2 Commander s Report Cdr Rick Hibbs, SN Happy New Year, and I hope you are looking forward to 2015 as much as I am! But before we preview the new year, I want to highlight a few things from last year (kind of like tuning in to a show that starts out with Previously on and catches you up). We tried a few new things and places for our traditional events, and had a great attendance upkick as a result. I ve received many positive remarks about having the Commander s Brunch at Rochester Yacht Club, and the June picnic meeting at the Irondequoit Fish and Game Club. We also expanded the Squadron Rendezvous by a day, and it turns out that that was also a big hit. The Executive Board met in December and were in agreement to try these things again! Details will be worked out for the Rendezvous, but it will again be Fri and Sat with travel to and from on Thur and Sun. The picnic will be on the water, and Rita Parks agreed to look at options, including the Fish and Game Club. I have set us up at the RYC for Commander s Brunch. The schedule so far will be found in the Chart, and will go onto our website, and be updated there. The New Year is starting out with a January General Meeting at GYC, with our long awaited speaker on the topic of resurgence of sturgeons in the Great Lakes. The Rochester Boat Show comes again on the Thursday just ahead of the Super Bowl, and we have upgraded our display equipment. We have a new TV and DVD player to help get our message to the public. Look for the signup list at the January meeting! Remember, after you work a shift at our booth, you have free admission to the rest of the Show!! We all will miss the contribution of Bob Roth, long time equipment manager for the boat show. Though Bob has passed over the horizon, our P/C John Zingo has volunteered to take over that job, and we are very grateful and ask that everyone continue to support the effort as much as we always did for Bob. We had a lot of new members join in the last year, and we intend to welcome them at the February meeting with New Members as the theme. We hope everyone, new and old, turns out for a big get acquainted party following a short business meeting on Wednesday Feb 4 th. Attendance dropped off for the Winterfest and plummeted for the Founder s Day dinner last year. My wife, Bridgett Arieno, JN, said she would come up with a new idea that would be fun! And she did! On Friday Feb 6, we have booked Holly Howell, wine columnist for the D&C newspaper, to work with Chef George at Rochester Yacht Club for a wine and food pairing event. Check the great flyer put together by Pat and Jack Howell (no relation to Holly!) for details. We intend this new event to replace TWO events this year (Winterfest and Founder s Day). Our Founder s Day remarks will be limited, and the wine and food talk by Holly will be very entertaining. A brief bio for Holly is included in this chart so you know a little about her. Again, this should be a FUN EVENT!! Our own P/D/C Mary Joyce D Aurizio has agreed to lead the Operations Training class this year. Pat and Jack Howell, and Jack Baker have already signed up, so call me at if you are interested. We hope to do this class before March. It will be done on weeknight evenings, not Friday or weekends. Let s go get started!! Newsletter 2
3 Education Department P/C Stephen D. Heffron, SN Phone: I hope that everyone has had a very merry holiday season. We just completed the Seamanship and Marine Electrical Systems courses. Congratulations to the following graduates. Seamanship: Emy Casper Thea Korbel Steve Kingdom Brenda Suhr Jeff Tallon Kathleen Foley Bill Towner Kevin Reilly Marine Electrical Systems: Thomas Nicholas Bill Towner Patricia Howell Jack Howell Donald Reaves Steve Wilde We are offering a Piloting course this semester. This is the next course for those students that have taken Seamanship and both Seamanship and Piloting are required as prerequisites for the Advanced Piloting course that will be offered in September. Piloting is the first course in the sequence of USPS courses on navigation, covering the basics of coastal and inland navigation. This course focuses on navigation as it is done on recreational boats today and embraces GPS as a primary navigation tool while covering enough of traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if their GPS fails. The course includes many in-class exercises, developing the student s skills through hands-on practice and learning. Ten classes of two hours each normally are scheduled for presentation of this course. In addition the students have seven days to complete the open book exam. We will also be offering Marine Communication Systems. This is the second in the three part series on Marine Electronics. These courses will be starting the second full week on January. Students wishing to take either of these courses need to call or me using the information above to register for the courses and get the starting dates and locations. Have a wonderful winter and Think Spring. Here s to Educated Boater s Everywhere! Newsletter 3

5 Administrative Officer Report Lt/C Jack Howell,P Hi Everyone, I thought I would share a few updates in this first issue of our 2015 Chart regarding upcoming Programs, and also share a few thoughts on our recent December Squadron meeting. 1st a quick review of our last meeting, our annual Squadron Change of Watch. Our Change of Watch was held at the Lodge on the Green, in the town of Greece. We had a moderate turn-out at the meeting. Those of us that attended enjoyed good fellowship at the bar before the dinner, and we shared an excellent buffet dinner. Mary Joyce D Aurizio served as our District Representative at the meeting. We were privileged to hear an excellent talk by Mary Joyce, as she shared her personal experience and enjoyment when she and her husband were active members of our Rochester Squadron. She also shared the challenges all of our volunteer driven organizations face today. Next, our Commander, Rick Hibbs gave us a presentation on our Squadron s accomplishments this past year, and our challenges going forward. One of the highlights stressed by Rick was the excellent participation in our Advanced Grade and Elective Classes. A direct result of these successful classes is the large number of new members in the Squadron. Rick shared that he will continue to personally pursue finding ways to actively engage our new members in Squadron activities and leadership positions. Looking ahead to our scheduled January meeting, on Wednesday, Jan 7th, we are looking forward to a presentation on the revival of the sturgeon population in the Genesee River. This talk will be given by: Dr. Jeff Wyatt, DVM, MPH, DACLAM, Professor and Chair, Dept. of Comparative Medicine, University of Rochester. Dr. Wyatt is also Director of Animal Health and Conservation at the Seneca Park Zoo. Dr Wyatt s talk will be preceded by a brief Squadron business meeting. In February, we are looking forward to our annual Founder s Day meeting. Our Commander has decided to take an innovative approach to celebrating our Founder s Day by combining it with a Food and Wine Tasting event at the Rochester Yacht Club! See the flyer that shares the specifics of this fun event, and I m sure Rick will be highlighting this event in his article in this publication. Also in the month of February, Rick will be hosting an informal get-together with all our new members. Rick will be reaching out to share his insight into Squadron activities, and share opportunities for finding ways to engage our newest members. By the time you receive this issue of the Chart, I m sure we will be just starting the New Year. I hope all of you have a Happy New Year, and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Squadron events. Newsletter 5

9 MEMORANDUM TO: Cdr. Richard Hibbs FROM: DAO Jeff Freedman DATE: December 3, 2014 RE: Rochester COW On behalf of the D6 Bridge, I send greetings, thanks and congratulations to the Rochester Sail & Power Squadron. Regrettably, a back problem resulting from a motor vehicle accident this Fall has flared up, precluding my attending your Change of Watch as planned, and D6 Commander Judy Swanson is also unable to attend. We thank you for combining your 75 th Squadron Anniversary Celebration with our 2014 D6 Spring Conference this year in what was a gala and memorable event hosted by your squadron. Seventy-five years ago, when boaters at Onondaga Yacht Club near Syracuse wanted to form a Squadron, a delegate was dispatched to Rochester to learn from your founders how to establish a Squadron. Syracuse celebrated its 75 th Anniversary this Fall; our squadron with your help was founded one year after yours. We especially appreciate the continued participation and leadership of Cdr. Hibbs, and the sustained service to USPS of Past District Commanders Michael Kelly and Gerald Zambroski. We congratulate all of your new officers and bridge members, and are confident that the Rochester squadron will continue to foster the USPS mission of boating safety through education while providing opportunities for camaraderie among fellow boaters. Knowing well from your Founder s Day dinner last year that your able Cdr. is a great teller of sea stories, I thank him for inviting me to entrust him with one of my favorites. USPS is all about boating safety; this story is about a famous captain who had a wellearned reputation for always sailing his ship safely through even the fiercest of storms. Sailors wanted to join his crew because they knew he would bring them home safely. The Captain had taken many Power Squadron courses and seminars, but he also had a secret slip of paper which he kept locked in a chest in a cabinet in his Captain s quarters. The key to the chest hung on a chain around the captain s neck. Whenever a storm broke, the captain would look out over the sea, then hurry into his cabin, unlock the chest, unfold the slip of paper, read what was written, then rush back onto the deck and shout out his orders. When conditions worsened, the captain would return to his cabin, consult the secret slip of paper, then return to the deck to shout out new orders. Through every storm, without exception, the captain, consulting his secret slip of paper, gave the orders that brought his ship safely to its destination. The sailors naturally wondered what was written on the slip of paper that the captain consulted during every storm. So one night the sailors opened a bottle of Pusser s Rum, which they had obtained at Foxy s Bar in the British Virgin Islands, and began offering drinks to the captain. By and by, the captain became drowsy, and before long, his head drooped down onto the Captain s table. The sailors carefully removed the key from around his neck, retrieved the chest from the Captain s cabinet, unlocked and opened the chest, then took out and unfolded the secret slip of paper. On that piece of paper were written these words: Starboard is right; port is left. Cheers and good tidings during this holiday season; like the famous captain, may you always reach your destinations safely. Newsletter 9
