I hope that spring has sprung in everyone s household and this note finds you all doing fabulously! In the month of April, I had the privilege of being part of a group that distributes blankets to those in need. My daughter has made these very easy tie blankets for years, and has been part of an organization that distributes them throughout Orange County and parts of Los Angeles. After taking part in this wonderful day of distributing these blankets, I began thinking about our residents here at Belmont Village, of which so many have very large serving hearts. I also thought of BTAC (Burbank Temporary Aid Center) here in Burbank, a wonderful local organization that provides for those in need right here locally. With the combination of the two, what a service that we could provide! Beginning right away, we would like to begin to collect donations of 2 yards of fleece material. This material can be a solid, print, or anything you would like! Once the material is received, cutting will be done. Jeanna will have tie classes starting in June and we can tie these blankets to finish them off. They can then be distributed to BTAC. As someone who has NO ability to sew, knit, or do anything else by hand, I can say that these tie blankets are extremely easy and anyone can participate! If you would like to donate 2 yards of fleece material, please bring it in to the attention of Jeanna or Mary Jane. Thank you, everyone, and have a fantastic May! Mary Jane We Remember Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It is a day to honor men and women who have died in military service.

7 Health From the Wellness Center The Secret to Healthy Aging Who doesn t wish for a fountain of youth? Magical youth-restoring springs exist only in legend, but science does point to a few simple, healthy habits that can help extend your life. Don t Slow Down Exercise and physical activity is where the strongest evidence lies, not just for reducing mortality, but also for across-the-board benefits. There are other benefits as well: fewer heart risks, improved sleep, less depression and pain, better bone strength and fewer falls. Do anything that sounds like fun: walk, ride stationary bike, dance. Go Mediterranean With its emphasis on fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain and healthy fats it s recommended by many physicians. Plus, it s delicious. Ban butter switch to unsaturated olive oil. Switch to fish twice a week, substitute a serving of salmon, herring for red meat. Load up on veggies leave more room on your plate for vegetables like broccoli, kale, carrots and tomatoes. Stay Connected When family moves away and friends move on, you can lose touch and get isolated. Don t let that happened. Remember, your family member or friend hasn t changed; it s only their home address that has changed. Build a support network through your community and religious organizations and remember you will always have your Belmont family to cheer you up and help you.
