5 Following the fine tradition of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Community College has been endeavouring to foster the whole-person development of our students, with the aim of making their college life more fulfilling as well as making a difference to their further studies and career development. Our all-out efforts in this important regard are made on a variety of fronts. For example, we encourage our students to participate in local and overseas competitions so that they can identify their strengths, learn from other players and further increase their selfconfidence. Besides, we support our students to provide voluntary work and community services for the needy locally and internationally. Financially, we aspire to offer different forms of scholarships and support funds to our students in recognition of their outstanding performance in academic pursuits and non-academic achievements. FOREWORD All these efforts have borne fruit. Since our inception, we have been witnessing the holistic development of our students in various ways with regard to their achievements, services to the community and scholarships obtained. To share their joy and pride, I would like to invite you to take a few minutes to read this booklet. Section 1 covers the achievements of our students in a wide range of arenas such as academic, cultural performance and sports, to name just a few. Section 2 details the many different kinds of services provided by our students in Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of the world. Section 3 lists the scholarships obtained by our students from various donors to recognise their achievements in different areas, support their studies, and sponsor their participation in voluntary work. Our mission to enhance the whole-person development of our students depends very much upon the inputs of various stakeholders, including but not limited to our industry partners, donors, students and teachers. 6 ACHIEVEMENTS August 2011 Outstanding Performance in Summer Internship Programme SHEK Hei Ting Esther, a student of (Tourism and Recreation Management), worked as summer internship in Wing On Travel in the summer of 2011 and was granted the Outstanding Performance Award by the Company. ACHIEVEMENTS Being one of the four winners among forty summer interns with Wing On Travel, Esther was happily presented a Certificate of Appreciation by Ms Jo Jo Chan, General Manager of Wing On Travel in an Appreciation Ceremony held in August

7 ACHIEVEMENTS MAY 2012 Yau Tsim Mong District Outstanding Student Contest 2011/12 &Yau Tsim Mong District Prominently Improved Student Contest 2011/12 FONG Sze Wing, a student of (Marketing), was selected as one of the recipients of Yau Tsim Mong District Outstanding Student Award 2011/12 offered by the Yau Tsim Mong District Liaison Committee in recognition of her outstanding academic and non-academic performance. Besides, 14 students were granted the Prominently Improved Student Award of Yau Tsim Mong Prominently Improved Student Award Contest 2011/12 by the Yau Tsim Mong District Liaison Committee. They are: LAI Yiu Wing LEE Nim Shan LOONG Tsz Kit LUI Ying Ying PANG Lisa PO Sum Yee QIU Siu Hong SO Wing Hang SUEN Pui Yin TAM Long Yeung TONG Chak Leung WONG Shuk Yu WONG Siu Nam YEUNG Chun Hei (Business Management) (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) (Hospitality Management) (Global Business) (Human Resources Management) (China Business) (Information Systems and Knowledge Management) (Marketing) Higher Diploma in Financial and Investment Planning Higher Diploma in Service Management (Tourism and Recreation Management) August SOJLEHK Scholarship for Sub-degree Program Students of Japanese Language Learning LAI Ngai Sin, a student of Associate in Language & Culture, has won the SOJLEHK Scholarship for Sub-degree Program Students of Japanese Language Learning offered by Society of Japanese Language Education Hong Kong (SOJLEHK) ( 香港日本語教育研究會 ). The purpose of the schoalrship is to encourage local youngsters in learning Japanese language and thus enhancing their understanding of Japan and broadening their world views. Selection of awardees are based on their academic result, co-curricular achievement, referees recommentations and interview performance. 9 10

8 ACHIEVEMENTS AUgUst 2012 Achievements of our graduates at their PolyU studies November 2o11 17th All China University Fencing Championship LAM Sze Man, a 2010 graduate of, is the only graduate of the UGC-funded BA (Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Communication programme awarded with first class honours in 2012! She would like to thank her lecturers at HKCC for their care and support. HO Lai Man Chevy, WONG Kit Man Kitty, YAU Chiu Ting, YEUNG Wing Ho and DU Wing Sze Whimsy who are all alumni of Associate Degree Scheme in Design have received the Best of Show Award at PolyU Design Degrees Annual Show Their masterpieces were exhibited at PolyU between 24 May and 25 June SITO Ka Ki, a student of Associate in Health Studies, represented PolyU to attend the 17th All China University Fencing Championship held in Guangzhou in November 2011 and won the Champion in Women s Sabre (Grade A Individual)

9 ACHIEVEMENTS MArch Inter-University TaEkwondo COMPETITION November 2o11 ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition 2011 The 2012 Inter-University Taekwondo Competition was held on 17 and 18 March The PolyU team including 15 students from HKCC won the Grand Team Champion, Men s Overall Champion and Ladies Overall Champion. More importantly, PolyU is the first university to win the Grand Team Champion for four consecutive years. Over 410 teams of accounting and business sub-degree students from local institutions have participated in the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition The challenge of the year was to bid for a professional service contract from Hong Chi Association to set up a new social enterprise. The proposals were evaluated based on the creativity, feasibility, sustainability, budgeting and the suitability to run under the ability of people with intellectual disabilities. With their hard work, two teams of HKCC students were awarded with the Judges Commendation in the Competition out of a total of over 410 participating teams. Among our 15 students in the PolyU team, four champions, 1 first runner-up and 3 second runner-up medals were won. The champions are WONG Ka Yiu, Year-1 student of Associate in Business (Human Resources Management), and TAM Ching Ha, Year-2 student of, for the titles of Fins Middleweight and Featherweight in the Women s Black Belt group, and LO Hon Cheong, Year-1 student of Associate in Applied Social Sciences and LAI Wang Shing, Year-1 student of (Accounting and Finance), for the titles of Shen Middleweight and Lightweight in the Men s Ribbon group accordingly. 10 ACHIEVEMENTS November 2011 Startup Weekend Hong Kong Competition Dante TSANG Wai Chun, a student of, participated in a competition named Startup Weekend and became the winner of Startup Weekend Hong Kong with his teammates in November The winning team has represented Hong Kong to attend an international conference on emerging technology products in Singapore in February Reflecting on the fascinating experiences gained in the competition, Dante believed that one should work with passion and dare to make dreams come true. April 2012 The HKIAAT Accounting and Business Management Case Competition The HKIAAT Accounting and Business Management Case Competition for Tertiary Institute Group was successfully held on 21 April 2012 with Ocean Park Corporation being the selected company for case study. Participating teams were required to recommend strategies on how to sustain Ocean Park s business growth for the next three years. A total of 315 entries were received, including 22 from HKCC. Other entries came from 16 institutions in Hong Kong and 9 colleges in Mainland China. With their hard work, three HKCC teams were awarded Outstanding Performance Team status, while two other teams from HKCC were admitted into the final round for oral presentation. The team with TSE Yuet Fan (Leader), CHU Ka Ki and MAK Wing Yin won the Second Runner-up while the team with WONG Yuen Ting (Leader), CHU Cheuk Ho, LAM Hiu Tung Nicole and NG Mei Ha was granted the Merit award

11 ACHIEVEMENTS June - September 2012 City Junior Chamber (CJC) Tao Heung Shadow Entrepreneur Programme 2012: Creative Entrepreneur Competition Two teams of HKCC students from the programme have won excellent results in the CJC Tao Heung Shadow Entrepreneur Programme 2012: Creative Entrepreneur Competition ( 城市青年商會創意創業系列 稻香影子企業家虛擬創意創業大賽 ). Participating teams of the event were required to use their creativities to write and present a business proposal on how to start-up a business with limited budget of HKD500,000. Among the twenty-two entries, seven teams were invited to join the final presentations on 29 Sept 2012 at IVE Morrison Hill Campus. Two HKCC teams named Keys and Star were selected for the final round of oral presentation with Q&A session by panel judges. With their hard work, good team effort and creativity, the Keys team with HO Kai Wing (Leader), CHENG Hiu Yan, HUNG Yam Ming, and TAM Kiu Fai Kevin, students of (Marketing), won the Champion while the Star team with CHENG Ka Yi (Leader), CHEUNG Ho Sing, HUANG Chun Pang, LEE Ka Wing and MAN Ki Yan, students of Associate in Business (Accounting and Finance), won the 1st runner-up Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme 2011/12 Five of our students have been appointed as the 2011/12 Hong Kong Young Ambassadors after successfully completed the training programme. They have contributed outstanding record of service hours for the year and were awarded as follows: Gold Metal: LAU Pui Lam WONG Sum Yi Silver Metal: NG Lok Yee SO Ka Chun TANG Yik Hei [} [] [] [] [] The Scheme which is jointly organized by the Tourism Commission and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups aims to help young people to inculcate their sense of belonging, increase their understanding of the rich culture of Hong Kong and provide them with a wide range of service opportunities to promote hospitable culture and contribution to our tourism development

12 ACHIEVEMENTS March - December 2012 Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival 2012 July 2012 Hong Kong Student China s National Situation Knowledge Contest Two design students MAK Tsz Chiu and LUI Mei Fung have been granted a production subsidy of HK$40,000 from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council to participate in the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival Representing HKCC, they have produced a short film namely A Time to be Born. A Time to Die 有時 to compete in the Student Division Competition of the Festival organized to promote the development of short film creations in Hong Kong. CHEUNG Yu Yin, a year-two student of Associate of Arts, has won the second runner-up in the individual category (University group) of the Hong Kong Student China s National Situation Knowledge Contest jointly organised by the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Ministry of Education, Education Bureau of HKSAR and Wen Wei Po Daily News. The Contest aimed to enhance student s interest in the learning of China s national situations, strengthen their understanding of and affection for China
