3 From thechair In 1992, 16 community leaders convened to lay the foundation for the future of leadership in Thurston County. The result was Leadership Thurston County (LTC), a program of the Thurston County Chamber Foundation. Since the first Class of 1994, over 450 graduates have embraced their role as community stewards. Serving as business leaders, public officials, directors and board members of charitable and civic organizations, and hands-on volunteers, they are actively involved in improving Thurston County and beyond. In , we celebrated twenty years of growing community leaders. We are proud to share some of this year s highlights with you. Context, connections and a well-rounded view are fundamental to being an effective local leader. LTC opens the door to our community and provides a foundation for leadership in the direction you choose. 4 About Us Leadership Thurston County develops informed, skilled, and committed leaders. As one of the premier leadership programs in Washington, graduates hold leadership positions throughout the greater South Sound region. Leadership Thurston County (LTC) is a program of the Thurston County Chamber Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. A volunteer Board of Regents composed of community leaders oversees the program. The program is designed to benefit: Participants, who learn about local issues, build community networks, gain an understanding of how the community connects, and explore leadership opportunities. Employers, who gain from the career development of their employees and their support of community leadership development. Our community, which is better able to tackle present and future challenges by developing a continually renewed pool of engaged civic leaders. Farra Vargas LTC Class of 2012 Efficiency Outreach Manager, Puget Sound Energy LTC exceeded my personal expectations. Each Challenge Day brought to light the interconnectedness of our community and the need for public and private partnerships, as well as emphasizing the value of finding your passion. Involvement comes in many forms. Whether behind the scenes in a volunteer capacity or serving on a board, everyone has something to contribute. Our Program During the 10-month program that begins in September and ends in June, participants explore issues affecting our community through meetings with local leaders, site visits and group and individual activities. The year includes opening and closing retreats and day-long sessions called Challenge Days. Challenge Days focus on a different segment of the community each month, including education, business and economic development, government, law and justice, health and human services, arts and culture, and the environment. The experience-based curriculum emphasizes community stewardship and the interrelationship of issues affecting Thurston County. By paying attention to participant feedback, we strive to continually improve LTC, making it relevant to community issues and class needs. Participants are expected to participate by facilitating some aspect of the program the following year. Volunteers Volunteers are the backbone of the Leadership Thurston County program. While not reflected on the balance sheet, it is estimated that volunteers contribute approximately 2,800 hours per year. The 13 committed members of the Board of Regents both ensure the financial viability of the organization and actively participate on program standing committees. These committees include Board Operations, Finance, Curriculum, and the Distinguished Leader Awards. In addition, board members help plan and execute the class Challenge Days and retreats. Annually, over 100 community leaders generously share their time and resources with LTC class members, to provide a unique experience rich in information, connections and leadership perspectives. These leaders represent all sectors of the community and spend a substantial amount of time preparing for and presenting each day of training.

5 2012 Program Highlights In 2012, 33 people from 25 diverse organizations completed the Leadership Thurston County program, and a milestone of 450 graduates was achieved. A video of the year s events is available on the LTC website, Case study and leader interview elements were introduced to the program curriculum. Teams of participants researched case studies developed for each Challenge Day and reported back to the class. Focusing on community assets activities, programs or facilities that are making an important contribution to Thurston County the case studies provided an opportunity for participants to understand the leadership opportunities and challenges that were the backdrop to these success stories. Examples included Aspire Middle School, the Thurston County Food Bank and Wolf Haven International. Participants also conducted individual interviews with community leaders to explore their vision and approach to leadership. Summaries of these interviews were shared with the class. Recruitment for the Class of 2013 was the most successful since LTC began. The class was full by May 15, and, with 34 people, it is the largest in program history. The program continues to ensure that the class represents a wide range of demographics and is well balanced among business, government and nonprofit sectors Distinguished Leader Awards Over 300 people attended the 12th annual Distinguished Leader Awards held February 15, 2012, at Saint Martin s University. The sold-out event recognized community leaders who demonstrate exceptional leadership and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the founding of LTC. Michael Cade, the Executive Director of the Thurston Economic Development Council, and the Rotary Club of Olympia were honored for their outstanding achievements. Looking Ahead Leadership Thurston County is strong. Thanks to the ongoing generous investment by board members and community volunteers, the program is continuing to provide a rich mix of information, experiences and connections to grow future community leaders. Graduates are doing important work within their organizations and throughout the community, and LTC is viewed as a resource for referrals for boards, commissions, and other leadership opportunities. We extend special thanks to all our partners who are making an investment in developing future leaders to serve our community. Contributions comprise about 32 percent of the annual budget.
