BEDFORD ROTARY CLUB BEDFORD CELEBRATES 90 YEARS!!! Our Club s 90th anniversary took place on September 26, and we celebrated with a gala evening. It was a time to look back with pride on the many contributions Bedford Rotary Club has made to our community and world nations since President Leah Pepple opened the program and thanked those in attendance who helped us celebrate. Our Secretary, Gary Shaffer, highlighted Club activities and contributions over the years, and District Governor Drukker described the ever changing environments and cultures encountered during that same period. Guest speaker Carl Hill spoke about fond memories of his Rotary journey as a member of several Rotary clubs and his service as District Governor while a member of our club. County Commissioner and Club member Josh Lang read a Board proclamation establishing September 26, 2016 as Bedford Rotary Club day. Our sister club, Bedford Sunrise, helped us celebrate as did two exchange students from both clubs. President Pepple closed the evening affair encouraging us to seek out a young generation of new members to establish an impactful link to the future. Who knows what thoughts or ideas the new ones will bring along with them? Special Guest Speaker was PDG Carl Hill CHAMBERSBURG ROTARY CLUB Chambersburg Rotary Club partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to conduct a Duck Derby in conjunction with Chambersburg s annual Oktoberfest. Duck calls echoed through the misty day along with duck hats, duck balloons and 2,000 plastic ducks quickly making their way down the Falling Spring race way, recently freshened by some needed fall rain. The two organizations had been selling duck tickets and soliciting sponsors for the past two months. Tickets were $5 each or $25 for a Quack Pack of six tickets. The results netted each of the partners $6500. The Rotary share goes directly to support the clubs scholarship program for local graduating high school seniors. The most prolific seller of duck tickets was club secretary Sue McMurtray, who demonstrated great leadership by selling a total of 281 tickets! She set a very high standard for the rest of the club. Mark your calendar now for the first Saturday of October (10/7/2017) for a fun day in Chambersburg.

PENN STATE TAILGATE PARTY WITH: Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap, and the Sunrise, Downtown and Evening Clubs of State College Soggy weather couldn t dampen the spirits of the Centre County Rotarians who turned out in force to cheer on the Nittany Lions at the local Clubs third annual Penn State tailgate this month. Over 75 Rotarians representing five Clubs (Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap, and the Sunrise, Downtown, and Evening Clubs of State College), along with students from the Penn State chapter of Rotaract, gathered in the spirit of goodwill and better friendships for Penn State s October 1 clash with the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. Conditions were dreary, but dispositions were bright, especially after the game, an exciting overtime victory for the home team.

COUDERSPORT ROTARY CLUB ROTARY CLUB OF HANCOCK Every year Coudersport Rotary Club sponsors the annual Halloween Parade with Tag Day. This year many Coudersport Sixth Grade students participated and made today very successful. Rotary donates part of the proceeds to the Sixth Grade class trip. In addition, money donated supports the annual Halloween Parade. There will be prizes for various categories of costumes, and refreshments provided for all in attendance at the parade which will be held on Saturday, October 29, Thank you to the Rotary members who helped with the event and a special thank you to the Coudersport Sixth Grade students for a terrific job! Coudersport Sixth Grade Students Rotarian Bob Kuhl Tag Day Committee at rear of picture. If it were not for the Micah s Backpack Project, many youth, who rely on meals served during the school day, would go hungry over the weekend. Micah s Backpack, which was developed to meet the needs of such students, sends home a variety of food items in individual servings every Friday. The Hancock Rotary Club recently donated 150 cans of pasta to support the Micah s Backpack Project at Hancock Elementary. Melinda Golden, a Hancock Rotarian said, Our members wanted to ensure that children wouldn t go hungry over the weekend and we also hoped to inspire other civic groups, churches and individual to support this incredibly important and necessary program. Micah s Backpack differs from most food drives in that it seeks to collect specific categories of food designed to appeal to young children and to meet their nutritional needs. According to Ms. Golden, Juice boxes and individual servings of cereal, fruit, soup and macaroni and cheese are always appreciated. 7 SHEPHERDSTOWN ROTARY CLUB & CHARLES TOWN ROTARY CLUB As they have done for many years, the Shepherdstown and Charles Town Rotary Clubs have teamed up to provide free dictionaries and thesauruses to students in Jefferson County schools. The two clubs buy the books with Rotary funds, and club members volunteer their time to distribute them. They give dictionaries to all the third graders in the schools and thesauruses to all the fifth graders. This year, they distributed a total of 701 dictionaries and 680 thesauruses during visits to schools between September 28 and October 4. The Shepherdstown Club handles distributions to the schools in the northern part of the county: C.W. Shipley, Driswood, North Jefferson, Shepherdstown, and T.A. Lowery elementary schools. The Charles Town Club handles distribution to the remaining four schools: Blue Ridge, Ranson and South Jefferson Elementary and Wright Denny Intermediate. Promoting literacy has always been a major Rotary priority, and the organization sees the distribution of dictionaries and thesauruses as an important part of that effort. The goal is to help students become good writers and readers, so they can develop good communications skills that will serve them well no matter what vocation or profession they follow when they become adults. Students in Ms. Griffith s 3rd grade North Jefferson Elementary classroom holding the dictionaries they just received from members of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club. EMPORIUM ROTARY CLUB Senator Joseph Scanati, third from the left, recently took some time out from campaigning to speak at the Emporium Rotary luncheon. The project was done surrounding the Scoreboard which was funded by the Sheetz Corporation. The beautiful stone was installed by St. Marys Monuments, and the landscaping was done by West Creek Nursery. ROTARY CLUB OF MONTOURSVILLE The Montoursville Rotary Club participated in the Kiwanis Montoursville Fall Festival September 23 rd & 24th at Indian Park, Montoursville. This weekend event is a community event proving musical entertainment, food, games, and ending in a fabulous fire-works display on Saturday night for the entire community to enjoy. All vendors participating in the even are not-for-profit organizations and clubs, allowing a unique way for all to serve the community and do a little fun-raising as well! The Montoursville Rotary set up a Hole -In-One golf game with a prize for every child that played and a cash award for any lucky hole-in-one winners! The club was able to raise almost $500 at this event. We even had a local celebrity stop by to try to win at the Hole-In-One game ~ Williamsport Cross Cutter s Boomer!!

ROTARY CLUB OF RIDGWAY The Second Harvest Food Bank out of Erie, PA, provided fresh food to about 80 area families. Rev. Roger Peterson, coordinator, received volunteer help from members of the Ridgway Rotary, St. Leo's church and That Man Is You men's group, the YMCA, Trinity UMC members, Arc Metals employees, the Salvation Army, and Grace Episcopal church. Second Harvest project provides fresh, healthy produce to enable low income clients to eat healthier and make better food choices. To enable future distributions individuals and/or organizations are needed to help with distribution and funding for the cost of delivering the food to Ridgway from the distribution center in Erie. Those willing to help should contact Rev. Roger Peterson at Pictured L to R are: Steve Shick, Dan Merritt, Evelyn Johnson, Gennaro Aiello, Debbie Richards, Charlie Richards, Lt. Here are pictures of the second graders enjoying apple dumplings made from the recipe in the book. Pictured is Rotarian Pam Diiulio with Joyce DeVallance, owner of The Sugarcane Floral and Gift Shop, on Center Street in Johnsonburg. Joyce told Rotarians about opening The Sugarcane, a dream of her son Michael s, and how the business has grown over the years. She proudly told the group that she had just finished her 23 rd wedding this year. The Sugarcane offers a range of jewelry, candles and gift items along with being a full service florist. She is willing to work with special requests from customers.

ROTARY CLUB OF GALETON NEWS FROM OUR DGN DAN BENNETT October was a month of change for the Galeton Rotary Club. We were forced to move from the Ox-Yoke Inn after many years of meeting there. After a thorough search we will now meet at the Permastone Inn. The town and the club regret the closing of the Ox-Yoke Inn. Principal, Clyde Pierce shared the results of the state required standardized testing as his program this month. The format has changed since last year and generally scores are lower this year. Galeton's overall score was better than all but one local school. John Zeigler had a discussion of the menu at our new meeting place. A committee of members met with the Permastone staff to discuss the issues that need to be changed. We have, as a club, never had to ask for less food before. We had a most successful spouse's night Greetings, Rotarians Did you hear the one about the guy who missed a great celebration...??? Me neither. But there is a celebration on November 19th that you don t want to miss. The celebration of 100 years of doing good in the world. Come celebrate the soon-to-be eradication of polio from the WORLD!
