Page Volume 6 Number 4 Ray Garcia Message from DG Bonnie September is ending as one of the rainiest months ever for our region, but the sun is shining in Rotary Land! As I continue with my official visits, I am energized with the Rotarians I meet, the camaraderie that is so evident in every club, and the promise of help for an aching world that we hold in our grasp. Let me introduce you to Ray Garcia, proud member of the Paoli- Malvern-Berwyn Rotary Club. Ray told me about joining Rotary. He had come from the Pentagon, taking a job with Westinghouse in the industrial airport area of Philadelphia. He realized he was looking for something to balance the business side of work: he wanted to serve. A colleague from General Electric invited him to a Rotary meeting. As he entered the room, Ray saw the banner with Rotary s motto Service Above Self." Ray realized he had found his group. Ray has been an active Rotarian, serving his club as president, emphasizing strategic planning. During World War II, Ray served as a pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt in the 57th Fighter Group of the Army Air Corp. The 57th participated in the French campaign against Elba in June, 1944, and in the invasion of southern France in August, then in support operations in northern Italy until May, Ray is pledging to join us at the District Conference , as we honor, on this Day of Remembrance, our men and women of Rotary who have served their country. The Veterans Memorial Celebration (4:45 p.m. 11/11/11) will feature an inspiring video as well as our own opportunity to remember all Rotarians in our district who have passed away these past twelve months. YOU should be with us also! Register at Or get a paper registration from your Rotary Club president. Check out the AMAZ- ING line up of speakers and presenters we have! - Alex s Lemonade Stand : Alex s father Jay Scott will present his daughter s story. Her last months fighting cancer, her wish was to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Her organization has donated $35 Million dollars to research. (CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO) October 2011 Victory for Philadelphia Union and Rotary s Kick Out Polio By Carol Metzker More than 240 Rotarians and guests attended the Philadelphia Union versus Columbus Crew soccer game and a pre-game party hosted by the Rotary Club of Chester September 17. The Kick Out Polio event, a first for District 7450, raised more than $2500 from ticket sales, and donations for purple pinkies (representing immunization against polio), Kick Out Polio wristbands and the privilege to sign soccer balls headed to India and the National Immunization Day in November. It was a first visit for many Rotarians to the PPL Park in Chester and to a major league soccer game. For the Union, the game was a victory over Lila Jane Williams, granddaughter of Ardmore Rotarian Jane Williams, paints purple pinkie at tailgate party before soccer game. the top-ranked team from Columbus, Ohio. For spectators, it was a chance to learn via a jumbotron video at half-time that Rotary is working to End Polio Now. The Kick Out Polio event was the result of a brainstorming and leadership by Kennett Square Rotarian Bronwyn Martin, a founding member of the Union. The Rotary Club of Chester, led by Francy Cross, sponsored the tailgate party. If you re interested in a similar event next year, please contact Ardmore Rotarian Jane Williams, District 7450 Polio Subcommittee chair, at cjwilliams@jpwilliamsco.com.[ Peace Fellow welcomed home The Rotary Club of Philadelphia welcomed home Rotary Peace Fellow, Lieutenant D F Pace of the Philadelphia Police Force, from a three-month study at the Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok at its September 15 meeting. Lieutenant Pace s fellowship was sponsored by Philadelphia Rotary Club and District Lieutenant Pace will be one of the featured speakers at November 11 and 12 District Conference at Desmond Conference Center in Malvern. (More details on page 4)
Page 2 Polio Wake-Up Initiative focuses on the Continent All Rotarians and all Rotary Clubs are encouraged to participate in a special Polio Awareness Initiative. to bring to the forefront the fact that Polio still exists and Rotary is leading the charge in eradicating the dreaded disease in the world. The event will begin on World Polio Day, Monday October 24, and continue throughout the week. Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs in Canada and United States are asked to raise awareness for Polio. Some may encourage their members to get out for a walk on their own and record the activity in number of kms or miles, another Club might organize a marathon or spin-a thon; another might march from the Club meeting to City Hall for a peaceful demonstration. Another may sponsor a Purple Pinkie Project, Pennies for Polio, or other Polio Awareness activity that a Club already practices. Each Rotary Club is invited to participate in its own way and will be given a chance to brag about the activity on a special Facebook Group page ( home.php?sk=group_ ) and be included in a You Tube video to follow. For more information, contact Ardmore Rotarian Jane Williams at cjwilliams@jpwilliamsco.com. Let s Ignite the Flame at District Conference (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) - Power Up Gambia : A local pre-med student spent three weeks volunteering in a hospital in Gambia, a hospital that did not have a consistent power source daily. The hospital could not supply blood, medicines, or even a lifesaving incubator for a preemie. Kathryn Cunningham Hall started her own charitable organization, raised the money to outfit this hospital with solar energy. What a story! - Peace Fellow Lieutenant D F Pace: He recently returned from Rotary s program in Thailand centered on peace and conflict resolution. He will walk us through an exercise that will take a step towards making world peace possible. - The Power of Curiosity and Wonder : Keynote speaker Sharon Parker the best speaker I have ever heard. She will inspire us to explore our daydreams and commit ourselves to service. And so much more entertainment, drummers and Irish dancers, breakout sessions, an opportunity to interact with the Rotary young people. Come meet your Rotary friends, be inspired and motivated to serve the world. Let s Ignite the Flame! 3 Page 3 Widener University Rotaract Club celebrates 20 years of Service above Self in Chester The Widener University Rotaract Club, which was chartered in 1991, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. It is the oldest continuous Rotaract Club in Rotary District Since its inception, Widener Rotaractors have reached out to the homeless, visited the elderly and the ill, and supplied food, clothing and toys to the needy. Rotaract Clubs are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs fostering leadership, high ethical standards in business and international peace through community and international services. One of the first Rotaract community projects was a joint effort with members of the Chester Rotary Club to renovate the infirmary at Camp Sunshine, a camp for underprivileged children. International projects included the establishment of English libraries at the University of Mindanao in the Philippines and the University of Sarajevo. Textbooks valued at $40,000 were collected and shipped to the universities. Recently, the Widener Rotaract Club partnered with a Rotary Club in India to sponsor Feed The Street Children of Kerala project. Widener Rotaractors sold Super Bowl raffle tickets raising $500 which was increased by the Gundaker and Rotary International Foundations to $2000. Last month the Rotaract Club celebrated its 20 th year presenting Service Above Self Awards to Barbara McKinney, Rotaract Club president, and to Donald Thomas vice president for their dedication as club officers for four years. A Service Above Self Award was presented to Martin Turner, Chester High School Rotary Interact Club president. This is the third year that Longwood Rotary Club has supported the trip with both volunteers and financial assistance. Among Rotarians who have traveled to Mississippi to rebuild homes are (from left) Longwood Rotarian and past president Chuck Muhly, Wes Hosking of Williston, Linda Davis of West Chester, and Longwood Rotarian Bob and Janet Curran. The group needs people with expertise in all One of homes Rotarians are working on. trades. However, anyone can volunteer their services and learn new skills while enjoying the camaraderie of the group and the sense of contribution in helping families recover from the impact of the storm.. For additional information about the trip, contact Longwood Rotarian Bob Curran at or curor ranbob@comcast.net. Reflections from three-month Peace Fellowship program (Philadelphia police lieutenant D F Pace has recently returned from the three month Peace Fellowship program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. What follows are his reflections on that experience.) My initial Rotary involvement in Bangkok consisted of attending an all-day welcome conference on Sunday, June 12, 2011 hosted by PDG Dr. Saowalak Rattanavich and other influential Thai Rotarians (Pictured below). As for the Peace Fellowship program, I was extremely impressed with the program as a whole and found it to be of world-class caliber. It was well-organized, wellpresented, and comprehensive. This program was not taken lightly by the presenters nor the organizers and it showed in the quality of the delivery of the program as a whole. The whole program can be characterized as a success in my career and life as far as I am concerned. I also deem it a privilege to have personally met former RI president, the Honorable Bichai Rattakul. In addition to the above, I also participated in the closing graduation program in several ways. I delivered a talk on the challenges faced by the Philadelphia Police Department and the conflicts I am working on. I also was privileged to deliver a closing speech on behalf of my cohort and, as a special treat, even served as auctioneer Peace Fellow Philadelphia police lieutenant D F Pace visited number of Rotary Clubs and exchanged Club banners. Welcoming reception for D F Pace in Bangkok. during a closing fund-raising art auction that our cohort organized. Something else I consider a success is the amount of insight I gained into the workings of police departments in Thailand and Cambodia. I took the initiative to visit police stations on my own time and established relationships with many officers and learned much about their challenges and successes. This was very useful to me as I report back to my own police department for training and career development. I am trying very hard to think of a negative but am having difficulty doing so. My host counselor, Mr. Quanchai was wonderful. Ms. Rattanavich and Mr. Watson were also outstanding in fulfilling their responsibilities. The program exposed me to over 500 years of experience among the various presenters in the field of conflict resolution. The field studies were very well organized and I learned much. I have already delivered my first speech since returning to my home Club (Philadelphia Rotary Club, ) Thursday, September 15, It was very well received. I will use much of what I learned in future training sessions that I will deliver to police officers here in Philadelphia. I also intend be at the District 7450 Foundation workshop on October 1 and the District 7450 Conference in November to extol the virtues of the program and to encourage more people to apply.
Page 5 At Eagles home games District Rotarians attend fall Rotary Leadership Institute The Exton-Frazer Rotary Club and the Central Chester County Rotary Club have joined forces to staff the Papa Johns Pizza concession stand Number 221, behind Section 221, for all Philadelphia Eagles home games at Lincoln Field. The Eagles donate a percentage of the sales to Rotary Clubs..Rotarians Paul and Pam Gunta and Ed Bauer invite fans to stop by and say hello and make a purchase. At left, Ken Carroway of King of Prussia Rotary Club receives the RLI Certificate of Completion of Level III from DG Bonnie Korengel. Longwood Rotary Club once again registered the largest number of Rotarians. Rotarians hear of world's dirtiest secret: slavery and trafficking Carol Metzker, past president of West Chester-Downtown Fridays Rotary Club and Kennett Square Rotary Club president Al Schmitt display a quilted wall hanging created with scraps from damaged dresses by survivors of trafficking and a volunteer friendship group. Metzker displayed the quilt at the August 9 Kennett Square Rotary Club meeting. She explained the quilt was made by volunteers from five countries who speak even more languages, and Rotarians from three Chester County Rotary Clubs, and represent three different faiths and span three decades in ages. Metzker explained the quilting project was accomplished without a common language, skill, talent or budget, and has formed the beginnings of a special friendship. The quilt was on display at the September 24 outdoor show at The Quilt Sampler in Kennett Square.
Page 6 Raising awareness of Rotary, Polio Plus Foundation Committee seeks support based on Rotarian s capability to pay WSFS Bank partnered with the Rotary Club of Concordville- Chadds Ford at the Concord Township Community Day September 10. Among those giving away cotton candy were (from left) Rotarian Carol Swerdon, Lisa Dort from WSFS Bank, and Rotarian Sue Mardinly. The cotton candy machine was donated by Jolly Jumpers. The booth raised awareness of Rotary International and the Polio Plus campaign to eradicate Polio, as well as Concordville-Chadds Ford's Rotary Club's community initiatives. Big Fish Restaurant and WSFS donated $50 gift cards for a raffle for the Club. Check Rotary7450.org/foundation for information about District 7450 Rotary Foundation Committee programs and projects. In an important change in the message coming from District 7450 Rotary Foundation Committee, District Rotarians are being asked for a contribution to the Rotary Foundation based on the capability to pay and not just for a $100 annual sustaining member contribution. In a message, which was scheduled to be delivered to all District Rotary Clubs by the end of September, it is pointed out the compelling needs the Foundation was helping with and the fact that many years have passed since the District began asking for the $100 amount. According to Bob Lankin, chair of District 7450 Rotary Foundation Committee, Over 30 members of our District already give $1,000 per year. The Rotary Foundation not only meets compelling needs and changes and saves lives, it also has very low administrative expenses of well under 10 per cent of its funds. It has been recognized by Charity navigator with its highest four star recognition. Support World Polio Day, October 24 To encourage widespread support for the effort to eradicate polio online on World Polio Day, October 24, the website makes it possible for Rotarians to join the ranks of celebrities and others around the world in pledging to make a difference in this effort. Right now, you can create your own This Close message, and share it with members of your social networks, and encourage them to do the same. This is how you can participate: Visit click on Add your face and name ; select a silouette; upload your picture or take a new one using your webcam; use the five different adjustment tools to customize your ad; personalize your ad by selecting a color for the background and End Polio Now T-shirt; publish your ad in the online gallery as part of the global campaign. Don t stop here. Share your pledge and invite friends to do the same through Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. You can also take part in a special celebration to honor the widelyrecognized World Polio Day and Rotary s tremendous progress around the world. The plan is to have Rotarians change their social networking profile pictures to their This Close ads and ask their friends to do the same, generating awareness about the issue and also collaboration. West Chester Rotarians collect food for West Chester Food Cupboard At a recent club meeting, Rotary Club of West Chester members collected a variety of food items to donate to the West Chester Food Cupboard to go along with checks totaling $350. Fiona Allison (far right), a volunteer with the Food Cupboard, told the Rotarians that over 550 families each month visit the food cupboard to receive seven days worth of meals. Rotarians helping fill the box of food items include (from left) Fran Luft, Phyllis Dunn and Tom Spackman. In addition, a Club member who owns a local restaurant donated a large quantity of food, and during the West Chester Rotary Club s annual fruit sale, over 130 boxes of fresh oranges and grapefruit are donated to the Food Cupboard.
Page 7 To Chester County Food Bank Glen Mills-Thornbury Rotary Club distributes backpacks By Eileen Shomo The Glen Mills-Thornbury Rotary Club is true to its motto of Service Above Self and recently sent more than 30 backpacks to the Chester County Food Bank. The back packs, which went to needy children and their families, were not filled with necessities for school but with nonperishable food provided by members of the Rotary Club. One member, John Munro, who is a printer, made writing pads from recycled paper, which went into each back pack, along with a pencil and more than 100 books. The books, geared to children in kindergarten through second grade, were a pet project of Club president Karen Mazzarella. Also included with the books was one that explained what Rotary Clubs are and their commitment to serve the community. Club members brought in new backpacks and food and an additional 20 backpacks were stuffed with food and provided by WSFS Bank. In addition, Rotarians donated $240 which was given to the Food Bank to purchase additional backpacks and food for families in need. The backpacks were presented at the August 31 breakfast meeting to Phoebe Kitson, director of the Chester County Food Bank, who expressed her appreciation for the wonderful gift. "Club members did a fine job of donating specific items that we requested," said president Mazzarella, who said the project will be ongoing throughout the year. Members of the Glen Mills-Thornbury Rotary Club filled backpacks with food, which were distributed to the Chester County Food Bank for distribution to needy children. On hand were (from left) Dave Rakow, DG Bonnie Korengel, Club treasurer Dave Barrett, Rose DiLeva, charter president Tony DiLeva, newest member Nick Jones, club secretary Hether Barron, Sergeantat-Arms Fran Gill, president-elect John Munro, Allen Rogers, Club president Karen Mazzarella, and Phoebe Kitson, director of the Chester County Food Bank which distributed the backpacks. Rotary District 7450 Leaders attend Zone Institute Future leaders of District 7450 attended the annual Rotary Institute and Leadership Forum for Zones 24 and 32 in late August in Boston, Mass.
