4 PRESIDENT S REPORT Richard Gilham Another year has passed and coming to a close in my journey with Rotary. I hope what I have learnt as the President of the Rotary Club of Croydon will be an asset in my future path through life. It has been an amazing ride and the support by the members has been unbelievable. Until you have been there you will just not understand. We started the year with the launch of the Big Red Kidney Bus Project. The objective of the BRKB project was the renovation and modification of a standard bus into a stand-alone mobile renal dialysis unit able to dialyse up to 3 people at any one time. The modifications required were needed to best utilise the limited space available within the bus to house all equipment and necessities in a safe and secure manner. Trying to raise the target of $150,000 for the refurbishment of the Bus seemed so distant. However with the skills of the Rotary Team in fundraising, our objective was achieved. The Coach which was donated by the Bus Industry is on its way for refurbishment. The Big Red Kidney Bus was just one of the projects that were completed or are still under way. The Rotary Club of Croydon has supported numerous projects for the year in all avenues of service. Some examples are: YOUTH Rotary Youth Exchange Program Inbound One student from South Korea and One from Brazil Rotary Youth Exchange Program Outbound One student to France and One to Taiwan Rotary Four way speech contest Rotary Primary Schools Public Speech Contest Rotary Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges Rotary Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) Two Participants Beacon Foundation Mock interview support RYLA One participant INTERNATIONAL The Rotary Club of Croydon is actively involved at an international level and communicates with numerous overseas Rotary Districts and Clubs. Malaysia Autistic GG Project to train the trainers as well as carers in early intervention methodology and to set in place sustainable system to address autism in Malaysia. VOCATIONAL After a lull of a couple of years, the Rotary Club of Croydon had a special Vocational Awards Day with the support of the District Vocational Service Chair and made the following recognitions: RC Croydon Apprentice of the Year Award RC Croydon Vocational Excellence Award - Emergency Services RC Croydon Secondary Student Citizenship Award Service above Expectation Awards (For Commercial Establishments) COMMUNITY The Rotary Club of Croydon has over thirty projects that have either been completed or are ongoing for the year. 6 Ruskin Park Primary School Knitting Project by member s partners Rotary Ride for Research Support Safe Futures Foundation Domestic Violence Safe T Cards Garden Support Equipment Support Welcome Packs Conference Attendance Treasured Babies - Grief Support Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring Program It certainly has been a great year for the Rotary Club of Croydon. RECOGNITIONS On the night of the 25 th of June at the District 9810 Changeover Dinner, the Rotary Club of Croydon was awarded a Presidential Citation Gold for helping Rotary, make a difference in the lives of people all over the world. The Club also received District Recognitions for Club Building, Club Projects, Club PR and Communications and Outstanding Rotary Club. We have been led to believe that there were only two gold Citations given out in the whole of Australia. Combine the Citation and the District Recognitions we believe that the Rotary Club of Croydon is possibly the number one Rotary Club in Australia. ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR. This year it was extremely difficult to work out who was the most constructive member in their pursuit of excellence as a Rotarian. Finally a decision was made to present the award to two members. They are: Rotarian John Hexter and Rotarian Jean Stuart. Their efforts in the execution of their duties for the year were tremendous and much appreciated. Rotary Club of Croydon Annual Report Page 4

9 SECRETARY S REPORT Joy Varughese (Dr) Rotary Year started on 1 st July 2015 with the membership being 35. The club admitted 9 members during the year. Hence the membership as on 30th June 2016 is 44 in number. Physical attendance at regular meetings of the club averaged 50 percent but with make-ups the average club attendance for the year stands at 66 percent. Eight (8) members had the distinction of achieving 100 percent attendance. The Honorary Members of the club as at 30 th June 2016 are 12 in number. I wish to record our sense of loss at the demise of our Hon. Member, PP Fred Griffiths during the year. I congratulate President Richard Gilham for having sponsored 5 new members, Brian McDaid 2 new members, PP David Ferres and Ross Taylor 1 new member each. It pleases me also to congratulate President Richard Gilham on successfully completing his Presidency and the Board of Directors for a very successful year of service to the club. I wish Incoming President and his Board of Directors a successful year in office. I wish to thank President Richard for having requested me to continue serving as Secretary for a second year. 14 MEMBERSHIP REPORT Richard Gilham The Membership plan this year was to focus on the needs of prospective members more so than the needs for Rotary. Most people look to find out what the prospective members can give or do for Rotary. By finding out the wants and the wishes of the prospective member and what they want to achieve by being a member of Rotary makes it all so much easier to recruit new members. Showing the prospective member the benefits of Rotary membership and how by active involvement in Rotary activities the prospective member can achieve their own personal goals is of paramount importance. This year the Rotary Club of Croydon membership has gained from 35 members on the 1 st of July 2015 to 44 members on the 30 th of April 2016, a net gain of 9 members or 29%. We give mentoring some serious consideration when choosing the right mentor for the new members. After due consideration and working out the aims, ambitions and skills of the new member we match them up with a member with similar traits and personality. Someone with the skill set to become a President is teamed up with our most qualified member. Rotary Club of Croydon Annual Report Page 12

Chris Lavery Club Program Report - Rotary Year It has been both a pleasure and a privilege to prepare the Program for our weekly meetings for the Rotary Year Efforts have been made to make the speakers as interesting as possible whilst keeping in mind the aims and goals of our Club. My thanks to all those who contributed suggestions and comments towards the Program during the year. Suggesting speakers or activities is one way you, the members, can influence the content of the Program and the speakers. Congratulations President Richard on a very successful and interesting year. It has been great to work with you in putting the Program together. 18 2016 DISTRICT CONFERENCE REPORT Stephen Bode The annual District 9810 Conference was held in Shepparton this year with 10 people representing the Rotary Club of Croydon. Six members, one partner and two Exchange Students attended (Roger Paul, Stephen and Ruth Bode, Brian McDaid, Richard Gilham, David Ferres, Jeanine Jones (first time attendee), Hwan You (South Korea) and Julia Heringer- (Brazil). District Conference provides a great opportunity to refresh your outlook about Rotary, find out about projects in other Clubs, meet similar minded Rotarians and hear inspirational and entertaining speakers on a wide range of topics The conference was opened on the Friday afternoon by District Governor David Tolstrup with the theme Power of the Past, Force of the Future. Speakers during the afternoon included the RI President s Representative Margaret Reeve from New Zealand. RI President Nominee, Ian Riseley (from D9810) also attended the conference. Accommodation was at a local caravan park which also included members of the Rotary Club of Lilydale and Upper Yarra. Friday night Club Dinner was at the Shepparton RSL and members of these clubs including Boronia were present. Following the dinner, there was a great opportunity for Croydon members to socialise and get to know each other. Richard and Brian manned a stand at the Rotary Expo to promote The Big Red Kidney Bus Project and encourage further support. The theme of the Saturday night dinner was: Your Favourite TV Show. It gave us an opportunity to dine and dance and showcase our 3rd prize winning costume with Samurai and Ninja costumes fashioned by Ruth Bode. Both Hwan and Julia enjoyed dressing up and really got into the roles and making sure our Club was noticed. A presentation was made to the Club regarding the speakers and conference proceedings. The 2017 Conference will be held in Geelong from 31 March to 2 April PR COMMUNICATIONS REPORT Jean Stuart Rotary Club of Croydon Annual Report Page 16

19 The Chronicle (bulletin) the weekly newsletter produced by the Rotary Club of Croydon has grown in content over the last twelve months. Local, national and international content has filled it s pages and the Chronicle has become a must read here in the environs of Croydon, nationally and internationally. The Chronicle is delivered to a few as a hard copy and is directly ed out to over 180 recipients. The Chronicle is made available on our Facebook Page and our website link. Our web site link to the Chronicle allows the general public to keep up with RC Croydon. The Chronicle has become a major record of our past events. The Facebook page of the Rotary Club of Croydon has developed an extensive following nationally and internationally from a humble 70 odd page likes to 500. Currently the Rotary message via Croydon s Facebook page is spreading the word. Sri Lanka, Kenya, UK, USA, are well represented amongst the followers of the RC Croydon Facebook Page. Facebook can have a story up in a very short time and gets the message out almost instantly. The RC Croydon s website has grown extensively and is widely perused. The website is the foundation of the Club. It comes in two parts, one for the public and a password protected area for members use only. Sensitive information is posted in the password protected area. The website is updated weekly and has a link for the current edition of the Chronicle and other news. Marketing of our major project for the year, the Big Red Kidney Bus Project to provide Holiday Dialysis, has gone hand in hand since the launch of the Project in July The project has been marketed in the media extensively. This has resulted in significant fundraising which is continuing at a local, national and international level in Malaysia and Brazil. Australia All Over from Macca ABC Radio Rotary Down Under Magazine Kidney Health Australia publications and Editorials Leader Group Truck and Bus magazines Promotion of two Concerts in aid the BRKB Full page editorials through Ray White Real Estate Flyer. Plus much more. During the year we have had editorials in the local Leader Newspaper and in the What s On section a number of times with our concert, the golf day and the trivia night. Editorial in the Leader about our endeavour to raise funds for the Croydon Special Developmental School was encouraging. Editorial on the BRKB in the leader proved excellent results. Our efforts with the local FM station 98.1 Eastern FM gave us extensive penetration in our area of influence for the various events during for the year. 20 COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT Stephen Bode Committee Members: Clive Baum, Stephen Bode, Lindsay Hurford, Michael Jackomos, Jeanine Jones, Chris Lavery, Edwina Ricci, Bev Stehn, John Van Holsteyn. The Rotary Club of Croydon has continued to expand it s activities for the benefit of the local and broader community in Thanks to all members of the club for their generous support with this year s projects. You should be very proud individually and collectively for what was achieved. The Club s major focus was the Big Red Kidney Bus project which is the subject of a specific individual report. The other Community projects for are listed below: ANZAC day service (assisting Rotary Club of Ringwood) Our Club covered the cost of printed material provided to 24 Primary Schools attending the service at Ringwood Lake and Croydon members assisted with marshalling on the day. Thanks to John van Holsteyn for coordinating our marshal contingent. Bowelscan Our Club participated in the Australian Rotary Health Bowelscan project through the efforts of Kevin Francis and Ian Cumming. Kevin and Ian worked through seven local pharmacies to distribute and collect Bowelscan kits. Maroondah Hospital Mental Health Unit Welcome Packs (Toiletries) A special thanks to Michael and Anne Jackomos who prepared hundreds of much appreciated Welcome Packs for the Maroondah Hospital to issue to patients arriving at the Mental Health Unit. Christmas Biscuits Thank you again to Michael and Ann for wrapping and delivering packs of biscuits for distribution on Christmas day to inpatients at the Maroondah Mental Health Unit General Donations We were able to provide to the Mental Health Unit four large heavy duty bean bags which will hopefully assist their consumers in feeling more comfortable and settled. Debra Siddall spoke to the Club about the mental health unit s operations and for their appreciation of the support received. Sensory Garden Development Consultation Responding to a request from the Mental Health Unit to create sensory gardens in both courtyards, Ruth Bode was able to provide initial design advice and direction on alternate funding sources. At the time of installation all available members were busy with the Anzac ceremony. CHAMPS Kids Club Croydon Rotary continued the long relationship by providing funding towards the running of the CHAMPS Kids Club, an 8 week after school peer support program for children of parents with a mental illness. Ruskin Park Primary Knitting Project We provided financial support for materials for the knitting project with Ruskin Park Primary School students. Treasured Babies We continue to support Treasured Babies who work in partnership with Men s Shed Croydon to make boxes for the babies that have passed away and to provide shelving at their new location. The collaboration with Men s Sheds makes our dollar go further and has provided an enhanced meaning and purpose for the work of the Men s Shed, as they loved giving at such an important time in the lives of families. Safe Futures Foundation Safe-T Card The Club covered the cost of providing two Personal Protection SafeT Cards and 12 months monitoring cost valued at $2160. Two individual members jointly funded the cost of half an additional card. Bendigo Bank at Mooroolbark also contributed $2700 to enable 5 cards to be available to protect women from domestic violence. International Conference Participation The Club provided funds for 2 staff of Safe Futures Foundation to attend the 3rd World Conference on Women s Refuges. Brian McDaid was instrumental in arranging a District Grant to fully cover the costs involved. Ray White Little Ray of Giving Working in partnership with Ray White and Melba College to raise the profile of the challenges facing the survivors of family violence and responding to this by buying presents for the children involved. A big thanks to Tamara Lloyd and staff from Ray White Croydon, and to the students and staff at Melba College for their generous donations. Garden Maintenance Project Assistance with garden maintenance of Safe Futures local properties is proposed to commence shortly once required security clearances for all Club participants is obtained and appropriate induction training for volunteers is received. This will involve project days to ensure backyards are child friendly. Seniors Wellbeing Expo (Karralyka) Club volunteers have represented the Club and Rotary generally at Maroondah Council Seniors events. 22 Cooperation with Melba College Our close cooperation with Melba College has benefited and will continue to benefit both parties. Rotary gets access to a free venue, where school provides supper on primary school speech competition nights. Rotary in return assists in interviews for school captains, business events with year 10 students and supports students to attend MUNA. Maroondah Festival We supported the festival again with the presence of volunteer members in a booth at Town Park. This community event in November is an opportunity for public relations, marketing and increasing membership. Victorian Police Mentoring Project Croydon Rotary was the only Club in District 9810 to participate in the Victorian Police Leaders Mentoring Program. Mentors Stephen Bode, John van Holsteyn and Ross Taylor were appointed from the Club to assist mentee Graham Guy from Ringwood Police station to get a good understanding of community engagement and to get involved in a useful project in this regard. The mentee s needs were for an exposure to broader community engagement outside the normal work and an understanding of different leadership styles. The mentor s commitments were regular meetings with the mentee plus attending training and official functions at the beginning and at the end. Graham Guy attended Club meetings and facilitated the development of a program to work with adolescents to help break the cycle of family violence. The proposed program is in partnership with Eastern Access Community Health (EACH). The program was presented at a Club meeting with District representatives. Speakers were from Victoria Police, EACH and included a client who has benefited from aspects of a similar program. Consideration is being given as to how Rotary can provide further support. 23 THE BIG RED KIDNEY BUS PROJECT The Major Project of the Rotary Club of Croydon this year is the Big Red Kidney Bus. KHA Big Red Kidney Bus The objective of the BRKB project was the renovation and modification of a standard bus into a standalone mobile renal dialysis unit able to dialyse up to 3 people at any one time. The modifications required were needed to best utilise the limited space available within the bus to house all equipment and necessities in a safe and secure manner. A bus, dialysis chairs and some equipment were donated, and the bus is being remodelled to meet minimum hospital standards of a satellite dialysis unit. In a consumer perspective publication in 2011, 967 respondents on dialysis indicated they had tried to take a holiday but had been unable to do so, the most common reason was that it was too difficult to organise dialysis at the holiday location or that dialysis was not available. This project has been a consumer instigated and driven initiative (in partnership with Kidney Health Australia) catering for a demand by those on dialysis to lead a more normal life which includes holidays without being geographically restricted. Founded in 1968, Kidney Health Australia is a not for profit organization whose focus is to promote good kidney health through education, advocacy, research and support. The project when finished will directly benefit people on life saving haemodialysis and their immediate families. Based on average family of 2 adults and 1 child with 12 patients per week the ongoing beneficiaries per week is in the vicinity of 36, plus education of local schools and communities, and the assistance which could be afforded to our indigenous community where less travel would be needed for dialysis purposes the estimated direct beneficiaries is in the vicinity of 4,000 per annum. In some cases where a disaster such as bush fires or major flooding occours, the Dialysis Bus will be diverted to assist where normal dialysis treatment is interrupted. With no kidney function, death occurs within days, and other than a transplant, dialysis is the only treatment option, it generally takes 5 hours a day, and is required three times a week. Kidney Health Australia provides Community Education in all of the Big Red Kidney Bus holiday locations. Baseline education informs the general public about kidney health and link kidney health, blood pressure, heart health, stroke and diabetes. This program is important in helping communities make informed healthy lifestyle choices. The program aims to prevent these chronic diseases with health promotion and early detection. Age appropriate Kidney Health Education will also be directed to local community schools. Rotary Club of Croydon Annual Report Page 21

24 Funding A total of AU$150,000 was required to refurbish the bus and make it ready for the purpose. Donations of the Bus, Dialysis machines, chairs, a wheel-chair ramp, stabilisers and televisions and video players are all part of the project. The cash cost of the project will include fitting of these donated items. The Project has attracted a Rotary International Global Grant which has enabled contributions to be matched 50c in the dollar. The Grant from Rotary International has assisted in funding the project and has lead the way and the final tally of the funding has been comprised of Rotary Clubs Australia $36,000, Rotary Clubs Overseas $27,000, Rotary International World Fund $57,000 and Corporate/Philanthropic funds $30,000. 25 YOUTH SERVICE REPORT Committee: Roger Paul Chair Jill Fletcher Jesse Johnson Craig Mentiplay Marlene Sinclair Youth Exchange In a break with tradition, we hosted two exchange students this year. Julia Heringer from Brazil and Hwan You from South Korea. Funding from the South Korean government offset much of the expense incurred by the club in hosting Hwan. Both Julia and Hwan have enjoyed their stay with us and have said that it was a life changing experience. Finding suitable host families is a constant challenge for those involved in the organisation of the Youth Exchange program. Julia stayed with the families of two former outgoing exchange students who were not members of Rotary but who perhaps should be. The Membership committee could canvas these and other parents of former exchange students and perhaps invite them to join the club. The committee thanks Ian Cumming, Rowan and Amanda Cole, Penny Mentiplay, Eric and Beverley Thomas and Roger and Di Paul for acting as host parents for Hwan and Julia. During the year, Hwan and Julia took part in the Ride to Conference, attended the District Conference, travelled 900 Km on the Reef to Rock tour, enjoyed the Rotary four wheel drive trip to the Dargo High Plains and assisted with club activities. MUNA The club sponsored students from Melba College who took part in MUNA. The purpose of MUNA is to encourage young people to learn about other nations and to understand and appreciate the workings of the United Nations while they develop debating skills and gain self confidence in public speaking. The resolutions to be debated are based on some that have been debated by the UN as well as some proposed by the teams. RYLA The club has sponsored Sarah Jacobs who will attend the RYLA seminar from next Monday. The purpose of RYLA is to deliver an intensive six-day training program for young people aged 18 to 30 nominated by their local Rotary Club for their community youth leadership potential. 28 ROTARY FOUNDATION Brian McDaid The Rotary Foundation is Rotary International s charity of choice. It incorporates such areas as Polio Eradication, Global Grants, Centurion Club, Vocational Training Teams, Group Study Exchange, Paul Harris Society and Rotary Scholarships. This year we maintained our excellent record of $100 per member per year. We also maintained 6 members of the Centurion Club which is a personal donation to The Rotary Foundation of $100. We also contributed US $500 towards the Polio Eradication Fund. This amount was matched by our District We were the recipient of a District Grant of $4,000 to match our $4,000 contribution towards the sponsorship of two staff from Safe Futures Foundation to attend the 3 rd World Conference of Women s Shelters in The Hague. Safe Futures Foundation presented two papers to the conference and obtained invaluable information on up to date practices from around the world. We were also successful in our application for a Global Grant for the Big Red Kidney Bus. Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotary s areas of focus. Grant sponsors form international partnerships that respond to real community needs. The minimum budget for a global grant activity is $30,000. The Foundation s World Fund provides a minimum of $15,000 and maximum of $200,000. Clubs and districts contribute District Designated Funds (DDF) and/or cash contributions that the World Fund matches. DDF is matched at 100% and cash is matched at 50%. We were able to obtain DDF of $13,500 from D4470 in Brazil, $13,500 from D9810 and $11,700 from D3300 in Malaysia (our International Partner). These contributions were matched by the World Fund to the tune of $38,700. The rest of the funds were from Rotary Club of Doncaster $10,000, Rotary Club of Subang (D3300) $1,350 and Rotary Club of Croydon through fundraising and philanthropic contributions totaling $38,500. These funds were matched by $24,890 from the World Fund. The result being that from a total project cost of $152,100, The Rotary Foundation directly and indirectly contributed $102,313. 29 SPECIAL PROJECTS Brian McDaid The Special Projects of the Rotary Club of Croydon still make a considerable contribution to the less fortunate in our neighbouring countries and beyond. We continue to assist in supplying medical equipment through the DAK Foundation. A portable ultrasound machine was sent to the Rotary Club of Ivinhema in Brazil to assist the Ivinhema Municipal Hospital, provide ultrasound facilities to the local community who do not have the funds or the means of transport to travel to the nearest hospital for scans. The assistance to Philanthropic Foundations through RC of Croydon and Rotary Australia World Community Service continues with many projects being supported. The RC of Croydon would like to acknowledge the assistance given to Rotary projects through grants from these Foundations. Rotary Club of Croydon Annual Report Page 27

In line with support for the Rotary District s focus on creating awareness in the community about the seriousness of domestic violence, our Club agreed to financially support the attendance of two Safe Futures personnel invited to participate and make a presentation at the Third World Conference of Women s Shelters in The Hague. With our proposed financial support, UYM organised a team to attend the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Samoa. They were able to self- fund this exercise and hence our allocation was not utilized. John Gander and David Ferres attended the RAWCS Southern Region AGM at Traralgon. They were very impressed by the keynote speaker, Dr. Jack Richards, who spoke on worldwide malaria control. This speaker will also be addressing the RAM Conference 2016 on 20/21 August at Tullamarine. Our Club provided a donation to the Fiji Disaster Appeal Fund of the District. On World Malaria Day, 30 th April 2016, our Club joined with Rotary Club of Ringwood to put on a Community Awareness Display on the ravages caused by malaria worldwide. This was in support of an initiative of the District. The event was a success with main focus on showing the public how effective insecticidal bed-nets are in reducing infant mortality through malaria. Funds raised from the public totalled $760 which allows for 76 more families being able to protect their children against malaria. Our club also made a monetary donation to this District programme. The AKCO school project in Kenya needed a further $9,000 to complete the project which we were committed to. This was primarily due to delays in completion causing inflation in the budget. Due to the shortfall in philanthropic funds available to us, the club board agreed to provide the balance of $4,500 from the International Service budget, after reviewing the pending programmes. Non-financial Club sponsorship was requested and given for a DIK container bound for Fiji, the purpose being to fill it with materials needed for Tsunami victims in Fiji. Based on a reciprocal agreement between our Club and the Rotary Club of Ivinhema in District 4470 Brazil, the club supplied a DAK Foundation-donated unit of a portable ultrasound machine to Ivinhema Municipal Hospital. In return we received from District D4470 Brazil, a District Grant of $13,500 to assist in the overseas commitment to the Big Red Kidney Bus. Rotary Club of Croydon Annual Report Page 28

31 FUNDRAISING REPORT Brian McDaid With the Big Red Kidney Bus as the main focus there were some innovative ideas as far as fundraising was concerned. Some of the fundraising highlights were Christmas Raffle, Golf Day, Movie nights, Concerts, Sergeant s sessions, Raffles, Bicycle Counts, Pegasus BBQ, Book Sales and wine sales. A great effort by all Members, partners and friends who made a super human effort in achieving a great result, whilst still managing to fund our normal projects locally and, to a lesser degree, overseas. Thanks must go to the members and partners who championed some of these fundraisers. There were a number of direct donations for the Big Red Kidney Bus from friends of Rotary as well as donations in the buckets at the doors of our concerts and movie nights. We thank those individuals who supported our fundraising by attending our functions, donating in lieu, or both. A lot of fellowship was had during these activities and involvement with our local community. All figures are available in the Treasurer s Report. GOLF DAY REPORT Tony Wright Annual Charity Golf Day 10 March 2016 All those who participated in the Club's Annual Charity Golf Day thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I thank all the sponsors, donors and players for their generosity in what is one of the Club's major charity fundraising events. BOOK SALES REPORT David Ferres The cookery books donated by a well-wisher to the club, for fundraising, have been sold. With the help of other Rotarians, David Ferres undertook this huge sales task over the period October 2015 to May 2016 to raise funds for the club s project. While the receipt of these books was considered a great fundraising opportunity, the sale of the books proved to be very difficult. 33 ROTARY RIDE FOR RESEARCH 2016 David Ferres The ride this year was named MILLION $$$ MILESTONE RIDE as we envisaged passing the One Million Dollar Sponsorship Total during the ride. This amazing milestone was, in fact, achieved. The ride spanned 14 March 2016 to 19 March 2016 arriving at the annual District Conference at Shepparton at approximately 10.15am on Saturday March 19 th. The chosen Route included starting at Mansfield on Monday riding through Benalla, Wangaratta, Mulwala, Moama, Echuca, and finishing at Shepparton on Saturday. Croydon Rotary Club was represented by David Ferres and our two exchange students, Julia Heringer and Hwan You. They and the whole youth exchange group of 9 to10 at the ride had an absolutely great time. The first two days were a real challenge because it was very hot, strong headwinds, and hilly terrain. Day 3 onwards, with a very good lead driver and a group which was now working together meant riding the greatest distance of all groups. On day 5 from Echuca to Shepparton, the start was an hour late due to a howling gale which at times was a direct headwind. Fortunately the wind eased and nearing Rochester we turned east to enjoy a tailwind. This run home was the best, with me leading, we slowly increased the tempo from 26 kph to 30 kph, at the same time making sure everybody was linked on. It is just so much fun and everyone had a great time. We covered the ride, a distance of approximately 690 km safely with no untoward incidents whatsoever. All exchange students succeeded riding in excess of 100 km in a single day. This year s total will approach $50,000 which meant blasting past the One Million Dollar total target.
