You may also visit the county's one-stop webpage at for information about services, recreation and community engagement opportunities. Eligibility Requirements for Senior Center Membership Neighborhood and Community Services is happy to welcome prospective members, 50 years of age or older, to all Fairfax County Senior Centers. To qualify for membership a person must, with or without a reasonable modification, be: Able to orient correctly to person, place and time; Able to independently navigate to programs and through center facilities safely; Able to get on and off a county vehicle safely; Able to remain seated in a county vehicle with the seat belt fastened until the vehicle comes to a complete stop; Able to receive and follow instructions independently; Able to recognize and respond appropriately to emergency warnings; Able to adhere to the Senior Center s Terms of Membership/Code of Conduct when participating in programs, taking advantage of services or otherwise using the facilities; Able to maintain personal care (eating, restroom usage, personal hygiene, medication management) independently.

Reservations are requested. The notebook is on the First Floor in the Orange Binder in Foyer as you enter the building. Feedback has been positive on the placement of the Orange Binder. Thank you for embracing change! DROP- IN = Members do not need to sign up to attend a program or activity. If you continue with the group, make sure that you are added to the Club Roster in the Main Office. Open to the Public: Anything that has been advertised as such: in-house or as a local news release. Sign Up in Main Office: Charter Trips, Pot Lucks or any event requiring payment. Wednesday Trip of Necessity: NOTE: Now in Purple Binder on Lobby Sideboard. Please Note: We support and appreciate all of our community guest speakers sharing their knowledge and expertise with our membership. Hollin Hall Senior Center is a Fairfax County Center with the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services. Our guest speakers are informed in advance that they may not take names, phone numbers, and addresses, suggest that students take a paid class with them outside the center or hold a drawing while here at the center. They MAY distribute business cards and handouts upon request. Initial class will determine participants needs, where the instructor needs to focus, adaptive devices or help where needed, supply lists and more! CLASS WILL BE LIMITED TO 10 Members Figure Drawing - Coming in January, join us for a new way to exercise your brain. According to a study conducted by Newcastle University in England*, figure drawing for three hours a week over a two month period improved performance on a battery of mental abilities tests including memory, far better than vigorous walking or doing word puzzles for the same amount of time. No experience in art classes? No matter! The focus of the class will be brain exercise, not improved drawing ability. But don't be surprised if that happens, too! * Sign Up in Orange Binder. Joan Hart will take you through this creative process, based on her book Through an Artist s Eyes: Learning to Live Creatively. Healthy Eating Club with Becky, Assistant Director. 10 January/February 2016 Members of the National Institute of Senior Centers Page 10 Winter Interlude Part I Beyond the Next Horizon: Take a journey through the landscapes of Monet and the Impressionists, Van Gogh, and American Hudson River School painters, and utilize their scenic visions to enhance your own walking and travel experiences. New! MVGS Lock-In: Mount Vernon Genealogical Society Lock-In covers nine topics over six hours and is designed for all levels of genealogist expertise. There will be displays from a variety of genealogical resources, lectures, tours of the research center, and small group discussions. Registration Closed. Color Me Calm with Lyn Vencus 8 sessions on Thursdays starting January 7 th Put down your electronics and give life to a favorite childhood pastime that is enjoying regained popularity - coloring for adults! Coloring is being encouraged because it offers complete absorption by engaging both our creative and tactical skills. Psychologists noted that colors themselves carry therapeutic qualities and actually affect our mood. All are invited! No experience. No pressure. No judgment. Colored pencils and detailed illustrations (paisleys, mandalas, nature designs, etc.) will be provided. Bazaar Crafters Workshop Come join the fun and friendship as we craft our way towards yet another bazaar. All are welcome. No experience required. Antiques Club Callie Stapp, Curator of Collections for Stabler- Leadbeater Apothecary Museum and Gadsby s Tavern Museum in Alexandria, will be talking about the interesting history of this unique museum. With an MA in Museum Studies from GW University, Callie has managed the processing of the Apothecary Museum s 20,000 object collection. You will learn how the apothecary store was used in the 1800 s until it closed in Free Public Invited Mt. Vernon Genealogical Society: School Day, School Daze School may not have been your favorite place, but uncovering what these records may hold could change your mind. This session will describe the types of school records you may find, what they may hold (each locale may have different information) and where to find them. Stedman See Veronica Cartier or Patty Barnes, co-lead, for Book Hollin Hall s 2 nd Annual Chili Cook-Off Time to show off your culinary skills with this ever versatile meal-in-itself dish that varies region to region and can incorporate an array of ingredients making each unique! January 7 February 4 Hollin Hall Advisory Council Managed Website by Steve Gallo: We are On Facebook too! Dance for Parkinson's is offered at the Hollin Hall Senior Center through Bowen McCauley Dance. BMD is the only dance company in the Metropolitan-DC area to provide Dance for PD-free weekly dance classes for people with Parkinson Disease and their care-partners. Lucy Bowen McCauley, BMD s Artistic Director and founder, is honored to bring dance to people with this disease. Besides the health benefits, dance takes the mind and spirit away from the thoughts of disease, disability and social isolation. Dance for PD originated with the Brooklyn (N.Y.) Parkinson Group and the Mark Morris Dance Group. At the invitation of MMDG and PFNCA, McCauley received training and certification in March 2008 to teach these fun and innovative classes. (For more information about the program, visit the official Dance for PD web site at When participating in the dance program, people with the disease report a decrease in physical symptoms and improved psychological and emotional benefits. One participant taking the class simply stated, I lose my symptoms when I m there. Parkinson s Disease Support Group meets at Hollin Hall every 1 st Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Room 112. Dance for PD meets the other Wednesdays throughout the month at 1 p.m. in Room 112.\
