3 I. WELCOME TO FRESNO AND WOODWARD PARK Welcome to Fresno, Calif., home of the 2004 NCAA Cross Country West Regional at scenic Woodward Park. Located in north Fresno, Woodward Park has played host to 13 NCAA/Region 8 Cross Country Championships since the tournament s inaugural year of For the past three decades, the park has not only been utilized as the base for all of Fresno State s home meets, but has quickly become one of the most well-traveled cross country courses in the state. Since the 1970s, Woodward Park has hosted more major cross country competitions than any other site on the West Coast, including high school and junior college championships meets. At all levels, Woodward Park has become an important developmental cross country course. We hope that your time spent in the Central Valley will be a memorable one filled with success. A mandatory technical meeting for head coaches, or their representatives, of all competing teams and individuals will be conducted on Friday, November 12 at 7:15 p.m. at Smittcamp Alumni House. Important NCAA rules as well as pertinent information regarding the championship competition will be discussed. VI DIRECTIONS FROM AIRPORT AND HOTELS From the Airport to the Fresno State Campus: Turn right onto Clinton Way, which will turn into Clinton Ave, and head west for one mile. Turn right onto Chestnut Ave and head north for.5 mile. Turn left onto Shields Ave and head west for one mile. Turn right onto Cedar Ave and head north for 2.5 miles. Turn right onto Barstow Ave followed by a right onto Campus Drive. The North Gym, home of the Fresno State Athletics Department, will be on your right. From the Fresno State Campus to Woodward Park: Head north on Campus Drive. Turn left onto Barstow Ave followed by a right onto Cedar Ave. Turn left onto Bullard Ave and head west for about two miles. Turn right and merge onto Freeway 41 North. Take the Friant Rd exit and turn right. Turn left onto Audobon and head west for about half mile. Woodward Park will be on your right. Due to the number of hotels in the area, please use for a print out of directions. Following are the addresses you can input for your directions The Fresno Yosemite International Airport is located on 4995 E. Clinton Way, Fresno, CA The Fresno State Athletics Department is located on 5305 N. Campus Drive, Fresno, CA Woodward Park is located on 7775 Friant Road, Fresno, CA The phone numbers and addresses to the hotels in the area can be found on the Hotel/Restaurant Guide in Appendix A. 4

5 VII PARKING AT WOODWARD PARK At Woodward Park, parking is abundant. The first parking structure into the park is on the left side just as you pass the toll booth upon entering the park. The second and closest parking structure to the start of the race is the second lot on the left side of the road. VIII COURSE DESCRIPTION The course at Woodward Park consists of rolling hills with one steep climb and is approximately 60% dirt, 20% grass, and 20% road. Spikes are not recommended. Over the past decade, Fresno s Woodward Park has been the host of many major West Coast championships as well as the site of the California State High School XC Meet. The park runs several courses of different lengths, which include four-mile, five-mile, eight-mile and 10-mile courses. All of the courses cover the same area and repeat many of the same miles, with the first mile identical for all courses. The courses have remained the same through the years, allowing for consistent times and records IX ENTRY PROCEEDURES AND DECLARATIONS Each coach is responsible for submitting the 2004 NCAA Men s & Women s Cross Country Entry Form to Shannon Lieder (fax ) no later than Wednesday, November 3, The form is available only on the NCAA website at the following address: In addition, each institution should keep one copy to hand carry to the Regional meet. Institutions that submit late entry forms may still have their teams participate in the regional meet after a fine is paid at the regional site. Only those student-athletes listed on the entry form may compete in the meet. Additional information can be found in the 2004 NCAA Division I Men s & Women s Cross Country Championships Handbook. Final declarations will take place at the coaches meeting on Friday, November 12 at 6:30 p.m. X SCORING NCAA rules for scoring will be followed. No more than seven (7) runners from each institution may participate. All rules and regulations are included in the 2004 NCAA Division I Men s & Women s Cross Country Championship Handbook will be followed. The top two (2) teams will automatically qualify for the championship meet on November 21. XI UNIFORMS Competitors must wear the proper uniform (warm-ups included) of the institution they represent in the championships. Uniforms for all cross country teams must meet the following criteria: school issued; pants may be of any length, but must have identical 5

6 color; and visible undergarments must be of an identical solid color. Uniforms must be clean and of a material and design so as not to be objectionable. Bare midriff tops are not acceptable. (Note: The uniform top must meet or hang below the waist band when the competitor is standing.) Uniforms must allow for competitors numbers to be placed above the waist (front and back). XII LOCKER ROOMS Locker rooms and changing rooms are not available at the course. Teams should make arrangements with their hotels. XIII ATHLETIC TRAINING SERVICES AND FACILITIES A certified athletic trainer will provide an auxiliary facility set-up on-site near the starting line at the south end of the Mountain View picnic shelter. A trainer will be available on site during practice hours on Friday November 12 between 2:00-5:00 p.m. A trainer will be on site 2 hours prior to the start of competition on Saturday, November 13. Each participating school should provide it s own taping supplies. If an athletic trainer is not accompanying a team, therapeutic modalities will be administered to participating athletes only with a written note from their team trainer or team physician. Please inform Kelli Eberlein, Host Athletic Trainer, if you will not be traveling with an athletic trainer. XIV.
