2 Commander s Tent By Camp Commander Steve Bohling Brothers, Sisters and friends: I would like to thank you again for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve as Commander of the Lincoln Cushing Camp. I would also like to congratulate our newly elected Camp Officers for 2018: Charlie Bogino, Senior Vice Commander Eric Atkisson, Junior Vice Commander James Mazarin, Secretary/Treasurer Anthoni Rajotte, Patriotic Instructor Camp Council Members, PDC Ben Hawley, PDC Lee Stone, and PCC Calvin Zon I have also made the following appointments; Camp Chaplain: John Higgins, Graves Officer: Tom Boltz, Camp Historian: James Mazars de Mazarin, Camp Guard: Thomas Bohling. Thank you so much for volunteering! We still have a few positions that need to be filled. Positions available include Color Bearer, Camp Guide, and Memorials Officer. If any of our Camp vacancies sound interesting to you please contact me at cof16thwi@gmail.com. I only have one goal for Get out. Let s get out and tour some battlefields and museums together and share stories of our Ancestors. Let s get out and recruit new members by visiting events at battlefields, parades, and anywhere we can remind folks what our Ancestors did for this country. Let s get out and clean Headstones and Monuments. So, will you join me? Looking forward to a great 2018! 3 The News Walker Volume 20, #1 WINTER 2018 Remembrance Day 2017 By Steve Bohling Remembrance Day in Gettysburg is one of my favorite days, and this year was no different. Initially, my enthusiasm was lower than usual, with it being 38 degrees and constantly raining. However, once out and about talking with everyone and attending the different ceremonies, I found myself in a good mood and happy I could attend again this year. The family and I arrived about 9 in the morning. Each visit I like to drive around to the monuments where our family fought and take a few pictures in uniform. At 11 AM we were at the GAR monument for the Sons of Veterans Reserve ceremony. In the middle of a sea of umbrellas President Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address. Wreaths were laid and Battle Hymn of the Republic was sung. Once that ceremony was over we retreated to the car to dry off a little before heading over to the parade start. The parade route was changed and shortened in light of the threats made against the participants. The security was impressive and thankfully no disruptions occurred. After meeting and talking with other Brothers, we fell in for the start of the parade. Brother Thomas Bohling was carrying the 2nd Military District Flag while I carried our Camp Flag. Once the Parade was over it was a dash to the car for some warming up and drying off before our next ceremony. It is my goal each year during Remembrance Day to hold a Lincoln-Cushing Camp ceremony to remember a relative of our Camp. Whether they fought at Gettysburg or not we will take time on Remembrance Day and share their story. This year I shared the story of two of my relatives who fought with the 1st Minnesota. One survived the battle at Gettysburg, and one not. If you would like to share your relative s story for next year please let me know. Page 3

4 This year I remembered my Cousins Charles Loomis and Melvin Fuller. Charles C Loomis was born in 1842 in New York Mills, New York. His Mother Sarah died of cancer on May 15, 1860 at the age of 47. His father Asa committed suicide only a few days later on May 29 th They both were buried in Lowell Massachusetts. Asa was 18 years old. At some point after that, he moved west. I know there were Loomises in MN and WI. On April he enlisted has an Private into Company A 1 st at Fort Snelling Minnesota. He participated in the Battle of 1st Bull Run, Seven days Battles, Battles of South Mountain and Antietam, were he was briefly captured. He was at the battle of Battle of Fredericksburg, Va., and the Battle of Gettysburg. In addition to Charles, I had another relative in Company A, 1 st MN, Melvin Fuller. Melvin Fuller was born on July 22, 1840, in Greene, New York. He moved to Wisconsin in He was married three times and had six sons and two daughters. He died on August 1, 1911, at the age of 71, and was buried in Pardeeville, Wisconsin. From his obituary: Mr. Fuller enlisted in the 1st Minn. V. I., Co. A, for three years, and served three years and four days; his regiment went out with 1,010 men and when mustered out had only 104 men left of the original enlistment. Mr. Fuller was in the first battle of Bull Run, and the day after the battle, while "humping it" for Washington, to the best of their ability, it occurred to him that it was his 21st birthday; he said to his comrades in misfortune: "Boys, today I am 21 years old. I am a man, and running for dear life." He was never wounded, and never sick a day while in the service. Charles Loomis and Melvin Fuller were my family and among the 262 that charged. Only Melvin would muster among the 47 that survived. Charles Loomis was killed July the 2 nd, he was 21 years old. He was briefly buried here at Gettysburg and sometime after the battle he was moved and buried with his parents in Lowell, Massachusetts. Brother Thomas plants a Flag in memory of our relatives. 9 The December Camp meeting was highlighted by the addition of new Brother Kent Boese Brother Kent Boese lives in Washington DC and works has a librarian. Brother Kent s third great Grandfather Michael Batdorff, who enlisted as a private in 93rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Co. H. Private Batdorff was a POW and died at Andersonville.. Page 9

10 The News Walker Volume 20, #1 WINTER 2018 Rally Round the Flag, Boys! MEN WANTED FOR THE Potomac Guards, Company A!! The Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) is the ceremonial uniformed military component of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). The National Military Department of the SVR consists of the General Staff and seven geographical Military Districts across the nation. SVR Units participate in Civil War related ceremonies, parades, living history programs, and re-enactments. In the Future the Potomac Guards will be providing support for LincolnCushing Camp events, including Memorial Day and Remembrance Day. Membership in the Sons of Veterans Reserve is open to any Member (Hereditary), Junior (Hereditary), or Associate (Non-hereditary) of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Wreaths will be presented to honor the President who saved the Union. April 7th: Park Day Park Day is held annually, at National Parks around the Country. This year Lincoln Cushing Camp would like to invite you to Manassas National Battlefield Park and participate in this years event. Page 11

From battlefields to forts, monuments and museums, the Washington, DC area is truly rich in Civil War history. As part of our mission statement we, as the SUVCW camp representing this area, have an obligation to aid in the preservation of these treasures and help make them accessible to the public, especially to our young people. Assistance in providing support in the areas of preservation and education is often requested of us, additionally our camp has projects that we would like to initiate. Too many to financially support on the small percentage of our annual dues that stays within the camp treasury. That is why in early 2015 we announced the start of a fund to help us support key projects --The Lincoln-Cushing Education and Preservation Fund (LCEPF).
