3 School Hours Will Change The School Hours will change for all BISD schools. Starting August 22, 2016, all BISD elementary, middle and Clute Intermediate schools will attend classes from 8:05 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. All high schools, the Lighthouse Learning Center, Freeport Intermediate and Lake Jackson Intermediate schools will attend classes from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is necessary to stagger start times for our schools to be able to provide bus transportation for many of our students. In 2015, the State Legislature passed House Bill 2610 requiring students to receive at least 75, 600 minutes of instruction, including intermissions and recess, each year. The minutes must be calculated from the tardy bell in the morning to the dismissal bell in the afternoon. Teachers are required to be employed under a 10-month contract, providing a minimum of 187 days of service to their district. The bill also stipulated that districts include the equivalent of two bad weather makeup days in their calendar and not end the school year before May 15. There are many benefits to changing student attendance to minutes instead of days: Personalizes students schedules based on their needs High school can offer up to 8 class periods More time in the day to offer more electives More flexibility for students who are taking dual credit, AP and Pre-AP courses Allows students taking dual credit classes at BC the opportunity to take six classes at the high school instead of five Offers students the ability to follow their pathway/endorsements while participating in athletics and/or fine arts courses Offers more availability for extracurricular choices Offers opportunities to include UIL academic prep classes, as well as college prep classes such as ACT and SAT prep Offers credit recovery (NTC) and/or trailer courses for students needing more time to learn Offers Accelerated Instruction (state mandate) Allows us to end the school year in May! No longer an overlap with college summer school semesters There are also benefits for our educators. The new legislation allows student attendance days to be shortened by nine, while increasing their daily academic minutes. These nine required contract days for our teachers will allow us to provide opportunities for additional professional development. Campuses will have more time to focus on specific areas of growth with the flexibility to train their staff accordingly. 4 Brazosport Business Professionals of America at National Convention! Students and advisors of Brazosport High School participated in the National Leadership Conference of Business Professionals of America in Boston, MA. A total of 4 members from this chapter were among the approximate 6,000 students, advisors and guests from across the United States participating in the 50th National Leadership Conference. Three students received the Ambassador Torch Award, one participated in competitive events, and all took Microsoft Office Certification Exam offered throughout the week. An Ambassador is defined as "a diplomatic official of the highest rank appointed and accredited as representative of the organization." The following students represented the Brazosport High School chapter: Ta Keiyah Backman (Ambassador Torch, MOS PowerPoint), Michael Green (Ambassador Torch, MOS PowerPoint), Tatyana Green (Ambassador Torch, MOS PowerPoint), and Rosa Meza (17th Fundamental Word Processing Skills). The National Leadership Conference is a culmination of the hard work and effort put in by members throughout the year. It brings students from across the country together to participate, network and compete. Activities included general sessions with keynote speakers, business meetings, leadership workshops, contests, election of national officers, and tours of Boston sights and attractions! The highlights of the conference included the revival of legacy competitions such as typing and shorthand, a Golden Celebration at Fenway Park, setting a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title, and the presentation of the awards to the winners of the national contests.

6 Massey Affirms Restrooms Not an Issue in BISD We are certainly disappointed with President Obama's announcement regarding school restrooms. We strongly disagree and prefer local control of our own issues. We have seven Board of Trustees elected by the people, who very effectively govern our school district. Student restroom use is not an issue in Brazosport ISD, nor do we foresee it to be. Brazosport ISD does not have a specific policy addressing bathroom use by transgender students. We have nondiscrimination policies in place for all students, and, as with all requests for modification or accommodation, we make case-by-case decisions for each student based upon the situation. It is always our intent to treat each of our students with dignity and respect. Our focus will continue to be providing a quality education and outstanding learning experiences for our students with dedicated and committed teachers. We know the confidence and trust parents place in our hands each day with their children. It is a responsibility we take very seriously, and will never allow Washington D.C. to betray that trust.
