1 Belmont Village at West University 2929 W. I remember when I was in elementary school I would look at the clock and watch as the seconds slowly ticked by. It seemed like the bell was never going to ring and I was in a horror movie that kept time from moving. I was anxious for time to hurry up and also anxious to grow up. Now I wish that time would slow down and that my birthdays didn t come around so quickly. I don t even long for the work week to go by quickly so the weekend will get here. I just want everything to slow down. Our world is so busy and chaotic and everyone is always in a rush here or there. We are always looking for more convenient and quick ways to get anything done so we can do more useless things. We shop online, we eat less so we don t have to take as much time exercising, and we use remote controls so we don t have to get up and turn things on and off. We have vacuum cleaners that vacuum by themselves and dishwashers so we don t have to wash dishes by hand. The list goes on and on. Of course, many of the things that we have created as a human race do make things easier which enables us to have more quality time with our family. The computer is an amazing invention that has bolstered ideas and creativity. In 2013 almost 84% of households had a computer of some kind. That number is undoubtedly higher now and will continue to rise. One thing that makes the computer practical and more usable is having Internet access, and wireless Internet access (WiFi) is by far the most popular way to access the Internet. In December of 2014 Belmont Village installed WiFi throughout the entire building and now you can access it from anywhere in the building. If you are interested in using our WiFi, please ask the Concierge for network and password information. Also take time to read about our WiFi on the sign posted between the Great Room and Josephine s Kitchen. I hope you all find it very helpful to have WiFi and that it is just one convenience that makes your 2015 a great year. Happy surfing! Learning all about s!

3 Movie Watch Popcorn Pick: Tootsie When actor Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) can t land any roles, he decides to make a drastic change: he auditions as a woman. Neighborhood Resident Helen Copeland - President The Resident Council meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in Town Hall. Our next Resident Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27. Welc me New Residents New Resident Tea Join us the first Tuesday of every month at 3 p.m. in the Great Room to welcome our new residents! Tuesday, Jan. 6 Tree trimming! December was a month that naturally focused on the holiday season. We learned quite a bit about the origin of many of the traditions surrounding these wonderful holidays. For example, why do we have Christmas trees? How did the tradition of gift giving originate and why do we hang ornaments? We also learned about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the way in which New Year s is celebrated in various countries around the world. What a month! Fun with Monica! We did a whole lot of celebrating in the Neighborhood during the month of December. Between the parties, caroling, and holiday themed craft projects, we sure were busy! Of course, we also went on a special evening scenic drive to see some of the Christmas lights around town. Thanks to the help of family members, we also enjoyed our first of many movie nights in the Town Hall, with popcorn, soda, and a viewing of Miracle on 34th St. We definitely ended 2014 with a bang!

7 Health Positive Thinking Last month Dianne Cooper, our Outside Sales and Marketing Community Relations Representative, facilitated our Health Education Class. Her topic was How Positive Thinking Can Improve Your Health. At the end of the class, the residents were asked three questions: What brings you joy in this season of your life? What things are you learning in this season of your life? How is this season of your life different than you thought it would be? Here are some of the answers that the residents gave during our discussion: Moving here was an adventure and each day afterward has been an adventure. There is so much to do and so many people who really care about us - staff and other residents. The people on our hallway are really our neighbors and they look out for us. I feel I can live each day to the fullest. I feel peace. It took me a while to adjust but now I am very peaceful about my life. I am surrounded by my family (with photographs) so even though they are not here (they are all over the world) I can see them. They selected Belmont for me because they love and care about me. They did a good job. I feel protected. I feel content with my life. It never occurred to me that I would ever live in an Assisted Living community. I figured I would always live at home. If I had stayed at home the only activity I would have had would have been going to church once a week. The rest of the time I would have been alone. This is so much better. I like to look for the good in each day. I like options of learning new things and meeting new people. I feel content with my life. Some of the staff members are really good at making you forget your troubles. There is so much to do here. The activities are plentiful and enjoyable. I am glad I live here. Dianne and the residents showing off their Happy Smile cookies. Community News Thank you to South Main Baptist Church for spending their time caroling to our residents. Thank you, St. Vincent s parish, for coming over to carol during our dinner! St. Vincent s Children s Choir of 60 kids put on a great show for our residents.

8 The Belmont Scene A friendly game of pool. Thank you to our firemen at station 31 for being there for us when we need them! We enjoyed all the festivities at the Harris County Precinct One Senior Holiday Celebration. Ruth, Jo and Shirley decorated cupcakes. These were scarecrows! Fukumi taught us all how to eat with chop sticks at the Silver Palace. Lynn, Ruth and Helen seeing colors and shapes with Qbitz! 2929 W. Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX ALF
