3 Education Officer (SEO) P/C Russ Klein, SN As we head into the month of May preparations for our final ABC class are underway. We have nearly 60 students registered for this class and registrations continue. This is a record for a single class. With this in mind we will need extra help with set up and tear down for this event. Set up will be on Friday afternoon, May 11 at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius. Tear down will commence around 4:30 PM at the end of the class on May 12. We need help with tables and chairs as well as carting education equipment to and from the class room. If you can help and have not already volunteered, please let me know. We can also use help during the class to assist with knot tying. If you can tie a bowline and a cleat hitch, you are qualified to help! J USPS, you will receive a discount, lowering the cost to less than we could offer it thru the squadron. There is a revenue bonus to the squadron that is paid directly once the class is completed. So, I suggest you go to the national website where it says find a course and have a look around. Contact me if you need assistance. Here s the link you ll need: education-matters/ Respectfully submitted, P/C Russ Klein, SN SEO (704) russklein45@charter.net Lake Norman Sail & Power Squadron TM We are Americas Boating Club R For Boaters, By Boaters SM A few weeks ago, I decided to try one of the on-line seminars offered by USPS thru the University of Western Florida. I took the seminar on VHF/VHF DSC Radios and was very pleased with the entire process starting with registration thru course completion. The material was presented with voice and slides and easy to follow. The bonus, as a member of

6 BOATING CONFIDENCE ZONE A Major Focus of America s Boating Club Meet the Sensational Six. Six sensational instructors, that is. I would like to take the time to congratulate each of our newest ABC instructors: Terry Middleton, Barry Read, Roger Lewis, Alex Cooper, Mark Epstein and Keith Reinsmith. Each hold an important part in the Lake Norman Sail and Power Squadron. Terry has served as our Administrative Officer for quite a few years. He has been a huge part of our ABC classes from behind-the-scenes. Terry will be one of our on-the-water instructors. Keith Reinsmith has been an active member for several years. He has participated in numerous Youth Day activities and ABC classes. Keith will also be one of our on-the-water instructors. Alex Cooper is currently our Vessel Safety Check Officer and has been a Vessel Examiner since Alex has been a member since 1987 and was the Commander of the Winston Salem Squadron in the early 1990's. Keith Reinsmith (individual) Right to Left: Roger Lewis, Fred Esenweld, Barry Read, Terry Middleton, and Mark Epstein Flanked by their Instructor, Jim Barbara Congratulations and Thank You for your Service Roger Lewis is our current and past Treasurer. Roger has been a huge asset to the ABC classes. Roger grew up on the shores on Long Island, NY. He has spent many hours on the Long Island Sound fishing and boating. Roger has been involved with the ABC classes by helping in any way possible-- proctoring, taking ID photos, and helping with the knots.

7 BOATING CONFIDENCE ZONE A Major Focus of America s Boating Club Mark Epstein grew up on the coast of Massachusetts and spent a lot of time boating with his father on Buzzard's Bay. Mark is more than willing and able to do anything that needs to be done -- boat shows, proctoring or simply just saying he is available to help. I know Mark will be more than willing and able to be an ABC instructor. Barry Read comes to us from South Africa so you have to love his accent!! Barry joined us about a year ago and he and his wife, Sue, have been stepping up and helping from every direction -- from raffles, helping with our 40th Anniversary to boat shows. I know Barry will succeed as an instructor. Please take the time to congratulate each of these gentlemen because they have worked hard to succeed in being an instructor. Looking forward to working with each of you at all of our ABC courses. Best Regards, Kat Savage, Secretary Congratulations Linda Reinsmith! Awarded The Special Member Award for her outstanding service to our Squadron. THANK YOU LINDA

The Lake Norman Marine Commission, residents of Lake Norman and users of Lake Norman are dependent on the efforts of the various law enforcement agencies on the lake to enforce the laws and ordinances regarding lake use, please contact the lake patrol division of the County in which you reside and/or NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
