2 Association of Hong Kong Operating Room Nurses Certificate Course in Peri-operative Nursing ( Class 14) Aim of the Course To train nurses of the Association currently working in the operating theatre for achieving a high quality and specialised patient care. To develop theatre nurse to be more competent in their roles and responsibilities. Target Participants Nurses currently working in Operating Rooms or Sterile Supply Service, and who are active members of the Association of Hong Kong Operating Room Nurses. Schedule of the Course 1. Lectures: Nine lecture sessions of 2 hours each at 6:30 8:30 pm on Monday are: Examination & Course Evaluation: Fee HK $ 2,000. Size of Class Venue Around 60 participants G08, Lecture Theatre, School of General Nursing Queen Elizabeth Hospital Course Coordinator Language Medium Ms. Christina Ma, Mr. Barry Lo & Ms. Maria Chan Suk Ming Academic Convenors, Association of Hong Kong Operating Room Nurses Both English and Cantonese will be used. Examination will be conducted in English 1

3 Course Contents 1. Concepts of Peri-operative nursing / Organization of the OR Team 2. Counting of accountable items 3. Draping, gowning and gloving 4. Principles of aseptic technique. 5. Documentation in OR 6. Handling of specimens 7. Sterilization and disinfection in OR 8. Care and handling of basic surgical and powered instruments 9. Surgical Suturing and staplers 10. Intubation equipment and procedure & intraoperative physiological monitoring 11. Care and handling of energy modality equipment 12. Introduction to Minimal invasive surgery 13. Infection control in the O.R 14. Surgical positioning 15. Handling Crisis in OR 16. Safety and Quality Improvement in OR 17. Introduction to Anaesthesia 18. Recovery Room Nursing Award of Certificate/ CNE 1. Achievement certificate will be awarded to those with attendance not less than 7 sessions (excluding examination session), and passing score of 60% in a written examination. 2. Attendance certificate will be issued to participants achieving not less than 7 (excluding examination session) sessions of class attendance but failed in the written examination. 3. Two CNE permits from Hong Kong Nursing Council will be awarded to participants who attended each session. Maximum 18 CNE points will be awarded in this programme. Remarks: 1. No class will be held on public holidays and when typhoon signal No. 8 or above, or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted before the commencement of the class. 2. Class will be held as usual only if the typhoon signal No. 8 or above, or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is lowered before 15:00 hours on that day. 3. Receipt and certificate will be distributed in due time. There will be charge for repeated issues. 2
