According to the early Roman calendar, it was the first month and was called Martius. The ancient Romans later made Jan. 1 the beginning of the year, and March became the third month on the calendar. March has always had 31 days. Its name honors Mars, the Roman God of War. The winter ends with March, and then comes spring. Spring in the northern half of the world begins on March 19, 20 or 21. It is the day when the sun is directly over the equator. March can either feel wintery or springy, with as many blustery, windy days as there are mild, sunny days. In the northern hemisphere, the animals end their hibernation and many plants come to life again in March. The sap flows in the trees again, and the buds begin to show up. Bears, woodchucks and chipmunks leave their hibernating spots. People begin to look for the first robin, for the beginning of spring s arrival. state and religious holidays celebrated. * Nebraskans celebrate the admission of their state to the Union on March 1. * Texas celebrates March 2 as the anniversary of its independence from Mexico. * On March 4, the people of Pennsylvania commemorate the granting of the state s charter to William Penn in * The Irish celebrate March 17 as the feast day of St. Patrick. * In Maryland, March 25 is set apart for a celebration of the arrival of the first Maryland colonists in * The Jewish festival of Purim usually occurs in March. It is held on the day corresponding to the 14th day of Adar on the Hebrew calendar. Our Management Team There are no national holidays in March, but there are important Judith Uy-Villaruz Executive Director

6 Shirley Winter & Betty Van Acker Introducing Your Resident Council Please help us welcome President Shirley Winter and Vice President Betty Van Acker to the Resident Council! We are so happy to have you both represent our residents. Thank you to all the residents who participated in our elections. We appreciate all your support! Are You Ready for a Slam Dunk?! For all you college basketball fans, March Madness is quickly approaching! The games begin March 17 and last all the way through the beginning of April. Stay tuned in regards to what games we will be showing and when. Keep your eyes open for flyers around the building. Let the games begin! Memory Program Coordinator Hi, I m Anna Liza, and I have worked as a nurse at Belmont since August 2007 and have grown in this community. In the Philippines, I majored in Physical Education. I love sports! I love to dance and sing! I am active, full of energy and love activities. As the new MPC, I can incorporate these two backgrounds and share my love of music and art with physical and mental activities to help our bodies and minds function as one. I can educate our residents families and staff to help understand our residents needs. Circle of Friends News Our Circle of Friends group is getting bigger! Last month we welcomed our new residents, Bart M, David M and Lourens P. Participating in Circle of Friends program gives our residents opportunities to make friends and enjoy days filled with fun and therapeutic activities. Engaging in physical exercise is one of our residents favorite daily activities. Zumba classes and Boot Camp are a big hit! Elsie welcoming our new resident, Lourens. Anna Liza Vanderhoof Neighborhood News Love was in the air in the Neighborhood in February. We had a great time celebrating Valentine s Day and made delicious strawberry cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries. The weather is warming up, and the residents are excited about spending more time outdoors in our beautiful courtyard. Above, you see our ladies doing flower arrangements in the Gazebo. We do those weekly, so please stop by the neighborhood and enjoy the fresh flowers.
7 Nerissa s Notes Let s talk about Pneumonia Pneumonias are the most common fatal infection, and incidence is increased in the elderly population. Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lungs affecting the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli caused by a virus or bacteria. The signs/symptoms are fatigue, fever, chills, cough, runny nose, dyspnea or shortness of breath, and chest pain. Pneumonia can cause coughing of blood, or sputum can be rusty color. It starts when bacteria enter the lungs with inhalation or the blood stream if other parts of the body are infected. The bacteria live in the upper respiratory tract. This triggers the immune system to respond by sending the white blood cells to attack the bacteria. They kill the organisms but release cytokins, which results in general activation of the immune system, resulting in fever, chills, and fatigue. Bacteria and fluid leaked from the blood vessels fill the air sacs of the lungs and impair the oxygen. If the infection goes into the blood stream, septic shock can result and damage the other systems like the brain, kidneys or heart. It s important to get a pneumonia vaccination. If you have not been vaccinated yet, now is the time. Love Boat Valentine s Celebration! High School Sweet Hearts!
