And all this drama begins occurring at age forty! Really? Ha Ha Ha! Did you get a whiff of MY decaying body as I stood there trying to conduct a meeting last month? I hope not! This month, that won t be a problem! Our program, following our 10:00 a.m. business meeting, on Saturday, October 15 th at the Lincoln Heights will feature Personal Trainer, Jeff Perez. He will be showing us easy movements that will delay and even stop decay in its tracks. Plus, more importantly, he ll talk about moves that will keep us functioning as we age and show us how to prevent falls and keep our bones and knees strong for years to come. What a treat! And it s all FREE! We had a great time together last month and looks like this month s meeting will be full of laughs too! So throw on some comfy, stretchy clothing and come join the fun with the Sisterhood! See you soon! 4 Page 4 Please Pay Your Beta Tau Dues!! by Scotta Williams, Beta Tau Treasurer This year the dues payment will remain at $75 for active members and $35 for reserve members (as listed in the yearbook), and payment is due NOW. Checks can be made payable to Beta Tau and mailed to: Scotta Williams 3027 Split Rock Circle Bulverde, TX OR you can pay them no later than the October 15 meeting. If you need to set up payment on a payment plan, let Scotta know right away so she keeps you on the membership lists. FYI only $14 of the $75 each active member pays stays in the Beta Tau chapter account to take care of the committee business, the cost of meeting locations and expenses, and other needs to keep the chapter operational. 5 Page 5 September Minutes Respectfully Submitted, by Kathy Jeffcoat, Beta Tau Recording Secretary On Saturday, September 10, 2016, the business meeting of the Beta Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma was called to order at 10:33 a.m. by chapter president, Ann Morales. Scotta Williams gave the treasurer s report. Reserve membership was discussed. The possibility of asking each member for $1 to cover reserve members who can t pay was tendered. Cindy Kosub volunteered to cover the expenses of one of our reserve members. Scotta explained how the scholarship fund works. Last year it paid $500 for a kindergarten school field trip and Ms. Zapata s $500 scholarship at Texas Lutheran University. Jeanette Pierce moved that scholarship money be used to pay for attendees state convention registration. Rose Bradley seconded it, and the motion carried. The officers handout was distributed. New business discussed included Rose asking how we can use the brass and silver pieces belonging to the chapter. Scotta Williams, Jeanette Pierce and Carolyn Dahlgren went to the DKG International Conference in Nashville, Tennesse and shared some of their memorable experiences. Cindy Kosub reminded us to give $5 for parking to Jeanette Pierce. The October meeting will include a brief workout so wear comfortable stretchable clothing & sturdy shoes. Jeannette Ferguson presented the refreshments signup sheet for the year. The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m. Those Who Volunteer Beta Tau would like to recognize their members who volunteer in our community. Each month the goal is to highlight a member who volunteers. This month the ue is pleased to recognize Suzette Price. She volunteers for NESA---Northeast Senior Assistance---by driving elderly (60 and over) to doctor and dentist appointments. Volunteers pick up the clients, stay with them and then take them home. Therefore, there is not the waiting time as with other services. Other volunteers for NESA do grocery shopping, reassurance calls and simple handy man chores. The goal of NESA is to allow elderly to stay in their homes as long as possible. There is no charge for these services, but there is mileage reimbursement for volunteers. Most clients are over 80 and very grateful for the NESA services. She has been a volunteer driver and board member for NESA for almost ten years. MacArthur Park Lutheran Church provides the office space for NESA on the MacArthur Park Lutheran Church campus. There are other churches and organizations, including the United Way, that support NESA financially. More volunteers are always needed. 6 Page 6 A Recipe for a Healthy Lifestyle Grilled Steak Salad with Walnut Dressing Ingredients: 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 2 oz. coarsely chopped walnuts ½ C. olive oil ½ tsp. kosher salt 1 garlic clove, thinly sliced ¼ tsp. pepper 1/3 C. white wine vinegar 1 T. Dijon mustard 1T. brown sugar 1 sirloin steak, marinated & grilled 1 romaine lettuce, torn 2 oz. crumbled blue cheese 1 ripe avocado, sliced Cherry tomatoes to taste Dressing: Sauté onion in ¼ C. hot olive oil in large skillet over medium high heat 3-4 minutes or until golden and tender. Add walnuts and garlic; cook stirring occasionally 3-4 minutes or until walnuts just begin to turn golden grown. Remove from heat. Cool 5 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together vinegar, brown sugar, and Dijon mustard in a medium bowl. Gradually whisk in cooled walnut mixture and an additional ¼ C olive oil. Add salt and pepper. Arrange torn romaine lettuce in a bowl or on large dinner plates. Add avocado, cherry tomatoes, and crumbled bleu cheese. Top with grilled steak and vinaigrette dressing. Enjoy! 7 Page 7 A Letter To The Editor I m sharing a summer photo for Beta Tau s October newsletter of Dorothy Warras enjoying a picnic at her neighborhood park, just before she and her granddaughter Claire fed the ducks which became a highlight of this summer s visit. Dorothy's granddaughter flew to San Antonio (with her mom, who is in the middle) to spend the last part of the summer with her Oma and Opa. The hot temperatures of August quickly disappeared with the appreciative chorus of quacks to the generous disbursement of crumbs. Claire asked her Oma, When can we come again? Oma obliged by setting aside more bread and Claire s Opa even donated his favorite cereal, Cheerios. Each subsequent visit the ducks rushed over in a raucous welcome as soon as Dorothy and her granddaughter got out of the car. When they saw the tablecloth being spread across the picnic table, the ducks patiently waited nearby while the people enjoyed their food. The grandparents with their granddaughter only fed the ducks from the pond s pier, after having packed up their picnic. Then it was time for the ducks to enjoy theirs. Not having to rely on the pier s boardwalk, the ducks took the shortcut through the water to be the first to receive the crumbs. During this summer visit Dorothy and her granddaughter got to feed the ducks at least three times. Thanks for inviting the Beta Tau sisters to share fun moments of themselves, in addition to professional accomplishments. Cara Lambert (Dorothy s daughter) Adopt A Child 2016 Once again, Beta Tau participated in the Christian Assistance Ministries (CAM) back to school adopt a child program. Backpacks full of school supplies were collected for distribution to various K-12 students throughout San Antonio via CAM.
