1 LHS School Newsletter, Issue #6 January 17, 2017 Lutheran High School LHS Nativity Play and Choir Concert By now all of our students and parents should have received a copy of the 2nd quarter report card. Many of our students did quite well and are to be commended on their excellent academic performance. Congratulations to all of our students who earned a place on the 2nd quarter honor rolls. For those students who did not meet their academic goals for the quarter, this is an excellent time to improve study habits, seek help from teachers, and review personal organizational skills. If you have any questions concerning any grades on the report card, please contact the teacher directly. As always we are appreciative of the many LHS parents and family members who volunteer their time and talents with our school. Before the break, our students and faculty enjoyed a wonderful Christmas lunch. Thank you to the many parents who volunteered to serve lunch and to the families who provided entrees, desserts or sides for our school lunch. Thank you as well to the many families who sent cards, gifts, or contributed toward the PTL s Christmas fund. On behalf of all of the faculty and staff, I thank you. Congratulations to our school choir, directed by Mr. Adrian Scriber, and to our theatre class, directed by Mrs. Elizabeth Robin, for a wonderful Nativity performance. 2 Chapel News This year s Chapel Theme is In Christ Alone: I Stand. The theme is rooted in the entire book of Philippians, with special emphasis on Chapter 1:21: To Live is Christ. and Chapter 3:9: Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ. Thank you to all who shared the good news of Jesus Christ and his Incarnation this Advent and Christmas season: Pastor C.J. from 1st English, Ms. Loughmiller from LHS, and Pastor Schutt from Atonement. We worship as a school every Tuesday starting at 9:26 a.m. All of our Gryphon family is invited to attend! This year's Chapel theme is: In Christ Alone: I Stand Love: Our loving God no longer sees us in our sin, but instead the Righteousness of CHRIST ALONE. Honor: The status of honor is restored to us in CHRIST ALONE. Serve: CHRIST ALONE is the perfect servant and our example. Mission Team News The Mission Team is now taking applications for the 2017 Summer Mission Trip to Camp Lutherhaven in Coeur d'alene Idaho to work with special needs kids at Champ Camp. The dates for the mission trip are: June See Mr. Taylor for more information and application packets. 40th Annual Gryphon Gala Saturday, March 18th Tailgatin with the Gryphons is the theme for the 40th Annual Gryphon Gala to be held at Atonement Lutheran School s gym on Saturday, March 18th. This is Lutheran High s largest fundraiser of the year and unites LHS alumni and Lutheran education supporters with our current students and their families. The success of this event depends on the contributions of all parties. The Gryphon Gala includes both a silent auction and a verbal auction. The gala is being chaired by a group of LHS alumni. You as parents can help support this event by asking businesses you frequent to donate gift cards or gift certificates to benefit your child s school. It is a great way for these businesses to promote themselves and gift certificates are one of the most popular items that gala attendees like to bid on. We have attached to this a letter that you may share with anyone who donates. Copies are also available in the LHS office. Volunteer opportunities will also be available the day before to set-up and the day of to help oversee the various booths. If you are interested in volunteering please contact our PTL President Jennifer Williams (jenmarie535@yahoo.com). Our students also look forward to volunteering at this event. It is a privilege for them to do so, and they must be a student in good standing. Ms. Fields will be coordinating student volunteers through student council. Each of our LHS clubs will also be donating gift baskets to be auctioned.

It costs you (and us) nothing, and it's just like shopping on Amazon normally, but you get to do a world of good. To sign up, go to and search for Lutheran High School of Greater New Orleans. Once you add us as your chosen charity, Amazon will do the rest! The only real catch is that you have to start your shopping at smile.amazon.com (which means that you have to update your bookmark). Everything else is the exact same Amazon shopping experience. Many thanks to the many parents who have volunteered at lunch and other events this year! Special thanks to our PTL President, Jennifer Williams! We appreciate all of our Lutheran High School students and families! If you would like to sign up to participate in future school events, please contact Jennifer Williams at or via at jenmarie535@yahoo.com. A reminder to all student athletes and their parents the eligibility rule for the fall semester is GPA based. Student athletes must have a C average. This review will occur in early August after summer school grades are posted. Spirit Buses to Away Basketball Games ATHLETIC ADMISSION PRICES - To help cover the cost of officials, schools charge admission to athletic competitions. The majority of schools, including LHS, will charge the following: $5.00 for Adults, $3.00 for Students, Free for 5 and under. The group performed for our faculty and students at First English Church on Thursday, January 5th. Afterwards, the group enjoyed king cake and visited with some of our students. The Wind Ensemble tours annually, sharing God s gift of music with a wide variety of audiences. Recent tours have included stops to Missouri, Illinois, and Florida. Recently, the Wind Ensemble traveled to New York City to perform in a showcase concert for the 2016 New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall. Afterwards, our cheerleaders led everyone in a spirited round of Christmas carols. Many, many thanks to the members of First English Church and to our parents who volunteered their time serving lunch, and to the many families who shared their cooking talents with us!

10 ACT TEST DATES ACT TEST DATES Registration must be completed online at Lutheran High is a test center and is available for three (3) of the six (6) test dates. Students needing accommodations should contact Ms. Robin and begin the application process as soon as possible. For more information, refer to the ACT website. ACT TEST DAY REMINDER at LUTHERAN HIGH If your child is taking the ACT at Lutheran High this Saturday, December 10th, he/she should arrive by 7:45 a.m. when the doors open.
