Visit Ardmore Rotary Club Website at ardmorerotary.org Rotary Club of Ardmore This week s reporter: Rod Rhen President Cynthia Rugart started the meeting promptly tat 12:30 p.m. and we began with a fine rendition of God Bless America followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. President Rugart gave an update on the 100 th anniversary celebration of the Chester Rotary Club that was held last week at Harrah s Chester Casino. Of the 60 plus attendees, one was District Governor David Haradon, and four members of our Club including President Rugart, PE Roe Dorris, and PP s Hogie Hansen and Jane Williams. All Ardmore Rotarians came away as winners of the raffle with PP Hogie winning the 50/50 drawing (which he promptly donated to the Chester Club) and the other Ardmore Rotarians winning what President Rugart described as a water thingy which sounded like it was the table centerpiece. Announcements We had a lot of announcements to start the meeting this week. On May 18, we will be celebrating our Club's designation as a 100 percent Paul Harris Fellow Club with District Governor Dave Haradon and DG-Elect Dawn de Furia presiding. On May 19, PP Christian Hoyt has arranged a fellowship night at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. The event will start at 6:30 pm at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and will include dinner followed by the program, all for about $40 per person. If you will be attending or have interest in attending, please contact Christian at cchoyt@comcast.net. On May 21, Fourth Annual Run around the Square takes place in Suburban Square. We need sponsors and runners to register!. Go to ardmorerotary.org for details. June 10 to 14, the Rotary International Convention takes place in Atlanta, GA. Incoming President Roe Dorris, plans on attending. On June 16, 11 Annual Merion Fire Company of Ardmore Golf Outing will take place at the McCall Golf and Country Club in Upper Darby. This is a change of day and venue for this fine event. Since it s closer to home, all the golfers in our Club are urged to attend! It s a great time. We greet a visitor We had one visitor at this week s meeting, Michele Zuckman from Friends Central School, came to accept a $200 check for Friends Central School s participation in the Fourth Annual a cappella Sing-off at the Haverford School auditorium in February. 2 2 RIARD May 4, (Continued from Page one) Rotary Training May is Rotary Youth Service month which President Cynthia focused on in the Rotary education segment this week. There are several programs in Rotary that focus on youth service, where persons under 30 can participate in service programs before becoming a regular Rotarian at age 30. She outlines what the different Rotary youth programs look like: ROTARACT: Rotaract Clubs bring together people age to exchange ideas with community leaders, develop leadership and professional skills and have fun through service. There are 291,000 Rotaractors serving in 9500 Clubs in 177 countries. Rotaract Clubs decide how to organize and run the club, manage their own funds and plan and carry out activities and servicer projects aligned with the causes that are important to a community. Rotary Club sponsors offer guidance and support and work with the Cub as partners in service. ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE: Youth Exchange is a student-abroad opportunity for students in secondary school (ages 15-19). Since 1929, Rotary International has sent young people around the glove to experience new cultures. Currently, about 9,000 students are sponsored by Rotary Clubs every year. Typically, student are sent to another country for a year-long stay, generally living with multiple host families and being expected to perform daily tasks within the household as well at attend school in the host country. Short-term exchange programs are also quiet common. These typically involve student exchanges between two families arranged through Rotary to coincide with major school holiday periods. EARLYACT: EarlyAct is a fairly new program for Rotary, first introduced in the U.S. about 10 year ago. It is not an official Rotary International program yet, but many Rotary Districts in the United States have initiated it and share the same guidelines and structure. EarlyAct is a selfsupporting school-wide service club in which all students (ages 5-13) are members. It can be an effective vehicle for fostering charter education in the school without adversely impacting standard curriculum. Its main mission is to carry out at least three service projects annually, one for the school, another for the local community and one the further international understanding. Today s speaker Our speaker for the day was Dr. Roger Allan, professor emeritus of Arabic and Comparative Literature in the Department of Near Easter Languages and Civilizations. Dr. Allan was at the University of Pennsylvania for 43 years until his retirement in He obtained his doctoral degree in modern Arabic literature from Oxford University in 1968, the first student to obtain a doctoral degree in the field at Oxford. Dr. Allan s presentation was mostly historical, by way of explaining how ISIS came to be. He first explained the origins of the Muslim religion and how the struggle for power within the religion following the prophet s death created the Sunni and Shia factions of the religion that still exist to this day. He also discussed how the Muslim religion quickly spread through North Africa, to Spain and France. He mentioned that many of the problems in that part of the world at this time are due to the way the region was split by geography, following World War II, rather than by creating regions or countries based upon like peoples or factions (i.e. Sunni or Shia, etc.) Because of this, strong dictators like Saddam Hussein have had some success keeping a country united, given that most of the countries contain disparate factions. Dr. Allan provided the following books for those that may want to further study the topics he discussed. The clear favorites, according to Dr. Allan, follow: On the history of the region Albert Hourani, History of the Arab Peoples; on Arab societies Halim Barakat, The Arab World: Society, Culture and State; and on Islam anything written by John Esposito from Georgetown University. He also said the study of the Quran is well worth dipping into, but NOT reading sequentially--that's not its purpose. Multiple translations, of which I think the best two are: A.J Arberry, The Koran Interpreted, and Michael Sells, Approaching the Qur an. April 29: Crew of 13 tackle spring clean-up of Sensory Garden Ardmore Rotary Club President Cynthia Rugart reports We had a rotating crew of people attend the garden cleanup this year. Two members of Bala Cynwyd- Narberth Rotary Club helped out for an hour and three students from St. Dorothy s School in Drexel Hill (one helped at the 2016 Pancake Breakfast), who were fulfilling a community service requirement for school, worked with Roseann Tully during their service of about 90 minutes. Ardmore Rotarians who worked in the gardens included President Cynthia, who doubled as photographer, Roseann Tully, chair Libby Goodman, PP Hogie Hansen, Chief Tom Hayden, PP Jane Williams, Ryan Dunn and JD Dougherty with his children, Peter, Thomas, Ava, Eva and Quinn. President Cynthia noted that the crew got quiet a bit done but we did not have enough hands to complete the work. The morning concluded with a picnic lunch thanks to Libby Goodman who baked cookies and provided a variety of drinks in addition to fruit, sandwiches and chips. The Sensory Garden, originally called The Garden for the Blind was created by a partnership between Lower Merion Township and Ardmore Rotary in the early 1970s. The same partnership resulted in upgrading the garden to make it accessible to those with handicaps in early 2000s. Initially the Main Line Men s Garden Club maintained the gardens, a responsibility now shared by Lower Merion, local civic groups and Ardmore Rotarians.
