BOBCAT BASEBALL ASSISTS WITH FIRST AUBURN BACKPACK EFFORTS (L to R) Bobcat baseball player John Tellini assist Rev. Cannon in moving some of the Crispix. Auburn elementary students will once again benefit from the Auburn Backpack Program in The individual backpacks are packed at St. Paul s Lutheran Church by area volunteers and then distributed through Calvert Elementary each Friday starting September 2 for the school year. The first delivery of food for the program arrived in Auburn on Wednesday according to Peru State coordinator, Elaine Hanson, the Peru State First Lady. Two pallets of boxes, which will equate to six weeks of meals, will be placed in 45 backpacks. Assisting with the efforts were Bobcat baseball head coach Wayne Albury and pitcher John Tellini (Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Albury noted, As this was the first week of school, we did not have as many people to assist with the unloading. But, this is such a worthwhile effort to help Auburn students. Hanson noted the food costs of each backpack has gone up this year from $6.62 to $7.72. She also noted that Peru State s Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and Red Cross Club will be assisting with the project in February and April respectively. The overall coordinator for the program is the Rev. Emily Cannon from the Auburn First United Methodist Church. Other officers for the Auburn Backpack Program include: Secretary Una Rose Davison, Treasurer Daryl Wellman, Group Volunteer Coordinator Joyce Knipe, Calvert School Coordinator Pam Knapp, Newsletter/Marketing Gina Long, and Liaison Coordinator Margaret Hoffmeyer. The Auburn Backpack program provides a wonderful opportunity for Peru State student-athletes to give back to the community and become aware of needs in the community they call home for nine months, noted Hanson. Concluding, she added, While the athletes are contributing to an important cause in our community, they are also developing friendships within the community. The baseball team has picked up some loyal Bobcats fans along the way just another benefit of service!

Peru State had defeated the Pioneers a week earlier in the regular season. This fall, the team will have a good mix of returners and newcomers as there are 11 of each. 4 2016 FOOTBALL Season Preview The 2016 Peru State Bobcats football team will look to begin the new campaign right where they left off last season. The Bobcats completed the season with a 7-4 overall record and won their final three games of the year which earned them a tie for second in the North Division of the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Cats will try to continue their winning trend and improve on a successful 2015 season. The Bobcats will return eight starters each on offense and defense, but will also need to replace 13 seniors from last year s squad, many of whom played key roles a season ago. Coach Schneider s Outlook Schneider is cautiously optimistic going into the fall, but knows full well that the competition in the Heart will be tough every single week, especially having six teams ranked in the first preseason poll (includes those receiving votes). Our guys are excited to get the season going. We had a great offseason and are ready to go. stated Schneider. He added, We have a nucleus of players back. This is my fifth year as head coach and this is as much experience as we ve had. In my tenure as head coach, when you have experience and depth it usually pays off and is likely for success. For example, this year we have numerous starters back on both sides of the ball. Perhaps our least experienced area will be in our kicking game, stated Schneider. Continuing, Schneider said, My view on successful football teams starts with staying healthy. Also, we have to win the big play battle and the turnover ratio. Schneider concluded, We had a successful 2015 when we stayed healthy and we anticipate having a successful 2016 and gain more success in the Heart. The Peru State Bobcat football team opened their 2016 campaign in a similar fashion as they did in The Cats handed Central Methodist (CMU) a loss in Fayette, Mo., August 27, Last year, Peru State topped the Eagles in the season opener in Peru. 5 FB Hosted Three-Day Camps One hundred high school and youth football players attended one-day camps recently whichwere hotsted by the Peru State football program during the month of June. All three camps were directed by Bobcat assistant coach Lou Varley with assistance from other Peru State coaches - Andy Kohls, Derek Derr, and Jeff Reed. The first camp was the High School Skills Camp. It was held June 15 and was comprised of individual technique sessions followed by group work. The campers received detailed individual instruction during the contact camp which will have them better prepared for the fall season. On June 16, an offensive and defensive line camp was held providing those in attendance with a variety of techniques in order to further develop their skills. A non-contact Youth Skills Camp was conducted on June 17. Campers received detailed instruction in all facets of football. The coaches did share some of the NAIA Champions of Character values each day.

WOMEN S GOLF Up-Coming Season The Bobcat golfers return all but one from last season. Emily Hausmann (Columbus), one of Peru State s top golfers of the past three seasons, will be graduating in December and has decided to forego her senior campaign. This experienced group will be led by new head coach Katie Potter, a former member of the Peru State golf team. As a senior, she was named to the Heart of America Athletic Conference Women s Golf First Team. Potter is replacing former head coach Mark Ritchie who retired after one season. Returners The team will be led by seniors Marisa Pribnow (Lincoln), a three-year Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) All-Conference golfer, and Jessica Weickert (Beatrice), a two-time Heart All-Conference golfer. In addition, Pribnow and Weickert were named the Heart Women s Golfer of the Week at several different points during the season. Lindsay Harlow (Dawson). Schedule Peru State will play in four different invites this fall. The Cats will first tee it up at the Buena Vista Invite in Storm Lake, Iowa on September 10. In addition, Peru State will participate in the Northwestern Invite, Midland University/College of St. Mary Invitational, and the William Penn University Classic. Coach Potter Potter is anxious for the season to get started. Potter commented, I am very pleased to have been considered and then appointed as Peru State s head women s golf coach. I am looking forward to the opportunity to coach these young ladies and lead the Bobcat golfers in the right direction, both on the course and in the classroom. The other Bobcat golfers returning will be juniors Hannah Baldacci (Norfolk), Cathleen Marsh (Bellevue), and Charleen Marsh (Bellevue) as well as sophomores Emily Whipple (Lincoln), Emily Shevlin (Columbus), and

BOBCATS ON ESPN3 The Heart of America Athletic Conference has announced its broadcast schedule for the 2016 football season with all 12 teams hosting one contest. The games will be carried live on ESPN3, KSMO and Mediacom, with kickoff for all games scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CT. Entering its second season in partnership with its broadcast partners as well as the Niles Media Group, Heart Football will once again be showcased on Saturday mornings throughout the 2016 campaign following a debut slate that included six of 13 games being decided by one touchdown or less. The 2015 season was one of the most exciting in the history of the conference, and having it available to an expanded audience was a huge step forward, said commissioner Lori Thomas. The 2016 season promises to provide another thrilling slate of games that we hope will continue to promote the student-athletes of our fine institutions. The 2016 television schedule will kick off in the Kansas City area as Avila hosts Graceland at the Zarda Multisport Complex. The month of September will include matchups of teams that were ranked in the NAIA Football Coaches Top 25 Poll for some or all of the 2015 campaign, including a rematch between William Penn and MidAmerica Nazarene that went to the Statesmen in overtime last season. All 12 teams will have the opportunity to show off their respective campuses as each will host one televised game. Once divisional play starts on October 8 with Benedictine visiting Culver-Stockton, each division will showcase three contests heading into the season finale on November 12 between Evangel and Baker at Liston Stadium in Baldwin City, Kan. Founded in 1971, the Heart of America Athletic Conference expanded to 12 member schools from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska last season, and will expand to 14 teams by the start of the academic year. The conference manages 20 intercollegiate varsity sports programs and all 12 schools are members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Bobcats will hit television twice this season the first being at home on October 22, 2016, against Grand View. The second chance to see the Bobats on ESPN3 is October 29, 2016 at Graceland.

In Peru State s loss to Missouri Valley on Saturday, Hoins punted six times for a total of 246 yards averaging 41 yards per punt. He had a long of 53 yards. Two of Hoins punts forced the Vikings to start within their 20-yard line. Hoins had three kick-offs for a total of 187 yards with a long of 65 yards. He had one touchback in the game. In kick scoring, Hoins made his lone field goal attempt of 20 yards and made both of his point after attempts. Hoins is listed in several NAIA Top 50 Individual Rankings. His top rankings include: seventh in total scoring kicking (26), eighth in total field goals (4), ninth in field goals per game (1.0), 13th in punt yards per attempt (40.7), and 16th in scoring/kicking per game (6.50).

Players of the Week Continued... Collin Weingaertner Collin Weingaertner - Heart Defensive Player of the Week Sophomore linebacker Collin Weingaertner, an Omaha North graduate, was named as the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Defensive Player of the Week. Conference officials announced all of its players of the week selections on Monday. Weingaertner, 5-10 and 200 pounds, had his best game ever in a Bobcat uniform as Peru State topped then 23rd-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Saturday. Against the Pioneers, he compiled 16 total tackles 11 of which were solo. In addition, Weingaertner added two tackles for losses of six yards. One of those tackles for losses came on a Pioneer fourth-down attempt late in the game when he tackled the MidAmerica Nazarene ball carrier for a loss of four yards. After his performance on Saturday, Weingaertner is now the Bobcats leading tackler averaging 6.0 tackles per contest. Nadja Janjevic Nadja Janjevic - Heart Attacker of the Week It is a little uncommon for a middle blocker to earn conference attacker of the week honors, but after hitting.526 during a three-win week, that is exactly what Nadja Janjevic did. The 6-0 sophomore from Podgorica, Montenegro, was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Attacker of the Week which was announced today by the conference officials. Janjevic takes fewer swings, but produces at a higher clip from her middle position. This week she averaged 2.27 kills per set while taking only 3.45 attempts during each set. In the upset win over #11 Grand View (Iowa), Janjevic had 11 kills in 21 attempts. Against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) and William Penn (Iowa), she had seven kills in each. Currently, Janjevic is fourth in the NAIA with 87 total blocks which is good enough for second in the Heart. She is fourth in the conference averaging 1.0 blocks per set.

CROSS COUNTRY Up-Coming Season (Peru, Neb.) Five returners and two newcomers will make up head coach Katy Billings fourth Peru State cross country team in The team will host the annual Nebraska s Toughest Mile race the morning of Homecoming at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. Seniors Hannah Wynn (Auburn) and Kiana Borengasser (Waianae, Hawaii) will help provide the leadership for the team, along with junior Samantha Carlson (Cozad). The Bobcat schedule is similar to previous years with one change from last year. Peru State will began their season competing in the Bearcat Invite in Maryville, Mo., on Sept. 2. Four sophomores join the three upperclassmen on the Below is (L) Jesse Keltch & (R) Celine Jolicoeur. team. Running for their second year are Samantha Daake (Beatrice) and Jesse Keltch (Scribner). The two newcomers on the team are Kaitlyn Tennant (Thornton, Colo.) and Danielle Wingert (Panama, Iowa). The team showed improvement last season while finishing 12th out of 14 teams in the expanded Heart of America Athletic Conference. Wynn will be the team s top returner. Her best time in 2015 for a 5K was 23:50.4. Borengasser ran a best of 26:05. Carlson struggled to overcome injuries and ran a 29:02 after having a better freshman campaign. Daake had a best of 26:29 while Keltch s best was 29:01. Billings commented, We did lose a couple of individuals who we were counting on for this year. However, that comes with coaching and I know the seven women who are running are dedicated and will work hard throughout the season.

Ashland & Booster Golf Tourneys PSC Football Booster Club Golf Tournament A three-year win streak was broken at the Peru State Football Booster Club Golf Tournament as Team Cat Scratch Fever took down the reigning champs on August 5, Cat Scratch Fever was captained by Bill Campbell of Tecumseh. Campbell is the head men s golf coach at Southeast Community College in Beatrice. Joining Campbell were Paul Fell (Lincoln), Cory Scamman (Rock Port, Mo.) a former Bobcat men s basketball player, and Jay Hunter (Rock Port, Mo.). Campbell s team shot a 59 and won a score card playoff over the returning champs. Friends Golf Tournament Excessive heat did not keep friends of the Peru State athletic department from participating in its Bobcat Summer Golf Tour held at the Ashland Golf Club on Thursday. Thirty-one golfers hit the course at high noon and played 18 holes followed by a dinner. The Troy Paben family from Columbus won the tournament. Joining Troy were sons Jordan, Logan, and Ethan. Taking second was team of Peruvians which include Dan Cotton, Harold Hitch, Mark Moody, and Kip Reeves. Finishing third was a team from Omaha headed up by former Bobcat men s volleyball player John Svehla. Also on the team were Dennis Meisenbach, Alex Meisenbach, and Boyce Voorhees. The tournament was directed for the fifth year by Peru State Booster Club member Mike Gerdes. Gerdes was pleased with the outcome of the day, especially to have a similar number of teams and golfers as in He noted, While we were one team short of being full, I believe we had a successful tournament. Continuing, Gerdes stated, I had plenty of help on pulling off this event and am very appreciative of all who played, donated, and helped in some manner. I hope we have this same type of support and attendance in future years. I would like to thank all who contributed and/or participated as we generated some excellent funds for the Bobcat football program, noted Gerdes. Thanks, too, to Rae Ann and Gary Goering, as well as, the Auburn Country Club, for hosting the event, concluded Gerdes. Paul Fell of Lincoln won a door prize for a tailgating spot for one of the upcoming Bobcat football games while Gordon Ohnoutka of Valparaiso took the single game parking pass. Peru State athletic director Steve Schneider coordinated the event and thanked all in attendance for their participation. Schneider also encouraged the group to continue to support Bobcat athletics and to attend some events this upcoming year.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES MERLE BAUER Merle Bauer is inducted to the Peru State Hall of Fame not just based on his athletic abilities displayed while at Peru State, but also for his contributions to athletics after his graduation from the College. Bauer was a four-year letterman in basketball and received all-conference honors three years. While in a Bobcat uniform, Bauer and his teammates made three consecutive trips to the NAIA DI National Tournament 1948, 1949, and After graduation from Peru State, Bauer taught and coached in Bertrand, Tecumseh, Holdrege, and North Platte. He was the athletic director at North Platte for nearly two decades with the football field eventually being named after him. He is considered to be the key figure in expanding girls athletics in North Platte. Bauer passed away in 1988 and was posthumously inducted in the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame as an athlete, basketball coach, and athletic director. After finishing her storied career in 1995, Parker was named a Second Team All-American. She was a member of the 1993 and 1995 Bobcat teams who played in the NAIA National Tournament. In 1993, Parker was named to the NAIA National Tournament All-Tournament Second Team. In addition, Parker was named as the 1994 Co-MVP in the NAIA All-Midwest South Independent Region. Also, Parker was a member of successful Bobcat women s basketball teams for two years. MONTE SCOTT One of few Bobcat baseball players to receive national recognition multiple times, Monte Scott, received NAIA Baseball All-American Honorable Mention three years. Scott was a three-time Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) First Team, three-time All-Region Selection, and was the MCAC Player of the Year in Perhaps the biggest aspect of Scott s storied career JILL PARKER SCANLON in a Bobcat uniform are the records which still stand After 21 years, Jill Parker today. In addition, she is still third all-time in career blocks with 622 and also holds the third-best single-season kills mark at 571.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES CONTINUED... GARLAND SHAFER Garland Shafer was a member of the Bobcat football team and was a captain for two years. Shafer earned NAIA District 11 All- Conference and Omaha World-Herald All-State recognition two times. In 1981, he was named as an NAIA Second Team All-American. Shafer is still in the record books as he shares the record for the longest kickoff return of 100 yards against Yankton in At one time, he had the longest pass reception of 79 yards in the record books. He drew the attention of pro scouts as a defensive back with his blend of size and speed. Being a leading tackler, the opponents feared him. The end result caused competition to run and throw away from him enabling the defense to be one of the leaders in all categories in the NAIA. Shafer was a member of the team which was inducted into the Hall of Fame in VOLLEYBALL TEAM The 1996 Peru State volleyball team was the third team in four years to earn a trip to the NAIA Women s Volleyball National Championship. The Bobcats, with only one senior on the squad, earned an at-large berth to the tourney having finished the regular season with a mark. In the Midwest Regional Tournament, Peru State won a key match-up over Rockhurst (Mo.) which helped propel them into the national tournament. At the national tournament held at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, the Bobcats pulled off the upset of the tourney in pool play. Peru State defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii. After losing the first two sets 7-15, 5-15, the Bobcats came back to win 15-8, 15-9, The team finished pool play 2-2, but did not advance to the championship bracket. Ironically, BYU- Hawaii went on to win their third consecutive title. Peru State, who was coached by first-year head coach, Todd Jensen, finished the year with a record, one of the highest win total in Bobcat volleyball history. At the time of induction, five of the Bobcat players are still listed in Peru State volleyball single-season or career top ten records. Following the season, Kendra Cory Koehler earned All- American Honorable Mention recognition. While the team had much success on the court, they were successful in the classroom as well. The Bobcats finished with a team grade point average of 3.4 and were one of just eight NAIA teams to be recognized by the AVCA with a team academic award.

Going the Distance for the Oak Bowl Field House For more than 100 years, the Oak Bowl Complex has been a signature feature on the Peru State College Campus. In 2014, the Oak Bowl hosted its first game after an extensive renovation of the stadium, concourse, and competition field. The Oak Bowl renovation represented a $9,000,000 investment by the State of Nebraska, Peru State College and more than 300 alumni and Friends of Peru State who have contributed over $1,100,000. The impact of the renovation has been felt on new student recruitment, athletics recruitment, the game experience for athletes and fans alike, and a new spirit of excitement and enthusiasm surrounding Peru State. One key element of the Oak Bowl remains largely untouched by the recent renovations: the home locker room. It is time to Go the Distance for the Oak Bowl by providing a home locker room and coaching facility that meets a collegiate standard. The current home locker room, a 4,600 square-foot building on the northwest corner of the field, is wholly inadequate to serve student athletes and the football team. It lacks some of the most basic necessities of a locker room, such as: Group meeting space adequate for the size of the football team Lockers of a size and quality to support college athletes Adequate restroom and shower facilities Secure storage for team and personal property A welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that supports team camaraderie Audio-visual systems and technology In addition, Peru State has limited ability to provide locker facilities to visiting teams. Visiting teams can leave the stadium to use the locker facility in the Al Wheeler Activity Center. However, most often visiting teams use a tent set up on the practice field as a team gathering area, and use the public restroom facilities located in the north end zone. Equipping the Oak Bowl to support a vibrant campus life and community engagemet requires improved facilities for our student-athletes off the field. A New Bobcat Field House Peru State College Foundation has purchased the former Peru Grade School, located to the north of the stadium, to serve as the new home locker room facility and coaching center. This 9,840 square-foot building will more than double the space currently available to support the Bobcat football team. Purchasing and renovating this facility is more cost efficient than building a new field house of comparable size. Once renovated, the new field house will include: the home team locker room a coaches locker room large team meeting area two conference and film rooms offices for eight coaches athletic training treatment room athletic trainers office and storage area team equipment and storage Three Phase Renovation Plan The field house will complete and fulfill the vision for the Oak Bowl, which extends beyond football. Minor renovations to the current locker room will prepare it to host visiting teams. With two locker facilities, the Oak Bowl will be able to host other events such as soccer games, high school football games, and marching band competitions. The renovated Oak Bowl is probably the best stadium facility in our conference. But the locker room - the home for our student athletes - ranks near the bottom in terms of quality. Steve Schneider, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach

Funds Available Campus Capital Improvement Funds $100,000 NSCS Sports Facilities Cash Fund $300,000 Gifts and Pledges (raised to date) $375,032 Remaining from Oak Bowl Renovation $119,291 Total Funds Available $894,323 Renovation will be conducted in three phases as funds are raised for the new field house. The Oak Bowl will also be able to more readily support Peru State s active intramural sports leagues which often play on the Oak Bowl field. Providing coaches offices in the field house will free up space in the Al Wheeler Activities Center to provide expanded office and storage space for all of Peru State athletics. Across campus, space is at a premium. In the off-season, the new field house can be used for classes and extra-curricular activities far beyond football. Investing in Athletics Educational Experience: Athletics is a powerful educational and co-curricular opportunity for students, teaching games, strategies and skills that last a lifetime, like discipline, team work, commitment, and common goals. Preliminary Cost Estimates Purchase Price $60,000 Phase I: Home Locker Room $970,000 Subtotal Phase I $1,030,000 Phase II: Coaching & Training Facilities $504,000 Phase III: Team Meeting Rooms $746,000 Loan Repayment $200,000 Total Cost $2,480,000 Phase one will create the new home locker room and complete exterior renovations. Work will begin as soon as the funding needed for phase one has been secured. Only an additional $135,677 is needed! Competitive Advantage: An improved field house, combined with the rest of the Oak Bowl renovations, will give Peru State an additional competitive advantage when it comes to recruiting players and coaches. Increased Prominence: Going the distance for the Oak Bowl will contribute to increased prominence for Peru State, one of the College s strategic priorities to advance its role in education. Building Community: Athletics brings people together: the campus, surrounding communities, alumni, parents and families. It builds relationships that last long after the game ends. Funds Available Financial commitments have paved the way for the new field house. Donors who contribute $2,500 or more will be recognized on the donor display on the Oak Bowl Con course. Additional special recognitions is available for gifts of $25,000 and more. The flexibility to use this field house for classes and other campus activities means that it will impact a significant number of students across campus. President Dan Hanson Donations may be sent to Peru State Athletics, P.O. Box 10, Peru, NE
