SAN BERNARDINO The BULLETIN December 17, 1971 UPCOMING HOLIDAYS Friday, December 24, is an informal holiday for the College* Prior arrangements should be made by employees who wish to work that day and take off December 31 instead. Monday, December 27 is an administrative holiday. The P.E. Building, pool and facilities will observe the following hours during the holidays: Open: December 15 through 24-8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed weekends. Closed: December 25 through January 2, DEGREE CANDIDATES FOR SPRING MUST FILE BEFORE JAN. 26 Candidates for degrees to be awarded at the end of the Spring Quarter must file for graduation checks no later than January 26, in the Office of Admissions and Records. A $2 late fee will be charged after the January 26 deadline. Students who have questions about their graduation requirements are urged to contact Jo Ann Von Wald in the Admissions and Records office. Student Services Bldg. Registration for the Winter Term begins on January 3 in the Student Services Building. First to register will be graduate students,seniors and half of the juniors. On January 4 the remaining half of the juniors, all sophomores and freshmen will register. Classes begin Wednesday, January 5 be held on January 5. 3 EMPLOYEES ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS The State Legislature recently passed,and the Governor has signed,a bill which will provide coverage for administrative, academic and non-academic employees of the California State Colleges who meet designated eligibility criteria, effective January 1, No payroll deduction will be made for this benefit. Oscar Jackson, Personnel Officer, has been named Campus Unemployment Insurance Administrator. lutucuc^ik Alfred Egge (Biology) presented two lectures re- V lih iww ^ cently. He spoke on "Stress" before the Redlands Forum Club and at the Biology Department at Hayward State on "Comparative Review of the Avian Adrenal." Linnie R. Jackson (junior sociology student) has been awarded one of 63 Career Advancement Scholarships by the Business and Professional Women's Foundation for the school year. Larry Johnson (E.G.P.) spoke at the Palm Springs High School Football Banquet for the Black Academic Scholarship Assn. December 3. The Madrigal Singers, directed by Arthur Wenk, presented a program of Christmas music on Wed. to two organizations, the Rialto Women's Club and the Kiwanis Club. At the same Kiwanis Club meeting, Russell DeRemer was named Kiwanian of the Day. Bonham Richardson (Geography) has an article appearing this month in Caribbean Quarterly, "Guyana's Green Revolution - Social and Ecological Problems in an Agricultural Development Programme." The journal is published by the University of West indies in Jamaica. Dr. Richardson also presented a paper on Agricultural Planning in the Caribbean at meetings of the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers in Syracuse, New York. Alexander Sokoloff (Biology) participated in a symposium last week. on beetles at the Entomological Society of America meeting held J at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Dr. Sokoloff presented a q paper on flour beetles. CONGRATULATIONS - Mr. and Mrs. Marty Bloomberg (Library) welcomed their second child, a daughter, Stacey Ann, on December 4. Dr. and Mrs. Robert Senour (Audio-Visual) became the parents of a daughter, Andrea, born last Wednesday, weighing eight pounds. Dr. Glen Smith (Administration) is recuperating at Kaiser Hospital in Fontana following surgery last Monday. Dr. Smith will be able to have visitors after today at the hospital and at home following his release. 2

The Faculty Wives scholarship Fund is continuing to accept contributions,in care of Mrs. Naomi Saylor, 235 W. 55th St., Sa Bernardino HIRING FREEZE HAS THAWED The freeze on hiring State employees,which was initiated by the Governor's office last July,has now been lifted, as well as the freeze on a number of expenditure restrictions.

5 SOCIAL SECURITY EARNINGS TO CHANGE ON JANUARY 1 Effective January 1, earnings taxable under the Social Security Law will be changed. The 5.2 percent payroll deduction will remain unchanged, but will now apply to the first $9,000 of gross earnings instead of the previous ceiling of $7,800. For those whose gross annual earnings exceeded $7,800 in 1971, the Social Security deductions will begin again for the new calendar year as of the December pay warrant, dated January 1. This is because the tax year for State employees is from the December pay period to the December pay period. Building Maintenance Man, Painter Asst.
