2 Kjære Summer is coming we hope. This weather has been so up and down temperature wise. Flowers have been beautiful. My bridal wreath is in full bloom and the peonies are about ready to burst open. Don t forget that the 4 th of July parade will be held in Kenosha on the Sunday, June 28 th at 1 pm. We will be having our float in the parade again this year. Good advertising for our lodge. The theme is hero of Kenosha and I chose Charles Durkee who was a senator from this region and lived in Kenosha and still have the Durkee mansion in town. We will decorate the float like his living room. Need people to ride on the float with us. Another event coming up will be our annual picnic at my house th St. PP at noon on Saturday, August 1 st. Bring a dish to pass. Have plenty of chairs. The first meeting this fall will be Monday, September 14 th at 6:30 pm St. John s Lutheran Church. Will have a program about Norwegian artists. 4 Adopt-A-School The last presentation for the school year was on Tuesday, May 12 at the Pleasant Prairie School for Jill Jensen s first graders. Gerry Lachman told about and showed picture of the children s parade in Oslo for the Syttende Mai holiday. Celia Walther told what the day means and why it is celebrated. It is the day and year 1814 when Norway finally had a constitution that established it as a sovereign state and constitutional monarchy ruled by principles of liberty and democracy. It is a day associated with flags, parades, marching bands, hoorays, ice cream, balloons, parties and fireworks. The people wear their colorful folk costumes. The Norwegians have a good reason to celebrate after 400 years of ruling by Denmark. Jill showed video of the celebration and also the Midsummer event of June 23 rd. For their craft project they colored a picture of the Norwegian flag. The food treat was lefse with butter and brown sugar. Most of the children liked it. So until fall and the new school year, Gerry and Celia take a break. If any Sons of Norway members would like to help with a presentation, call Gerry or Celia. It is fun to share our Norwegian heritage and culture. Written by Celia Walther Book Club News Our book club met on Thursday April 30 th 7:00 pm at Gerry Lachman s hone. We discussed Rebecca Rewards written by Lauraine Snelling. We had an interesting discussion on the immigrants who had come to Red River Valley town of Blessing in North Dakota and how they were all related as well as neighbors. We decided to take the summer off and will resume sometime in September. Sickness and Distress: Gerry Lachman had surgery on May 20 h. Hospitalized May 18 to May 28 Audrey Walsh had hip replacement May 28 to May 31. Greg Rismoen was hospitalized at St. Luke s Milwaukee and passed away on Monday June 22, Our deepest sympathy goes out to Carolyn Rismoen and family on the passing of Greg Rismoen. He will be deeply missed by all of us at Sons of Norway. Hope for all get well wishes and speedy recovery. All are home and recuperating. 4

TUBFRIM Save used stamps and expired or used phone cards for Tubfrim to help disabled children and youth in Norway. Cut leaving about ¼ inch around each stamp on all sides. Bring them to a lodge meeting. Written by Greg Rismoen Eric Axner, a Swede, was fishing off Norway s Lofoten Islands in a boat with friends and caught a 7 foot long, 122 lb. (16 stone) halibut. The giant predator struck this 4 lb. coalfish bait dangling from a float, kick starting a battle between men and beast. The 24-yearold Swede fought the gigantic fish for more than an hour. Because the halibut was so big it couldn t be pulled out of the water for photos, so Eric secured it to the boat using rope and jumped into the water in his wetsuit instead. After posing for pictures holding the halibut, Mr. Axner weighed and measured the fish before releasing it back into the ocean. Mr. Axner said jumping into the water gave him a new level of respect for the fish. The fish was so powerful that it took me an hour to get the better of it. By the time I got the fish to the boat my arms were aching and my back was pretty tired as well. 5

Recipe Corner Rhubarb Torte Crust 1 cup flour 1 cup brown sugar ¾ cup oat meal 1 tsp cinnamon ½ cup melted butter Filling 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 3 TBSP corn starch 1 tsp vanilla 4 cups rhubarb Mix all crust ingredients together. Put half in the Bottom of the 9 x 9 pan. Cook all the filling ingredients together Until it comes to a full boil. Put the rhubarb on crust. Pour filling 6
