Lewis rogerlewisclt@gmail.com Very first and very important for our LNSPS 2018 calendar is our January 9 th annual meeting and then our February 13 th Change of Watch. These are among two of the most important Squadron dates. Secretary Position Vacant Chaplain Jim Barbara barbarajeb@aol.com It s now 2018 and I want to wish all members and their families a very Happy and Healthy New Year On January 9 th all of our Bridge officers will give their yearly report along with various committee members. In addition, we have the election of our new Bridge officers for the year I m hoping all members will try to attend. LNSPS on the internet: localusps/lakenorman/ Our other important date is the Change of Watch on February 13 th. Our old Bridge will be released and our new elected Bridge will all be sworn in.

I personally look forward to being a part of both our District and Squadron's everchanging and

3 Pat Hakanson from District will be conducting the COW. Again, we look forward to seeing as many members possible for these two important dates. 4 Executive Officer P/C Steve Stuart AP America s Boating Club Xo Report Annual Meeting Year End Review Jan Our LNSPS 2017 year was again a very active year. One of the last orders of business in 2017 was to fill nominations for the election of Bridge Officers and Executive Committee Members. A full slate of Bridge Officers has been filled with six Executive Committee Members ready to be elected at our Annual Meeting on January 9 th. The Nominating and Rules Committee chairs are in place due to the restructuring plan in 2017, but we still need an Audit Chairperson to finalize these positions. The Standing Committees of Planning and Budget/Finance Chairpersons are also in place. The Commander's appointments of over 24 members of Associated Committee Chairs, event Chairs and Squadron responsibilities will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Remember, winter training at D27 is Jan 20 th in Cary, NC. This training is intended for new Officers or Members needing updates on new topics or refreshers for Members who may have forgotten through the years. The Vessel Safety Check Program, staffed by Alex Cooper and fellow examiners, is another successful program. Together they completed over 200 examinations in This VSC Program is one of our Squadron's major goals. It helps us Get The Word Out" about our Squadron and for years has provided a safer boating environment for boat Captains and families on Lake Norman. At the Charlotte Mid-American Boat Show, we again combined three local area Squadrons (Catawba, Charlotte and the Lake Norman Squadrons). We combined these efforts to create Community Civic Awareness in Education, VSC examinations and answered numerous questions from our local-area boating community. We emphasized to all that we are a fun and active boating organization. We again used the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer as a method to draw additional area boaters and especially families to our booth. The actual count of contacts was over 900 visitors. We considered a contact as one who stopped at the booth and asked specific questions about ABC/VSC/Membership/ Simulator/Training/etc. Clearly, the Virtual Trainer Simulator was the big attraction for our booth and soon became common knowledge throughout the boat show to the crowd of adults and children. Youth Day on Lake Norman was conducted for the 18 th year. Thanks to

5 Davidson College for the use of their lake-front property. We had over 30 LNSPS volunteer members, six volunteer boats, 102 area youth with six associated staff members and six Davidson college students serving as lifeguards and dock safety assistants. We totaled over 291 hours of member volunteer help in one of our biggest civic events of the year. Beach swimming activities were well attended and supervised by lifeguards from Davidson College. Boat rides and rafting activities were conducted in a safe manner, supervised by Dock Master Jim Carver and Monroe Cowan as assistant. Davidson College students were assigned to check life jacket sizes and make adjustments, support safe boat arrivals and departures, and facilitate safe passenger loadings. Gifts, a big hit by all, were given by the Panthers Organization and Tommy Hilfiger organizations. Note that AMG Maritime Insurance, IKEA, Panthers Organization, Publix and numerous other Sponsors have already pledged to support us this year when we again start our LNSPS Civic Events Sponsorship Program on February 1, Lake Norman Sail and Power Squadron an award-winning and successful volunteer boating organization every year. Attending the Dragon Boat Races was one of our other fun, Civic Summer events and another way to Get the Word Out about how our Squadron can support our Boating Public. Congratulations to all Officers, Event Chairs and numerous duties performed by Squadron Volunteers to make our

6 Education Officer (SEO) P/C Russ Klein, SN Education Department It s winter and there s nothing to do? FALSE!!!! Now s the time to hone your boating knowledge and help others do the same. Consider these options: #2: Your squadron needs help manning our booth at the show. Duties include directing visitors to our displays, help manage the active boating simulator and try it yourself, tell visitors about our Public Education program and the courses that follow, encourage visitors to attend a meeting and consider becoming a member of Americas Boating Club. You will also meet members of other USPS Squadrons. #1: Sign up to help at the Mid- Atlantic Boat Show in Charlotte. This is the product showcase everyone waits on. Freshly unwrapped 2018 product will be on display for you and your family to come see and board during this once-ayear event. Browse through Cruisers, Deck Boats, Fishing Boats, Family Sport Boats, Personal Watercraft, Pontoon Boats, Wakeboards & Ski Boats, and so much more. It is by far the finest that the marine industry has to offer. All on display for 4 DAYS ONLY DON'T MISS IT! You might find that dream boat (new or used) as I did, that you didn t know you needed! J #3: Attend one of our classes. Marine Electrical Systems meets on Thursday evenings from 7 9 PM at the Peninsula Yacht Club. Drop in and see what the course is all about. In March we will begin Advanced Piloting. You can go online ( departments/13000/13000-educational- committees/13190/13190-advanced- piloting) and read about this course or give me a call. #4: Read the Seafarer and squadron regularly as I post more information on upcoming education programs. We will be offering the seminar on Using VHF/DSC Radios later in the spring. Better yet, come to our monthly meetings and we can talk more.

8 BOATING CONFIDENCE ZONE A Major Focus of America s Boating Club Fire Kidde Extinguisher Alert It has been reported on NBC that there is an issue with certain Kidde fire extinguishers. Certain extinguishers may have a plastic handle trigger mechanism that could fail or even worse could cause some sort of explosion that can kill. All members should check their extinguisher on their boats and their inhouse extinguisher to make sure your extinguisher has only a metal handle/trigger. If not, it should be replaced. The Lake Norman Marine Commission, residents of Lake Norman and users of Lake Norman are dependent on the efforts of the various law enforcement agencies on the lake to enforce the laws and ordinances regarding lake use, please contact the lake patrol division of the County in which you reside and/or NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Catawba County: Iredell County: Lincoln County: The Lake Norman Marine Commission has asked that we coordinate reporting of problems with ATONs thru one source by each organization. P/C Russ Klein, SN -INC has agreed to serve as the point-ofcontact for the Lake Norman Sail & Power Squadron. Should you observe any such problems please contact Russ and include as much information as possible: date reported, ATON description, nature of problem, GPS location (if possible), contact information (if follow-up is needed). This will then be forwarded onto the LNMC Commissioner for that county (so as to be in the informational loop) and to the LNMC contractor for repair. It will also be placed on a list of Navigation Aids needing service, which will be posted on the LNMC web site to inform the public. (cont.)
