2 NPHS NEWS KEITH FESSLER, PRINCIPAL NPHS Gets Wild It's Homecoming at NPHS! The theme for the week is "Get Wild" and dress up days have been just that. We've had Wild West Day, Rock and Roll Wild Day and, of course, Friday is the traditional Red and White Day. On Wednesday evening, classes participated in a volleyball tournament and a powderpuff football tournament for the girls. Friday's Homecoming Game against Greenfield Central begins at 7:30 and our traditional pork burgers will be available. The Homecoming Dance is Saturday evening. Come out and help us get wild as we beat the Cougars! 9/23 Homecoming Game Vs. 3 DCMS NEWS JIM VOELZ, PRINCIPAL Mr. Voelz goes to Washington D.C. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend 4 days in Washington D.C. at the Principals of the Year Institute. I, along with 49 other principals, was able to share ideas, present on best practices, and listen to incredible speakers. The third day of the institute involved meeting with our U.S. Senators and the U.S. Representative for our district. There were some great discussions on the state of education in Indiana and across the country. The best part of spending time on Capitol Hill was visiting with Senator Dan Coats and Deputy Press Secretary, Amy Timmerman. The former DCMS superstar is working in D.C. while getting her masters degree at George Washington University. She was telling her colleagues about Spirit Day and about her middle school principal changing the 8th grade prom to an end of the year celebration (she says she was mad at the time (14 years old), but now understands (24 years old). For the first time in the history of NPE, first grade students took their NWEA test on their ipads. A few teachers piloted administering the test on the student devices. When we discovered that it worked well, several more teachers took advantage of this. One teacher stated that it was uber easy and the students felt more at ease than going to the lab and using desktop computers. We love this! Our first grade students participated in our annual Pet Day this week. I completed my student teaching at Indianapolis Public Schools and started working at the same school where I student taught. I worked there for 8 years before changing to Greenfield-Central Schools in the last two years. While teaching at Greenfield, I was able to get involved in the Southern Hancock community by coaching swimming at Doe Creek. During my teaching career, I completed my Gifted and Talented License through Ball State University. My husband and I have two children who attend New Palestine Elementary. I am excited and eager to continue my teaching journey in the 3rd grade with the Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock County. W E E K L Y N E W S 4

The Student Council has organized a week of Spirit-Dress Up Days to support this great cause! Monday: Presidents Day: Readers are LeadersDress Up Like Your Favorite President Tuesday: Fairy Tale Day-Dress Up Like Your Favorite Fairy Tale Character Wednesday: Pajama & Slipper Day- Snuggle Up with a Good Book Thursday: Fiction Day-Dress Like Your Favorite Fictional Character Friday: Create a Shirt Decorated with Your Favorite Book Cover on It Recent Bulldog Events The Fall Book Fair was the feature at the PTO Fall Family Picnic and the annual Grandparent Breakfast. Great books joined with good food and fellowship to make Friday evening, September 9, and Monday morning, September 12, big days on the Bulldog calendar! Honoring Patriot Day On Friday, September 9, Brandywine students and staff started their day gathering around the flagpole to honor America s 9-11 Patriots. Student Council members shared what the day is all about, our flag helpers raised the flag to half mast. We then joined together to sing our national anthem, and ended the ceremony with a moment of silence. Brandywine Student Activities are Underway The Student Council recently wrapped up its election process with their first meeting and their first big event, the Imagination Library Express fundraiser! The Bulldog Spell Bowl team has kicked off their season with early morning practices for the November competition. The first BWE Robotics team had tryouts this week and will begin their practice very soon! Both Visions Art and Visions Music are underway, too! 6 SCE NEWS WRITTEN BY KARI SHELTON, PRINCIPAL SCE News Kindergarten Students Visit Distelrath Farm Sugar Creek kindergarten students took their learning curiosity off site last week and enjoyed a day at Distelrath Farm. It was their first field trip of the year. The students were able to feed some ducks, chickens and pigs, learn about gardening, taste vegetables, pick herbs, and enjoy a picnic lunch. The weather was wonderful and a fun day was enjoyed by all. SCE s Annual Grandparent s Breakfast Our annual grandparents breakfast was a huge success. On Friday, we opened our doors from 7:00-8:30 am to our students and their grandparents for muffins and juice. The kiddos took their grandparents on a school tour to visit their classroom and stopped to shop at our fall book fair. There were picture stations set up with a #grandselfie theme. It was a very special time for everyone and a long standing tradition at SCE.
