3 Executive Director s Note The 2014/15 fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, has begun the groundwork to move the Western New Mexico University Foundation forward. I am pleased to provide you with an annual summary of the important activities, support and leadership from the Board of Directors that have propelled change and positioned the Foundation for advancement of Western New Mexico University. The WNMU Foundation secured over $550,000 in the fiscal year, inclusive of gifts to endowments, in-kind contributions and donations to the agency accounts held to support the university campus community. We issued 152 scholarships totaling over $135,000 to students supporting their financial needs and recognizing their achievements. Three new endowments were created, the Henry W. Bing and Mary J. Ewalt Scholarship, the John and Linda McGee Scholarship and the Edwina and Charles Milner Artist Lecture Series. Together, in a time when private donations have seen a decline, our donors, alumni, faculty, staff and community members have continued to make contributing to the University Foundation a priority. The Board of Director s openness to examine the organization and make difficult decisions will help us to embrace the challenges and opportunities that are ahead of us. Foremost, they voted to reorganize the administrative structure to create a stronger relationship with the University. The Foundation now serves as the umbrella area for Alumni Affairs, and the platform for an office of advancement with both areas reporting to the Vice President of Business Affairs. As a separately incorporated 501(c)3 non-profit organization, The Foundation exists solely to benefit Western New Mexico University in all applicable capacities. The Board of Directors opted again to hold the spending threshold policy for endowed scholarship awards at 2.5%. Effective January 2015, Wells Fargo Wealth Management manages the endowment portfolio. To provide the potential for greater gains, the Board made the decision to change our investment strategy from balanced to balanced appreciation and increased the minimum funds for a new endowment to $15,000. The importance of being a component unit of the University is crucial to decision making. To be consistent with University practices, the Foundation changed accounting standards from FASB to GASB. Following the new standards, the 2014/15 fiscal year end audit has been completed and we received an unqualified opinion with no findings for the tenth consecutive year. We are especially grateful to Board President, Richard Peterson, who took on the additional role of executive director after the former executive director retired in December Mr. Peterson served in this volunteer capacity for approximately six months while the Foundation was conducting its search for a new executive director. I am honored to have been chosen for the job and have been encouraged by the administrative leadership to use the rich history and commitment of those involved with our institution to take chances on new ideas that will give us the momentum to continue for many more years into our future. The profound nature of change is allowing me to be a part of this opportunity to transform the lives of the students we serve, to find ways to better support the faculty and staff that share their knowledge, to help improve our campus and to engage the community. The WNMU Foundation is a Foundation for Transformation. Everyone can be a part of giving. Thank you for being a catalyst of transforming the future together. Jodi C. Edens-Crocker Executive Director Western New Mexico University Foundation $550, $135,000 Secured by the Foundation this year Number of Scholarships Granted Value of Scholarships Awarded

4 Letter from Foundation President A Message from the President The WNMU Foundation is pleased to provide you with the new Annual Report, this year formatted as a calendar, and containing new information you may find of interest. This project is among the many changes occurring, in large part due to significant reorganization over past months and the guidance of our new Director, Jodi Edens-Crocker. I would like to make the point that a university foundation is more than its board of directors, its staff, its investments, or its report! It s fundamentally about student success and transforming lives. It s about transforming ourselves to meet changing and growing needs. It s about partnering with the university, and it s about connections with alumni and friends. These are not just words. Your Foundation is growing its commitment to the University, its students and its vision. We continue to focus on students, ensuring they have the financial tools needed. And in keeping with the spirit of transformation, we are transforming ourselves. Importantly, responding to the desire of the Board of Directors, fundraising is an area receiving more emphasis. We look to grow our work with the University Foundation as we engage in a growing number of annual campus, local, regional and special event fundraising campaigns. Success in these efforts means more opportunity for the University and students. WNMU has seen many changes throughout our 123-year history. No one knows better than you the feeling of excitement it is to be on our historic campus, seeing students on their way to class, athletes competing on the field, and professors sharing their passion each and every day. To continue to build on that success, we have created a Master Plan, outlining our vision for campus changes and updates through the next decade and a half. The plan provides a framework of how the university develops from within its boundaries while complementing our neighbors and constituents. This is not an absolute, but rather a flexible plan that adapts to our changing environment while holding firm to our values. Long-term growth can only happen through your continued generosity. Through the efforts of the University Foundation, we are growing our contributions and scholarship awards benefiting more students each year. As a direct support organization, the University Foundation s direction is a key asset to the development of our university for the future. Thank you for your contributions and support, and thank you for helping to make WNMU a special place for the next 123 years. 7 Matching Fund Campaign to establish student mentors Western New Mexico University plans to develop a unique student-mentoring program if at least $133,000 is raised through a matching campaign initiative with The State of New Mexico. The State of New Mexico has made available $400,000 to help WNMU provide the mentorship and research opportunities, if the university raises $133,000 before March 1. For every $1 raised, the State will provide $2. Seniors studying in STEM-H programs, which include science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health fields, will become mentors to other students, if the campaign is successful. The student mentors will provide academic mentoring and tutoring, as well as access to research to underclassmen. With the generosity of our community, a successful campaign will help us develop a modern approach to mentoring and provide additional research experiences, said Dr. Jose Herrera, Assoc. Vice President, College of Arts and Sciences Dean. The student mentor teams will also provide a community based approach to improve the likelihood that WNMU students will contribute to the educational and economic enterprise in the community. To learn more about the program and to make a contribution, visit $133,000 must be raised before March 1

Nearly 250 attendees and WNMU supporters were transported to the canals of Venice for an evening of dining, music and dance. The silent auction added to the excitement as guests outbid one another in hopes of making the winning bid on one or more spectacular auction packages, items and one-of-a- kind experiences. Student / Donor Luncheon The annual scholarship and donor recognition luncheon provides an opportunity for scholarship recipients and their donors to meet and celebrate the students achievements, while acknowledging the donors contributions to their success. The event honors WNMU Foundation scholarship recipients and each donor s extraordinary generosity. WNMU Foundation Scholarships make a difference! To a student who is struggling financially to meet the heavy cost of getting an education, a scholarship is the pivotal piece that makes their dreams and goals attainable. Join us on Monday, April 25. The $25,000 of net proceeds are used to help scholarship recipients reach their educational aspirations by lightening their financial obligations and enriching their overall university experience. An increase of proceeds by $5,000 is an indicator that this event is an important opportunity to all those who care about WNMU to support scholarships, our students and the entirety of the University community. We look forward to seeing you at the 4th Annual Foundation Scholarship Gala, Boots & Bling, Saturday, April 23, 2016.

13 A passion for students Linda and John McGee were surprised and overwhelmed when the establishment of an endowed scholarship named in their honor was announced at the 2015 Scholarship Gala. Linda, a fourth generation Grant County native, and John, from Portales, NM have been a part of the WNMU family for many years. There is no greater honor than to be nominated by your former students with a scholarship that they all funded, said Linda. Linda is a 1969 alumna with a BA in accounting. She taught accounting courses at WNMU for 30 years. Linda is a partner in the Stone McGee CPA firm in Silver City. John was born to a ranching family and worked for the Chino Mine division until Linda continues to give back to the University, serving on the WNMU Foundation Board of Directors since Both are staunch supporters of WNMU Athletics. Over the years they have traveled with and for the Mustangs, and sponsored the cheerleaders so that the squad could also travel to support the teams. The McGees have been like parents and an extended family to hundreds of WNMU students because of their welcoming home and open hearts. We are truly proud of each and every one of the students that have come into our lives and wish them the best with everything they accomplish in this life. Their compassion for students and the ability to provide financial assistance will continue to make a difference at WNMU through the John and Linda McGee Scholarship.

15 Ewalt Endowment Supports Early Childhood Program Mary and Henry (Bing) Ewalt first discovered Silver City after reading about it in a New York Times article in After several trips to visit the area in that same year, they purchased a home. The many diverse community opportunities that Silver City offers, together with the scenic wilderness environment, captured their interests. Their community involvement with organizations such as the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning, Mimbres Region Arts Council, Literacy Link Leamos and WNMU helped to strengthen their ties and commitment to the community at large. We came for the wilderness and stayed because of the people, said Bing. From Pittsburgh, PA, they are seasonal residents who travel between Pittsburgh and Silver City. Bing, a retired attorney, specialized in labor and employment law and has litigated cases all over the country including before the US Supreme Court. A US Army Officer veteran who served in Vietnam, Bing was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation during his service. Mary, with a B.A. from Rice University and M.A. from Northwestern, has been an English teacher, an administrator of non-profits, and manager of family real estate enterprises. A leader and doer, she is a staunch supporter and an active participant in the arts and environment with a distinguished record of volunteerism, including still being active as a lead docent at the Carnegie Museum of Art. In 2014, Mary and Bing made a charitable gift to create the Henry W. Bing and Mary J. Ewalt Scholarship. This new endowment will support students pursuing an early childhood degree and will make a difference in the lives of WNMU students in perpetuity. Even though we aren t WNMU alums, we support it and its Early Childhood Development initiatives because doing so is clearly an excellent, effective investment in the future of the University, its students, the community and its children and New Mexico. A poem inspired by the Ewalts giving by W. Jack Crocker Although not WNMU alums, We are graduates of life, and know That the future begins in childhood. To increase the odds a young life blooms Our endowment is like rain to grow Children s dreams, an investment toward the likelihood That as the taught child learns hope will take root and continually draw Interest, prospering in a life of accrued good.

19 Finding a new home, new future By Grecia Rivas It may not seem like it but my journey is like that of many others. I was born in Mexico and grew up in America. Growing up in a Hispanic family there are some principles that are important to me. Traditions, culture and family. They re important but so are hard work, dedication and being true to yourself. I know that my journey can inspire others who are looking to become someone so I m studying graphic design because I believe that I can make a difference in the world. I transferred from Pima Community College to Western last year and soon I ll be the first in my family to earn a degree. 21 Alumi Garden: A Place of Reflection & Honor The Alumni Garden was established in 2006 by a committee consisting of Eugene Gomez, Jimmy Jones, Patsy Madrid, Christy Miller, Ken Puleston, Jan Sherman and Betty St. John. Help was also received from Court Hall, First New Mexico Bank, Mike Martinez, Henry Sanchez, Silver Heights Nursery and the WNMU Maintenance Department. Hats in the Garden The University Foundation hosted Hats In The Garden in September 2015 as an event to engage Western New Mexico University supporters and to raise funds for the Foundation. Just as the Garden has transformed and changed with the seasons and the beautiful trees that began as saplings have taken root, the Garden represents the transformation and changes that have taken place throughout the history of WNMU. The Garden is a place of reflection for the lives that have been influenced by WNMU. Today the garden is enjoyed by the entire community; students taking selfies on the bridge, children playing in piles of fallen leaves; faculty, students and staff sitting under the gazebo sharing conversation. You ll find people enjoying lunch out on a bench and dogs and their owners taking in the sun. It is a place to honor those whose footsteps we follow, and a place to create memories. The event took place in the Alumni Garden and attendees wore creative hats. Local apparel businesses Vintage Fantasies and Raven s Nest partnered with the Foundation to present a fashion show featuring WNMU students. The People s Choice Award was awarded to a participant who wore the most memorable hat.
