Rotary International District 7730 Newsletter August, 2009 this issue True Confessions of a District Governor P.2 On Membership P.4 Youth Exchange P.6 Nancy B. Barbee District Governor District 7730 Eastern North Carolina USA Foundation Seminar Wallace August 27, 2009 Zone Foundation Chair, Joe Mulkerin, conducted a training for District Leaders before the general session. District Chairs P.12 & 13 Governor s Schedule P.15 DG Nancy had to laugh during her presentation at Morehead Soundview Club when they held up their signs. "It was hysterical and great fun. Thanks for making my day." she said. Can't wait to get back to my club and tell them about those District Simplified Grants. District Polio Chair PDG Bill Walker talks to the group about Polio and the Bill Gates $355 million challenge. President Stowe listens intently to Zone Foundation Chair Joe Mulkerin. Annual Program Fund Chair, DGN Mark Lynch, answers questions about PHF recognition points. How many does YOUR club need to become a 100% PHF club?

Rotarians never cease to amaze and astound me with their good works and huge hearts. This was evidenced in The Rotary Club of Jacksonville when President Buddha presented me with a $2,000 check for Polio during my Official visit. Another first for the District after President Wayne, of Maysville, announced that every member had become a Sustaining Member in July. Congratulations and many thanks to these clubs for leading the way. Traveling the District puts you on such a natural high that it is hard to slow down. I can't say enough about the distinct opportunity I've had being in this position. I'm constantly reminded of the concerns each member has for their local community and the differing personalities and culture found in each club. It's at the club level where Rotary happens and I can't ever lose sight of that fact. Rotarians know how to have a good time, laugh at themselves, crack jokes, build bridges, and make you smile all the while bringing tears to your eyes as they tell of their activities and civic pride. Such service to humanity I've been privy to witness time and time again. I've been to the Kinston Indians game with Richlands, dubbed "The Governess" in Sneads Ferry, discovered more of our history and heard about the beginnings of the Polio challenge in Lumberton, seen the historic buildings in Bladenboro, met wonderful people in Fairmont and Elizabethtown. I've seen the club leadership plan in action in South Brunswick Island, talked about military clubs at Jacksonville Breakfast, been given a pledge for girl child education in Lenoir County and Kinston Evening, and seen why District leaders come from Morehead City Noon. I've heard about new and innovative fund raisers from Beaufort Ole Town, watched the inner workings of Swansboro Board of Directors, and gotten "the treatment" at Morehead Soundview. I've seen small clubs, medium clubs, and big clubs. I've been honored to have presented Paul Harris Fellows. I've seen new clubs, old clubs, clubs with rich histories and clubs making new memories. I want to write in detail about every club visit so you might learn, as I have, the outstanding works and accomplishments in District It will take some time so please be patient but I do believe it is Important. I d like every club to prepare a display of their projects for the District Conference, so we might learn from each other and form lasting bonds The bond of Rotary. Special thanks to, Sergeant -at- Arms, John Kopka for following me around in Onslow County. A big help since my directional challenges kick in even with a GPS. There are some issues using a GPS that one finds quite annoying. Has anyone else found themselves taken down roads that are simply NOT THERE??. Thank you John. It is my hope that you will learn from this newsletter and find some humor as well. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend and remember, DREAM BIG because, "The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands". 2

Kalyan Banerjee, a member of the Rotary Club of Vapi, Gujarat, India, since 1972, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in Banerjee will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates. Banerjee said he would like to see Rotary "blossom from being the world's most recognized service organization to being the most important NGO [nongovernmental organization] in the world. "Rotary, it is said, has the strength of a government and the tenderness of a parent," he added. Banerjee is a director of United Phosphorus Limited, the largest agrochemical manufacturer in India, and the chair of United Phosphorus (Bangladesh) Limited. He is a member of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society, a past president of Vapi Industries Association, and former chair of the Gujarat chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry. Banerjee also serves as a trustee of Rotary club-sponsored trusts that support many educational and community development programs in India, including a 250-bed hospital. He noted that Rotary's strengths include its ability to attract leaders from different vocations around the world, as well as its role in promoting peace. "Rotary needs to become the preferred organization for today's generation to join and participate in, to make the world better and safer and happier," he said. Banerjee's wife, Binota, is a social worker and Inner Wheel club member. The couple have two children and four grandchildren. The nominating committee members are: John F. 4 This Month s Rotary Theme is Membership There has never been a Rotary year I can remember where one of the primary areas of emphasis has not been the expansion of membership. The only way we can do more good in the world is to get more good people to help us, more Rotarians! There are three things that immediately come to mind when I think of membership: getting new members, retention of existing members and forming new clubs. Thank You Very Much to our Newsletter Team for August; When it comes to getting new members PDG John Eller our District Membership Co-Chair says: I have a simple statement: JUST ASK! Only nineteen percent of Rotarians ever ask a friend, business associate or a stranger to attend Rotary and hear how Rotary makes a difference in their communities. Most club leaders I have observed don t emphasize the importance of addressing retention, recruitment and development of club members. I volunteered to speak to every club in the District about membership but only one person invited me to speak at their Club. Going into the year, the Wilmington Rotary Club created a Membership Recruitment Committee and a Member Retention Committee. The Membership Recruitment Committee upgraded the membership materials to include an updated membership packet with a checklist for sponsors, created a club brochure for use with prospective new members, and followed-up with club visitors/guests by sending a postcard. They ran ads in the Wilmington Business Journal featuring a different member each month to give the club more visibility. The Member Retention Committee, under the leadership of President Jeff Newman set up "Rotary 101", a program received from the Long Beach, California Club and personalized for the Wilmington Rotary. New members attend the monthly sessions held on third Tuesdays right before their regular club meetings. The curriculum is based on the book "A Century of Service" and taught by club leaders - many of whom are Past Presidents. Immediately involving new members in projects and club business as well as having club socials, helps to integrate new members into the club so that they can be retained. The Wilmington Rotary Club recruited and inducted 26 new members last year. How many members did you add to your club last year? Melissa S. Hight, District Membership Co-Chair and a member of the Wilmington Rotary Club. District 7730 also led the way in expansion by adding whole new Rotary Clubs to the district. To form a club you need only twenty potential members committed to forming a Rotary Club. There are now two types of clubs that can be formed, the traditional club and the new generation club. New generation clubs are basically Rotary Clubs with lots of service above self but without the traditional food service of a meal at every meeting. DGN Mark Lynch Fayetteville Lafayette Melissa Hight Wilmington An often overlooked method of expansion is the addition of Interact and Rotaract clubs. The Interact club members are high school aged kids and the Rotaract club members are college aged young adults. Both of these club types could better be described as clubs for Rotarians in training because of the high percentages of members who ultimately become Rotarians. So, in conclusion and in the words of John Eller, ask someone to come to your next Rotary meeting. You might change their life and become someone they will never forget as the person who sponsored them into Rotary. If they do become a Rotarian the number of lives they will positively impact through a lifetime of Rotary effort will be astronomical. Remember, the future of Rotary is in YOUR hands! Mark N. Lynch Fayetteville Lafayette Rotary, DGN John Eller Swansboro 4

DGN Mark Lynch Paul Harris Society Banners Have Arrived A first for District 7730, Paul Harris Society Banners, were presented to The Rotary Clubs of Fayetteville LaFayette and South Brunswick Island at the Foundation Seminar on August 27th in Wallace. PHS members pledge an annual $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. If your club would like a PHS banner, please let Foundation Chair Johnny Robertson know. Your club will be responsible for ordering the PHS name plates to place on the banner. 5

WHAT S NEW WITH YOUTH EXCHANGE IN DISTRICT 7730? Well, we re off to a great start this year! Special thanks go to the Newport Rotary club and the Cape Fear Rotary club. These two clubs stepped up to the plate to participate in the Youth Exchange program, and I think if you were to ask either club how they feel about the experience, they d have very positive responses to share. The Newport Club is sponsoring Lena Mueller from Hamburg, Germany. Lena is staying with PDG Bevin Wall and his family. Earlier in the summer, Bevin and Pam s daughter, Madison, traveled to Hamburg to stay with the Muellers. Madison confessed she did not know a word of German before departing the U.S., but with her resourcefulness and outgoing personality, she and her host family had a wonderful visit and she had the opportunity to see some amazing sights. In turn, the Wall s have traveled up and down the east coast, showing Lena some of our beautiful land. If you ask Lena what her favorite part of her visit is, she ll tell you she loves going to the beach. Antonin Forgeois has just arrived last week from Stutzheim, France. He is the sponsored guest of the Cape Fear Rotary Club and his host family is Bill and Linda Jones. Antonin is spending the entire school year here in Wilmington and will be attending Ashley High School. Antonin s desire while here is to learn excellent English. And actually, he is already well on his way to accomplishing his goal. Hopefully your club will have the opportunity to meet Antonin sometime during the year. We d welcome the invitation to come and speak at a club meeting, with the hope of sparking your interest in participating in next year s Youth Exchange. The students who travel through RI s Youth Exchange program are truly remarkable and a pleasure to spend time with. Just an update on the young man from Argentina looking for a host family. Although there were several inquiries, particularly from the Wilmington and Kinston areas, we were unable to find a host family for this young man. To those who ed asking for information, thank you. Yours in Service above Self, Vanessa Ervin Youth Exchange District Chair Madison Wall and Lena Mueller at the Rotary meeting at the Newport Rotary club. They are both lovely young women and wonderful ambassadors for Rotary. Lena is here until September 2nd. 6

AG Denny Jordan Area 4 District 7730 On August 14th, District Governor Nancy Barbee, Assistant Governor Area #4 Denny Jordan, South Brunswick Island Club President Bob Stinson, District Governor's Special Representative Gary Younts and Jon David of Leland met to discuss a new club in the Leland and Belville area of Brunswick County. Leland has been a focus for District 7730 for many years, and we now have a champion to help get a club chartered. An additional meeting on August 19th in Leland included Gary, Denny and Tim Daniels of the South Brunswick Islands Club along with Jon and George Murray of Leland. Tim will be assisting Gary in his district duties with the new club. Tim alerted Assistant Governor Denny of the growing initiative led by Jon to start a Rotary Club in Leland. Jon and George have already spoken with dozens of additional potential new Rotarians, and they are in the process of completing the New Club Survey and other documents. A meeting location, day and time has not been set, but Jon and George feel a breakfast club will better suit the needs of this fast growing dynamic area of Brunswick County. The board of directors of the South Brunswick Islands Club has already voted to become a sponsor of the new club, and Special Representative Gary Younts indicated he is awaiting word on a co-sponsor club from New Hanover County. All clubs in Brunswick and New Hanover County have been alerted to this exciting news. South Brunswick Islands President Bob Stinson has alerted his board to stand ready to help the new club. Bob brings experience as District Trainer and as a professor at Rotary Leadership Institute to help the club. South Brunswick Islands has adopted the Club Leadership Plan, and District Special Representative Gary Younts plans to encourage leadership in the new club to adopt the Club Leadership Plan as it gets ready to seek a charter. Jon and George feel they could easily see 30 charter members from the local area. Meetings are underway to select charter officers and get the club chartered by early Winter. Stay tuned for more news as Rotary grows in Brunswick County. Denny Jordan Assistant Governor - District 7730 Rotary International 7

A Message from GSE Chair, Dave Baggett Solicitation for Applications for Group Study Exchange Team Leader to Trinidad and Tobago I am asking everyone to identify and encourage experienced Rotarians to apply for the position of Group Study Exchange Team Leader of the District 7730 Group Study Exchange Team that will be visiting Trinidad and Tobago in the March-April 2010 timeframe (current dates are March 28-April 25, 2010). We intend to select an outstanding Rotarian as Team Leader and an equally outstanding Rotarian as Alternate Team Leader. Qualifications of the GSE Team Leader: Be an experienced Rotarian, especially in international service, well-informed on our Country and on Rotary. Where to look for Great GSE Team Leader Candidates: Your Club leadership Club Presidents and other Club leaders are excellent possibilities for experienced and qualified GSE Team Leaders. Change is collected, teachers use it as a tool to teach world health issues and Rotarians use it as a tool to teach about Polio eradication and Rotary. District Simplified Grants are used for local and international projects but Matching Grants, must have an international partner? CRS means Club Recognition Summary?? DDF means District Designated Funds and that one half of the contributions we make this year will come back to our District three years from now? The new membership slogan is Reach One, Keep One? 11 Rotarians are responding enthusiastically to the new membership slogan, "Each Rotarian: Reach One, Keep One." "The slogan is a gentle reminder to do it!" notes John T. Capps III, a member of the Rotary Club of Morehead City-Noon, North Carolina, USA. "Keep a 3 x 5 card handy at all times to record that moment in time when the name of a potential member flashes in your thoughts." Each Rotarian: Reach One, Keep One.
