Editor s Note: By Lt.Rita Parks How fast this year seems to have gone by for me. It seems like I just welcomed the new bridge for 2012 and now it is nearing time to think about our upcoming Change of Watch. Although we had a nice hot and dry summer it sure seems to have turned into Fall already. The leaves are turning and the temperatures are falling. But this is the time of year we gather for informative programs, conferences, and education. So keep up on what is happening in your squadron by attending the monthly meetings. Change of Watch is in December at The Lodge on the Green; this is where our bridge of 2012 steps down and we swear in and welcome the Bridge of So mark your calendars for 5 December and plan on coming to The Lodge on the Green for an excellent buffet dinner and our Change of Watch. 2 Coming up at our November meeting Presenting: SENECA SAILING ADVENTURES (A somewhat unplanned sailing business & retirement job) Capt. Terry Stewart 1 st mate, Lisa Oldroyd & Anchor (the sailing Chihuahua) Terry Stewart, a 30 year New York State Police Trooper, Sergeant and State Police Scuba Team member, turned sailor and retired (May to October) to a 38 foot Cabo Rico Pilothouse, on Seneca Lake, in Watkins Glen, at the Village Marina. Seneca Sail and Power Squadron educated to JN and American Sailing Association experienced via NJ School of Sailing. Coast Guard Capt. License via Marine Professional Training in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. Seneca Sailing has completed nearly 1000 charters in eight years. Lisa Oldroyd, from Coventry, Rhode Island, originally. Teaching Assistant in Odessa, NY turned 1 st Mate and educated to AP in the Seneca Sail and Power Squadron. Sailing all the years and guiding the alleged Captain. Ankie-pankie the sailing Chihuahua was added to the crew in 2011 and has semi- reluctantly completed two hundred three hour cruises on Seneca Lake. Other Trips by Terry and Lisa: March 2005, bare boat a 38 foot Island Packet around the American and British Virgin Islands. Terry: in January 2008, a 47 foot Stevens from Ensenada, Mexico to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Terry: November 2008, a 54 foot John Alden schooner from St. Thomas to Marathon, Florida, with unplanned six day stop in Cuba during a stormy blow. Terry and Lisa: February 2009, a 53 foot Irwin from Stock Island, Florida Keys to Marquesas Key (Fl) and return to Key West Channel. Goals: Maintain this business by gaining one or two partners, allowing us to sail south looking for another location. A warm one, with chartering potential from January to April. 2

7 RAMBLIN S ROUND THE RIVER By: Lt. Kevin G. Parks, AP (Star Reporter) Well Gentle Readers; It appears that the tail end of the storm Sandy caused minimal damage on our river. The RiverBoat Gambler lost a bit of canvas but sustained no serious injury despite the logs that look like torpedoes sailing down river with a current which would be unusually strong even in the spring. Now the weather has caused some delay in the Swing Bridge removal as the massive crane was towed up river to safety. But I am sure it will soon be back on the job. This was the last Halloween Bash at Pelican s Nest with a view of the bridge. Well most boats are out of the water; on the hard excepting The RiverBoat Gambler of course, but I ll be getting to her soon. Well Gentle Readers while I ve been writing this Ramblin s for near 10 years it seems about time to lay that up as well. Not match happens during our winter, so I think I will take a sabbatical and bid you farewell. In the future I may drop an occasional article as big things happen about the river. But in the mean time, as always...raise em Up! And live by the words of the River Rat! Believe me, my young friend, said the water rat solemely, there is nothing absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing about in boats or with boats. In or out of em, it doesn t matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don t; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you re always busy,and you never do anything in particular; and when you have done it there is always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you d much better not.
