1 JOB POSTING POSITION TITLE: CLASSIFICATION: DEPARTMENT: POSITION REPORTS TO: Director of Advancement Communications Exempt Institutional Advancement Vice President for Institutional Advancement (may be subject to change) ABOUT KING S COLLEGE King's is a Catholic, comprehensive college in the liberal arts tradition founded in 1946 by the Congregation of Holy Cross from the University of Notre Dame. Located in downtown Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, this community of approximately 2,500 students prides itself on professional preparation, personalized attention, and a caring community. Founded to educate the sons of coal miners, King s continues to serve the children of the working class with approximately 40% of our undergraduate students who will be the first in their family to graduate from college. 2 INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITY King s is at an exciting moment in its history. The College is in a place of fiscal stability, strategic growth, and incredible opportunity as we evolve into our next comprehensive campaign. The College seeks a Director of Advancement Communications to lead the effort to tell the King s story in ways that advance our mission through the engagement of alumni, parents, and friends. The successful candidate will join a team of energetic and enthusiastic professionals committed to the King s mission, and mindful that the better our team performs, the greater the impact on our students opportunities and experiences. Identifying the right candidate to assume this important leadership position is a key priority. JOB FUNCTIONS The Director of Advancement Communications ( Director ) will partner with colleagues throughout the Institutional Advancement Division to increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support. He or she will think strategically, plan comprehensively, communicate persuasively, and work closely with development, alumni relations, donor relations, and other professionals to help plan, create, develop, and execute on efforts to present King s as a cause worthy of engagement and financial support. The Director will also work with the College s marketing and communications team to develop and implement messages and themes for successful fundraising efforts, consistent with the College s branding and messaging. The Director will report to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. This reporting structure may change as the Institutional Advancement team continues to grow and evolve. ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS Key responsibilities will include: Creating, implementing, managing, and assessing an Advancement communications plan (including calendar, timeline, content, ownership, etc.). Leading and managing the portfolio of Advancement communications to ensure that messaging content is consistent, cohesive, and compelling, and that the means of distributing that content is appropriate and effective (e.g., website, , social media, video, photography, direct mail, publications, etc.). Leading the planning, implementation, management, and assessment of shortterm and long-term marketing campaigns to increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support. This includes communications focused on (in alphabetical order): o Advancement events o alumni engagement o annual giving 2

3 o comprehensive campaign o donor relations/stewardship o grants o major giving o planned giving Serving as primary liaison with the College s Marketing and Communications team (e.g., managing assignments, support requests, work flow, prioritizing projects) Specific priorities within distinct categories include: General o Create, implement, manage, and assess the Advancement communications plan o Ensure there is a clear, compelling, and consistent voice for King s Advancement efforts, and weave same through all communications o Create, develop and/or edit content in partnership with Advancement colleagues (e.g., appeals, alumni e-newsletters, spiritual reflections, invitations, web copy, stewardship/impact reports, etc.) o Partner with Marketing & Communications to ensure alignment of planning and messaging with core brand o Ensure full suite of Advancement communication materials are on brand, visually and in messaging content o Manage photographers and videographers for enterprise shoots (e.g., a full day each season to build the database) o Manage photographers and videographers for project-specific shoots (e.g., campaign events) o Manage development and deployment of surveys to inform Advancement strategies Comprehensive Campaign o Create, develop and manage core messaging content, materials, and delivery vehicles for campaign priorities o Create customizable templates for annual giving, major gift, and planned gift solicitations o Maintain an easy-to-access, updated archive of campaign materials for team use o Help manage messaging strategy for campaign-related events King s Magazine o Work with Marketing and Communications team to deliver high quality publication on a consistent schedule 3

4 o Develop plan to maximize creation, production, and delivery of magazine as appropriate o Partner with Marketing & Communications team to manage editorial calendar, theme/content development, writing assignments, and design o Responsible for preparing, gathering, and/or editing substantive Advancement content Websites o Develop and manage content for layout and design of Advancement s web presence, in close partnership with subject matter experts (e.g., campaign, annual giving, alumni relations, Advancement events) o Manage and report on analytics for Advancement web, , and social media efforts Social Media Video o Develop voice of and strategy for King s Advancement on social media. Ensure there is a purpose for utilizing available platforms, which ultimately drives content direction and constituent engagement o Responsible for creating, managing, and distributing Advancement social media communications o Lead discussion of how best to study social media engagement to advance conversations and relationship with alumni and donor prospects o Partner with Advancement colleagues on social media strategies (e.g., campaign, donor impact, giving days, Homecoming) o Manage strategy driving and production of Advancement videos, building an overarching narrative that runs through all relevant communications QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor s degree is required. Strong candidates will have a minimum of 5 years of marketing/communications experience. Understanding of higher education advancement best practices related to communication, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship would be helpful. Other qualifications include: 1. Demonstrated strength in the written word, and with creating, editing, and managing written materials. 8. Demonstrated strength in design. 9. Ability to work independently and satisfy defined metrics for success. 10. Ability to work with volunteers, including stakeholders like the Board of Directors, the President s Council, volunteers, and similar constituents. 11. Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds, personalities, and life experiences on the team, on campus, and in the community. 12. Ability to build effective relationships with colleagues across campus and in the community. 13. Willingness and ability to travel, as necessary. 14. Willingness and ability to work weekends and evenings as required. 15. Possess a valid driver s license. 16. High energy. 17. Sense of humor. 18. Team player. 19. Hunger to be successful. PROFICIENIES Strong candidates should be proficient in the use of MS Office programs, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They also should have some experience and familiarity with: key Adobe programs, in particular Photoshop, Acrobat, and InDesign facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms website CMS platforms (e.g., Drupal or WordPress).
