2 HISTORY/ BACKGROUND Bukit Beruang New Village was established in 1950 s. This village is 6km away from Melaka town and just 4km away from another new village which is Air Keroh. Bukit Beruang covers 19,322 hectares and 95% of the land is on 99 years lease. The land use within the village is 98% residential, 1% for commercial and the remainder 1% is for agriculture. The main modes of transportation for the villagers are cars and motorcycles. Buses and taxis are also available. The fare for public buses is RM 1.30 from Bukit Beruang to Malacca town centre. The taxi fare is RM4.00 per person from Bukit Beruang to Malacca town centre. Google Maps of Kampung Baru Bukit Beruang 1

3 INFRASTRUCTURE Bukit Beruang has tarred roads which are in good condition. The drains are made of concrete. The village receives 24 hours piped water from Syarikat Air Melaka and there is also 24 hours electricity supply from TNB. Furthermore, telecommunication facilities are available- public phones, mobile phone coverage, internet dial-up and so forth. In addition, medical services are available at private clinics. Security is handled by the local police station and a volunteer group. Garbage collection takes place 3 times a week. Lastly, the new village also has a public toilet in its Medan Selera. POPULATION & HOUSING At the earlier 1960s, the area currently occupied by Bukit Beruang New Village was partly occupied by Malay villagers and also partly jungle. Over time, more and more Chinese and Indians migrated to this new village. The ethnic composition of the population in 2000 is as follows: 75.5% Malays, 17.5% Chinese and 4.1% Indians. The total number of households for year 2000 is 371 and the average household size is 4.7. In the year 2000, there were 547 residents in the 0-14 age group and 1,131 people were in the age range between 15 and 64. In addition, there were 68 people above 65 years old. 5 ECONOMIC ACTIVITY Employment for the age group is in the following sectors: 10% in agriculture, 10% in manufacturing, 10% in construction, 10% in wholesale, retail, workshop business, 40% in services, and the remaining 20% are housewives, retirees or unemployed (Source: Census 2000, Department of Statistic). Many villagers work away from the new village, especially in Malacca town. There are a few outlets like kopitiam and wet markets. The banking services are available at a branch of Bank Simpanan Malaysia located in the new village and ATM services are available at the local Petronas station. 4

6 EDUCATION The new village of Kampung Bukit Beruang has a kindergarten, primary schools and a secondary school. The kindergarten is named Tadika Bukit Beruang. There are two primary schools: SK Bukit Beruang and SJK(C) Bukit Beruang. SK Bukit Beruang was established on 1907 with around 30 students and 3 teachers. The sports facilities provided include table tennis facilities and a store room for sports equipment. The SJK(C) Bukit Beruang was established on 1953 with around 82 students and 2 teachers. It has facilities for drawing and internet. The secondary school is named SMK Bukit Baru. It was established on 13 May The Multimedia University s Faculty of Business and Law is located nearby in Malacca. This campus has over 3,800 students enrolled in its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes which include the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Banking & Finance, International Business, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship, Bachelor of Business and Knowledge Management (Hons), Bachelor of Accounting (Hons), Bachelor of International Economics (Hons), Bachelor of Law (Hons) (LLB), Master of Philosophy (Management) and Doctor of Philosophy (Management). 8 SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY FACILITIES The facilities available at Bukit Beruang include a community hall which is known as Dewan Bukit Beruang. Although there is no library in Bukit Beruang, villagers can go to Rukun Tetangga Hall to study. As there is no post office at Bukit Beruang, the villagers go to Multimedia University (MMU) s post office to settle utilities bills. Furthermore, the village does not have a recreational park and families have to travel to Air Keroh recreational park to enjoy the facilities. Basketball enthusiasts may enjoy the sport at the local basketball court. CULTURE The places of worship in Bukit Beruang include a Mosque, Chinese temples, and a Hindu Kuil. The Mosque is known as Masjid Tun Syed Ahmad Al-Haj and is located in Jalan Istana Tuan Yang Terutama Negeri Melaka near Istana Melaka. It was built in The features of the mosque were based on mosques in the Middle East. The mosque is located close to S.K. Bukit Beruang, S.M. Bukit Baru and Pejabat Pendidikan Negeri Melaka. It is situated about 6KM from Malacca town. 7

10 Front view of Tokong Hiap Long Kong The Hindu Kuil is known as Persatuan Sri Muthumariamman temple situated in Melaka Tengah. It was established in 1992 and built on governmentowned land. 9

11 Persatuan Sri Muthumariamman temple The main language spoken by Chinese villagers is Mandarin. Majority of them also speak Hokkien dialect. The middle age and older villagers gather at the local gym, jog around the village or hang out at the MCA branch office. 10

12 TOURIST SPOT AND FOOD There is no tourist spot in Bukit Beruang. The food preferred by most villagers is Penang Char Kuey Teow which is available in Medan Selera of Bukit Beruang. Medan Selera ENTREPRUENUER OPPOTURINITIES Currently, there are only small business enterprises such as small retail outlets and coffee shops in Bukit Beruang. 11

13 PROBLEMS There have been burglaries and other crime in the village. As a result, the police have increased the frequency of patrolling the village. Traffic flow is generally smooth and traffic congestions are cleared within minutes. Some youngsters while away their time in the local internet café and get involved in online gaming. RECOMMENDATION In our opinion, the village needs a small library especially for the younger generation to widen their knowledge and to spend their leisure hours fruitfully. Besides, it is recommended to build a recreational park near the village so that families and friends can gather and spend time together. Perhaps the villagers could organize community service to educate the younger population. Since there is no fire station near the village, it would be wise to take precautions such as holding fire drills and taking fire safety measures. This will help villagers react if there is a fire in the village. As for the crime rate, there are many burglaries in the village.
