6 COMMANDER Steve Goodnow, P Hello Saginaw Bay Power Squadron members. I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everybody who worked so hard to put together our Hospitality Room at the recent USPS D9 Spring Conference in Pontiac. P/C Spiller demonstrated her usual culinary and decorative flair in putting together one of the top rooms in the District. P/C Poirier, Treasurer Gary Poirier, P/C Bartlett, and P/C Tacey all contributed as well. We were so successful in having a good time, and showing our District visitors a good time, that the District folks asked us to close down a half hour early to give the other Squadron Hospitality Rooms a chance. It was just a rumor that the Oakland County Sheriff s Department was called because of the noise level in our room. The Deputy was there due to the behavior of some unsupervised high school hockey players in the room across the hall. Our food was superb, our beverages went down so easy, and the strobe light, lava lamp, black lights, music, our costumes and other decorations made our room truly a step back in time. It was a groovy time in the spirit of peace and love in the Age of Aquarius. For all of you who could not attend, you missed a classic. Mark October 11 th, 12 th, and 13 th on your calendars for the upcoming Fall Conference. The Fall Conference will be P/C Spillers last as Hospitality Chair so I am sure it will be special. Please plan on attending our May 7 th Awards Dinner Meeting. This is a very important social event in our Squadron year. Many members work behind the scenes tirelessly and this evening is an annual opportunity to recognize their valuable contributions. Several members were recognized at the Spring Conference and will receive their plaques or certificates at the Awards Dinner. I hope to see you all there. I am pleased to share that the ever elusive by-laws copy has finally been located. With the old copy and the recommendations from National, our By-laws committee will meet soon and begin the revisions. Think warm! Think spring! Page 5
7 From the SEO P/C James Bartlett, P Hello Everyone, We had a great time at the Spring Conference as you can tell. We will be starting a Seamanship class soon so if anyone is interested please let myself or Howard Deal know. Marine Electronics has been completed. Thanks go to Keith Anderson and Terry Mathews from the Flint squadron for their efforts in teaching that class. Below is an article I would like to share with everyone, it is about Senior Boating Safety. It has become quite apparent that most boating safety resource centers like the USCG Office of Boating Safety, The American Boating Association, The National Safe Boating Council and others lack the capacity to link recreational boating mishaps/accidents to the traits and conditions of aging boaters. Our good friends at Senior Boaters of America found that limited information on this subject first surfaced in the handbook and guide "The Book for Senior Boaters" a pioneer on this important topic. Although the information was limited, it definitely indicated a correlation between those boaters with the onset of many of the traits and conditions of human aging and a number of boating mishaps or near mishaps. Aging boaters can boat longer and boat safer by taking the proper steps with Senior Boaters Safety Education. That is why "Senior Boater Safety Education" is the fastest growing area within the recreational boating community. Ten thousand people each day celebrate their 65th birthday and this will be continue for the next decade, so the question of Senior Boater Safety has to be addressed sooner rather than later. There is extensive data on DUI and RECKLESS boating, but data on aging boater mishaps is obviously AWOL. We encourage each and every one who is involved in "boating safety" to become familiar with the aging traits and conditions that can effect safe boating operations. Only through this knowledge can we help those aging/senior boaters prolong their safe boating years. Safe Boating and see you soon Page 6
8 Administrative Officer Lt/C Ken Bublitz, P I hope all of you enjoyed Mike Kegley's presentation "USS Edson". The ship is scheduled to be moored at its' permanent dock before summer. In May the Squadron will start the month with our "Awards" meeting on May 7th honoring volunteers and also having some fun. Let's not forget the "Liberty Harbor Rendezvous" that begins on Friday afternoon May 31st with the annual tent construction. Our tent leader is Howard "Big" Deal and I will be assisting. All volunteers can contact us for times and assignments. For weekend dock space please call Liberty Harbor at I will see you and all of your guests at the May 7th "Awards Night". Safe boating Page 7
9 Treasurer Lt/C Gary Poirier, P FALL DINNER MEETING CHANGE There has been discussion pertaining to changing our monthly dinner day from Tuesday to Thursday. What brought this about was our attendance at the dinner meetings. As you might know the SBYC opens up the club and the kitchen just for the squadron on Tuesday. This is a workable environment as long as we have around 30 or more attendees. Since our member participation has dropped at our dinner meetings, example 19 in February and 17 in March, we are looking for options that is good for our membership and can work for the meeting site as well. The two options discussed were to change our meting date at the SBYC to Thursday or to move to a different location. The SBYC is regularly open on Thursdays, April thru November. Therefore they are not opening up the club and the kitchen just for the squadron and a surcharge would not be necessary do to lower attendance for those months. It simply means our club would meet on Thursday instead of Tuesday. Everything else stays the same. The second idea of moving to a different location might mean the dinner and cocktails will be optional after the business meeting. We would start the evening with our business meeting, our guest speaker if applicable, and then those that want to stay for a leisurely drink and/or dinner may do so. Or perhaps you might like to have dinner on your own before the 6:00 business meeting. Regardless, as you can see, change is in the future. I personally will open discussion about this important subject at our May dinner meeting. We hope to have a good voice to represent the future direction of this important part of the squadron s activity. See you on Tuesday May 7, 1800 for cocktail hour and dinner to be served at 19:00.
