends and family! (Don t worry...the Packers don t play that day!) For more information, please see the October Messenger. United Way Campaign: The United Way campaign is underway in our community. If your workplace participates in the United Way campaign, you may have a Donor Choice which allows you to designate a qualified 501(c)(3) agency to receive your United Way donation. Although Mount Olive does not qualify for United Way funds, you may choose other WELS affiliated organizations like Wisconsin Lutheran Child and Family Services or Christian Life Resources, Inc. If you have questions about your participation in such a program, check your local United Way guidelines, ask your Human Resources Director at work or info@wlcfs.org. 16

5 Area WELS Announcements Host Families needed for the MLC Choir: St. Paul Lutheran Church, Appleton, is looking for host families to assist with housing and transportation needs for 33 members of the MLC Choir when they come to sing for the St. Paul 150th Anniversary. The choir will arrive Saturday, October 14th. Dinner will be provided for them Saturday night in St. Paul s gym. Afterward, the host family would pick them up, house them overnight, and then return them for the 8 a.m. Sunday church service. Please consider assisting if you have extra room in your home. You may call the St. Paul Parish Office at to sign up. 40th Anniversary of Pastor Ronald Szep: Please join the members of St. Luke, (705 E. Greenfield Drive, Little Chute) as they celebrate Pastor Ronald Szep's 40 years of ministry on October 29th. Worship service at 9:00 a.m. with a reception to follow at 10:00 a.m. GriefShare: Adults who have experienced the death of someone close are invited to join us for our next session of GriefShare. GriefShare is a weekly Bible-based, Christ-centered support group for men and women who have experienced the death of someone close. You will learn valuable information through a series of videos and discussions on how to deal with the emotions and challenges that come when a loved one dies. The GriefShare group meets at St. Matthew Lutheran Church located at 129 S. Mason Street, Appleton. Our next session begins on Saturday, October 21st from 9-11 a.m. You may begin anytime during our 14-week session. St. Matthew Lutheran Church s 7th Annual Fall Festival: Attend our Fall Festival with over 40 vendors. The admission is free and there are drawings to win a study Bible, gift cards, and many door prizes. There will also be 5-10 minute chair massages available for free. 6 FVL News THE FVL FALL BAND & CHOIR CONCERT will be held Sunday 10/8 at 1:30 p.m. All are invited to this free concert. A freewill offering will be taken. FVL THEATRE is performing Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play on Thursday 10/18 at 7 p.m., Saturday 10/21 at 4 p.m., and Sunday 10/22 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at fvlhs.org. 8TH GRADERS AND THEIR PARENTS are invited to FVL s 8th Grade Student/ Parent Welcome Night on Monday, 10/30 from 5-7:30 p.m. Join us for food, fellowship, and fun. While students enjoy games, competitions, and socializing, parents can attend 20 minute informational sessions on topics like STEM Academy, the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program, Tuition Assistance, Co-curricular Opportunities, and more! All interested families should register online at fvlhs.org. Pastor James Humann, retired WELS pastor, invites you to join him as he hosts his fifth tour to the Holy Land. The tour is for ten days and leaves March 12, This is a beautiful time of year in the Holy Land and you will be back home again for Holy Week and Easter. The tour includes Bethlehem where Jesus was born, Nazareth where he was raised, the Jordan River where he was baptized, Galilee where he spent much of his ministry, the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed, and Jerusalem where he was tried before Pontius Pilate, was crucified and rose again from the dead. Take a ride on the Sea of Galilee, visit the ancient city of Jericho, and if there is time, swim in the Dead Sea. This tour of a lifetime still has limited space available. 7 WELS News & Notes Special Forward in Christ Issue Celebrates the Reformation In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, the October issue of Forward in Christ (FIC), the synod s official publication, will focus on Martin Luther and the biblical teachings he rediscovered grace alone, faith alone, Scripture alone, in Christ alone. This anniversary is not just a review of past events. It s different, says Rev. John Braun, executive editor of Forward in Christ. We thank God for the gospel we still possess today a power that sustains us just as it sustained others throughout history. It s all about Christ! We still treasure his grace, and we desire to share that grace with the world. Special features include a look at Luther s far-reaching influence, a history lesson on Katie Luther, and a focus on the heart of the Reformation message: We are saved by grace alone through faith in Christ. Another feature highlights comments about being Lutheran from leaders of churches around the world that are in fellowship with WELS. Monthly columns and features will also have a Reformation theme. The Confessions of faith article introduces a woman born in Eisleben, Germany, when it was communistcontrolled and tells her journey of faith. The Heart to heart parenting column shares perspectives from two dads about ways to teach children about the Reformation. Besides the normal 36 pages, the issue features an added keepsake pull-out insert that includes a timeline on the development of Lutheranism as well as quotes from FIC readers about what it means to be Lutheran. As I read all of these comments, I stand in grateful praise to God for what he has done in bringing these believers to be signposts pointing to Christ, says Braun. As you read their comments, I suggest you consider how many times they point to the certainty of salvation in Christ. That s a message we strive to share in every issue of Forward in Christ.
