1 Delta Kappa Gamma Society International South Dakota Newsletter Alpha Pi-State Volume 5, Issue 2 February, 2014 President s Message... As I sit here looking outside and listening to the weather report of -65 o wind chill here in Mobridge, I think back to our 2013 DKG State Convention in Aberdeen and long for those hot temperatures. This, in turn, brought my thoughts to our 2014 DKG State Convention to be held in Vermillion June 6 th and 7 th. I vow NOT to complain about the temperature being too hot! We have our International Society Representative lined up for those days. It ll be Mary Lee Makinen, NE Regional Director from Snowhill, MD. I hope many of you will be able to attend the convention and hear her presentation. This is also a good time to remind everyone to get their reports in to the proper people. Copies of the report forms can be found on the DKG website. Several visits to SD chapters have been set up, but I need to hear from more chapters to get even more visits set up. Please contact me so I can meet and visit with all our DKG sisters My phone numbers are: (Home) ; (School) ; (Cell) ) Ladies, at your chapter meetings, start talking about our state convention in Vermillion on June 6 th and 7 th. Encourage those who have never gone to a state convention to come and see how informative, enlightening, entertaining, and just plain fun the conventions are. Remember, South Dakota will be hosting the Regional Convention in a few years so we need lots of sisters at our State Convention to start brain storming for the Regional Convention. A joyous and happy New Year to everyone. STAY WARM!! Barbara Naumann SD DKG State Organization President

4 Congratulations, Elizabeth! The Golden Gift Fund Committee proudly announces that Elizabeth Wood of South Dakota State Organization has been selected as one of thirty (30) Delta Kappa Gamma members to participate in the 2014 Golden Gift Leadership Management Seminar. This two-week program will be held at the McCombs School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin, June 28-July 11, WEIGHT WATCHERS ZERO POINTS GARDEN VEGETABLE SOUP RECIPE 6 cups broth Cooking spray 2 carrots, peeled and diced 1 large onion, diced 4 teaspoons garlic, minced 1/2 cabbage, chopped 1/2 pound frozen green beans 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 large zucchini, diced Bring the broth to a boil in the microwave. (This is a time-saving tip that can be skipped if there's no hurry.) Spray a Dutch oven with cooking spray and heat on MEDIUM HIGH. Add the carrots, onion and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes. Add all the remaining ingredients EXCEPT the zucchini and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce the heat to MEDIUM and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the beans are tender. Add the zucchini and cook until the zucchini are tender. Serve and enjoy! ALANNA'S TIPS & KITCHEN NOTES BROTH Canned broth or bouillon granules work fine but for more freshness, consider using Homemade Vegetable Bouillon or Light Vegetable Stock. GARLIC Use garlic from a jar or substitute about four cloves minced garlic. CABBAGE Fresh cabbage is best but you can use a bag of pre-cut slaw, just look for the biggest chunks you can find versus the fine angel-hair slaw. Don't skip the cabbage, somehow it makes the soup.
