5 From the Co-Editor Dear Colleagues, We are living in a time of chaos - the curious incident of BREXIT, which is a major setback on globalization, and the unbelievable 'Causeway Bay Book Shop' incident, which has a major impact on our lives. No matter what changes are ahead of us, we are obliged to concentrate on our very duties as cardiologists in Hong Kong. The 3-yearly Congregation of HKCC was held on 11 June. This, being the 8 th Congregation of HKCC, means that HKCC has been admitting Fellows for nearly a quarter of a century. It is indeed a prestigious title that both locally-trained or overseas cardiologists would like to attain. I still remember the happiness when I was conferred a Fellow of HKCC more than 10 years ago. When talking about our past, Dr. CHAN Chi Kin, William was very kind to share a precious photo of himself - one with his signature mustache - while working as a full-time Intervention Fellow in Boston in William was probably the first bearded cardiologist in Hong Kong. I would like to thank Hong Kong Heart Foundation again. Please refer to the Members Section for more details. H O N G K O N G C O L L E G E O F C A R D I O L O G Y Meanwhile, HKCC Members and Fellows have involved in a lot of local, regional or international academic activities. To name but a few: 24 th Annual Scientific Congress on June, 18 th South China International Congress of Cardiology on 8-10 April, and so on. People always say that now it is the best time to visit Cuba, otherwise you couldn't see Cuba again. Thanks Dr. KO for the cover photograph. You can really see 'no' Starbucks around El Capitolio Nacional. Cheers, Dr. CHENG Cheung Wah, Boron Co-Editor Dr. LEUNG Tat Chi, Godwin Co-Editor 3

23 Community Activities Heart Safe Hong Kong The survival of sudden cardiac arrest in Hong Kong remains low compared with that of other places. Early use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and early bystander Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) may increase the chance of survival in sudden cardiac arrest. However, only a small percentage of Hong Kong population knows CPR/AED. The percentage of bystander CPR is also low. In Hong Kong, most bystanders are unprepared to respond to sudden cardiac arrest. To improve the outcome of sudden cardiac arrest, Hong Kong College of Cardiology is planning a new project named Heart Safe Hong Kong (HSHK) to offer an informed, coordinated, and effective campaign to train students and the public to recognize cardiac arrest, initiate CPR and use AED. H O N G K O N G C O L L E G E O F C A R D I O L O G Y To attract more attention towards our planning project HSHK, a large first-aid lesson will be held on 10 Oct at Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre. It attempts to break a Guinness record The largest First-aid Lesson. Hong Kong St. John Ambulance will be our training organization at the event and will teach basic first aid skills, CPR and the use of AED to approximately 1,800 secondary students together. Sharing from Dr. CHAN Chi Kin, William, Department of Cardiology, United Christian Hospital (Hong Kong Heart Foundation Fellowship 2001/2002) People often say "Time flies" and I only realize its meaning when I am asked to recollect and share my experience during my fellowship training 15 years ago. I was the lucky few who were awarded the Hong Kong Heart Foundation Scholarship in The scholarship enabled me to study and work in one of the most renowned cardiac center in the United States - the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. How renowned? Frankly speaking, it was beyond the imagination of a young doctor who was brought up in a grass root family in Hong Kong and who has never dreamed of being able to study abroad. So it was a very exciting and memorable journey to him both for career development and as life time experience. 38 The journey proved to be far more exciting, stimulating and rewarding than it was anticipated. The hospital was equipped with 5 angio-suites that allowed more than 2500 PCI cases a year. It provided service as a tertiary referral center with the most complicated cases. At that time, 24- hour primary PCI was already the standard of care. The laboratory was also housed with the most advanced devices and equipment. Setting aside these hardware, the most important asset was the people who worked there. I was privileged to be trained under the mentorship of Dr Jeff Popma,

41 Members Section Dr Campbell Rogers, Dr Daniel Simon and the late Dr Donald Baim. It added a little more surprise when I could also attend the grand rounds with the TIMI investigators like Drs Elliot Antman, Marc Pfeffer, Patrick O'Gara to name just a few. The only thing I was disappointed about was not being able to see Professor Eugene Braunwald and so I could only "worship" him by the door of his office. The most valuable and memorable part of the one-year training was that I was actually serving as an interventional fellow having the same clinical duties and working hours as with other local fellows. This was exactly how we could possibly learn the most. As of today, I am glad that I am still in good contact with many of my mentors and fellow colleagues. The one year fellowship training has certainly broadened my horizon in the field of cardiology. I am most thankful to be able to apply my knowledge and skills to benefit our patients and to cultivate our next generation cardiologists. I wish to thank the Hong Kong Heart Foundation and the Hong Kong College of Cardiology for making this "journey" possible and sincerely hope that this program will perpetuate to benefit more. Cover Photograph: El Capitolio Nacional, or National Capitol Building, Havana, Cuba, April 2, 2015 El Capitolio, the National Capitol Building, was the seat of the Congress of Cuba before the revolution in It has since then become the Cuban Academy of Sciences. Construction of the building began in 1926, and took 3 years to complete, at a cost of 17 million pesos, when Gerardo Mercada was President of Cuba. The U.S. firm, Purdy and Henderson was commissioned to design and construct, and a large number of famous French, Italian and Cuban architects joined in the project, notably Raul Otero and Eugenio Piedra. The round dome, or Cupola, was the highest point in Havana before the revolution, and third highest in the world at the time. The centrepiece of the building is the 15 meter tall Statue of the Republic, La Estatua de la Republica, designed and cast in Rome before it was shipped to Cuba. It is covered with 22 carat gold leaf and the whole statue weighs 92 tons. The other important objet d'art is a replica of the 25 carat diamond which marks the Kilometre Zero of Cuba (the centre of Cuba). The original was the legendary diamond that belonged to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and was sold to Cuba by a Turkish merchant. A large number of designer lamps are found inside and outside this stately building, which remains a landmark in Havana even today. It was under major renovation at the time the photo was taken. The building is eye-catching even in the background, while local Cubans are seen sipping coffee in the cafe, and tourists chatting on the narrow street in front. 41
