(If you do not check in before moving in, you will be subject to an improper check-in fee that is $50.) At check-in, you will receive your room keys and mailbox keys. You have the opportunity to inspect your residence before moving in. The residence life staff is eager to assist you. If you need additional assistance finding the check-in locations, ask those wearing the Ask Me T-shirts or call (701) (or get assistance at the Student Development Office in the Benedictine Center, Room 1209). Once moved in, head over to the New Student Check-in at the Clairmont Center. 10 am 4 pm New Student Check-in Clairmont Center Each new student must check-in at the Clairmont Center to receive his/her class schedule, Mcard, parking permit, and Welcome Packet. The Welcome Packet includes a lanyard with a flash drive, a plastic badge with your name and schedule, a Class of 2015 T-shirt, a planner, the orientation schedule, a map of the campus, and other goodies. If you wish, you can then proceed to pick up books and school supplies at the University Bookstore, which will be open until 4 p.m. Be sure to check out the Marauder Cove next door for a coffee or specialty drink. Food will be available for purchase at Chick s Place in University Hall. 11 am 2 pm Financial Assistance and Student Accounts Offices Open Benedictine Center for Servant Leadership The Office of Financial Assistance and Office of Student Accounts welcome anyone needing assistance. If you have any last-minute transactions or new information, the staff will be happy to assist you.

3 2 pm 4 pm Room Blessings Individual Residence Hall Rooms Through Campus Ministry, the University of Mary offers room blessings for individual rooms in the residence halls. This service is open to anyone, no matter one s religious denomination or affiliation. If interested, let the Residence Life staff know at check-in and the very brief ceremony will be arranged. Nothing like preparing your space for a year of serious and intentional learning and growth! 4:30 pm 5:30 pm Convocation of Welcome for the Class of 2015 McDowell Activity Center You become part of the University of Mary s tradition in a reception ceremony. University President Father James P. Shea and faculty welcome new students and their families with a long-standing ritual known as the Wheat Ceremony. 5:30 pm 7 pm Family and Friends Dinner Leach Field House The University of Mary tradition continues in meal sharing. At table together, food, friendship, and fun set the stage for a learning community. Families of new students are welcomed as part of the larger University of Mary community. 7 pm 8 pm Student Life Meeting Arno Gustin Hall Lynn Geary, director of student life, and Katie Cashman, associate director of student life, will address the first-year students. In this interactive session they present new students with the basic information they need in order to be successful at the University of Mary. 7 pm 8 pm Residence Hall Parent Meeting Lobby of Each Student s Residence Hall Whether it s your first time moving a student to college or the tenth, you will benefit from meeting the residence director. The director, a full-time, live-in professional, helps ensure your son s or daughter s success outside of the classroom. This informal session allows for questions and has proven to be a valuable resource for parents for the year to come. 7 pm 8 pm Parents of Commuter Students Social Marauder Cove Parents of commuter students can meet and visit since they don t get the opportunity to mingle during move-in. This is a great opportunity to network with other parents and share strategies about having a college student at U-Mary.

4 8 pm 9 pm Students & Parents Social Lobby of Student s Residence Hall After a long and frantic day of moving and settling in and learning the ropes, relax with other families in the residence hall over some ice cream. Ice cream, well earned! 8 pm 9 pm Commuter Students and Parents Social Marauder Cove Parents and students can mingle as the Saturday events come to a close. 9 pm Residence Hall Activities Residence Hall (as assigned in each one s packet) Get to know neighbors in the residence hall! Lay the foundation for making friends in college and get the ball rolling for what can be some exciting days ahead! Sunday, August 21 9:30 am 10:30 am Eucharistic Liturgy for New Students and their Families Our Lady of Annunciation Chapel, Benedictine Center 10 am 11:30 am Family Brunch University Hall The University of Mary is Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine. As part of our welcome tradition, new students and families of all faiths are invited to gather for a special Eucharistic Liturgy. University of Mary President Father James Shea will give the homily. Family members join the new crop of scholars for another occasion of table sharing. An ample brunch is served in the University Dining Hall. Families can relax and enjoy time together one last time before their son or daughter embarks on college studies. 11:30 am 12:30 pm Families Depart Goodbyes to families: sad on the one hand and joyful on the other. One chapter of life is ending, but another is beginning. 12 noon 4 pm University Bookstore Open University Hall

5 1 pm 5 pm Raging Rivers Water Park Raging Rivers Water Park, Mandan, ND Buses will begin loading at 12:45 pm outside of the McDowell Activity Center. Meet new friends, enjoy the sun and kick back for your first afternoon as a college student! You don t need a bathing suit to have fun. There will be a designated area just for U-Mary students to relax and get to know each other. So bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and flip-flops and get ready to have some fun! Admission is free, with concessions and mini-golf are available at your own expense. No outside food or beverages are allowed. In case of inclement weather or flooding issues, activities will be held in the Leach Field House. 5:30 pm 7 pm Sunday Evening Dinner University Dining Hall After a day of fun in the sun, fuel up for the night with dinner for just for the class of pm 12 midnight New Student Black Light Dance Chick s Place Join your new friends for the new student dance in Chick s Place. There will be black lights and glow-in-the-dark items to wear, so come prepared to have a rockin good time. Don t dance? Come anyway! We ll have tables for you to hang out, listen to the music, and meet other new students. Monday, August 22 6:45 am 10:30 am Breakfast University Hall or Benedictine Center Dining Hall Get off to a good start. It s the day before classes but your first day with your ALU classmates. Take some time to fuel up. 9 am 1 pm ALU (Freshman Leadership Seminar) Classes Meet Various places check your schedule What s ALU? It s short for America s Leadership University. Your ALU class is a freshman leadership seminar. This first-year experience class covers the basics of how things work on campus and in college. You will learn important study skills, meet with your advisor, meet people who will become close friends (many last beyond the college experience), and gain important skills that will help you achieve your degree. Schedule changes can be made at this time. Also, President Father James Shea will speak with all the freshman ALU classes during this time.

6 12 noon 1 pm Lunch with your ALU Classmates Leach Field House Sit down, relax and have lunch with your ALU classmates. 1 pm 1:30 pm My.umary.edu Information Session Arno Gustin Hall Each U-Mary student gets a unique username and password to access the university system and a university address. Make a point to sit in on this session to learn about your account and how to use the student portal to access your online classes, check your grades, see what s on the lunch menu, and keep on top of important announcements. Don t miss this important session! 1:30 pm Classroom Tours Various locations Check your official school schedule This is a chance to get a tour of the classrooms and learn your way around campus before classes start. These tours will start after the my.umary.edu information session. Student Ambassadors will be available to give tours during this time. 4:30 pm First Official Dinner of the School Year University Hall or Benedictine Center Dining Hall This is the first official dinner with all U-Mary students. Join your new classmates or meet returning students and enjoy a meal together. Get ready for an exciting ride over the next year. 9 pm Comedian Derek Hughes Arno Gustin Hall Get ready to be entertained! Derek Hughes, an award-winning comedian and magician, travels to college campuses all over the U.S. between performances at comedy and improv clubs. Get there early and be ready to be wowed!

7 WELCOME WEEK Events Tuesday, August 23 9 am 10:30 am : Honoring the Professoriate Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel All students are invited to join the entire university community during this beautiful ceremony. The faculty, dressed in full academic regalia, will process across campus to Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel, where they will participate in a prayerful service that celebrates those who serve our students in classrooms, laboratories, and in the field. Special recognition is given to those faculty members who have advanced in academic rank and earned additional academic degrees. 1 pm : Fall semester classes begin Wednesday, August am : First All-University Mass of the School Year Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel You are invited to the first Mass of the semester. You don t have to be Catholic to participate in the Mass; everyone is welcome. 9 pm : Praise the Lord (PTL) O Keeffe Hall Gather for contemporary praise and worship music! It s the perfect time not only for great music but also food, refreshments, and friends. Thursday, August am : First Convocation Butler Hall, Gary Tharaldson School of Business Weekly convocations (Thursdays at 11 a.m.) inform students on currents events, books, political ideas, interesting person, and much more. Convos are a great way to open your mind to new ideas! This convocation is led by U-Mary President Father Shea. Come and hear the president of our own University of Mary! 11 am 2 pm : Community Fair Leach Field House Please join us for the 10th annual community fair. Whether you are new to Bismarck-Mandan or lived here all your life, the Community Fair is your opportunity to become better acquainted with local businesses and organizations. Learn more about the products and services they offer, find out about part-time job opportunities, sign up for door prizes, and enjoy free food and give-a-ways! Don t miss this once a year event see you at the fair! 4:30 pm 7 pm : Back to School Outdoor Picnic, Music and Fun Outside University Hall and North Courtyard Please join us for an awesome meal, ice cream sundaes, and great time.
