1 District Governor s Newsletter No. I Carol L. King, District Governor July 2009 The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. From my very first meeting with President John Kenny, I knew that Rotary International had selected a very important person to lead our 1.2 million Rotarians into the next chapter of its history. A humble man with a commanding presence, he looked us straight in the eye and said, The future of Rotary is in your hands. In his own subtle way, he is leading Rotary back to the future. He is looking for quality in our membership growth; he wants us to continue emphasizing high ethical standards in business and private life; he wants members to understand their commitment to Rotary and to service; and he wants every Rotarian to take personal responsibility for the Future of Rotary. Mahatma Gandhi said that we must be the change we wish to see in the world. If, then, we want to see the future of Rotary in the image that President John Kenny suggests, our invitation is to personally take on the mantle of a quality Rotarian, to be mindful of our own ethical standards in every action, to stay committed to the objects of Rotary, and to individually place the future of Rotary into our own hands. Why are you a Rotarian? Give that some careful thought. This is your time to go back to the future. This is your time to recreate or redesign a new blueprint for your Rotary membership. Each month this year, there will be an invitation to listen to your Rotary dreams in a new way. Reach deep inside and listen to the voice that calls you to be a Rotarian and then step forward and grab that dream. Please join me and all Rotarians around the world as we begin a new year, for The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. Carol DG IT S COMING, AND THIS IS YOUR FIRST INVITATION TO ATTEND 2010 ROTARY DISTRICT 770 CONFERENCE Marriott Evergreen Conference Resort Stone Mountain, Georgia APRIL 30 - MAY 2, 2010 RESERVE THE DATES NOW- MAKE PLANS TO BE THERE WITH YOUR FAMILY!!!!! 4 District Goals for the Rotary Year District 770 invites Rotarians on a Friendship Exchange with District 300 in India. The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to experience other cultures firsthand, by participating in reciprocal visits with Rotarians from other countries and their families. Introduced in 1984, this program advances international understanding among Rotarians. It provides Rotarians with the opportunity to form personal contacts and make long-lasting friendships while exploring different areas of the world. Exchanges are pre-planned, so that participants know prior to arrival the hospitality they will receive and the wonderful friendships that will be made during this exchange. A Rotary Friendship Exchange is being planned during this Rotary year. The Host district is Rotary International District 300. Their District Governor, Major SK Sharmawill ensure that your exchange is a delightful event. He and Governor Carol are classmate Governors, fellow Rotarians and most of all great friends. She will ensure that you are well prepared for the adventure. The visits, both outbound and inbound, will be approximately two weeks each. Tentative dates for the outbound Friendship Exhange aare January 18th through February 1st. Inbound dates for a visit from Rotarians of District 300 are April 23rd through May 7th. Dates are subject to change to accommodate the itinerary of both inbound and outbound Exhange team and attendance at Distric Conferences in both locations. District Chair, PDG Bill Shillito, is responsible for coordinating exchange for District 770. Please dg07-08@rotary770.org or call at cell with questions or concerns. Guideline and other information are available on the District data base: We are now accepting applications. The Exchange will be limited to no more than five couples. Applications must arrive no later than October 1th, 2009 at the District Office, PO Box 1954, Asheville, NC This event is a great opportunity to visit in a land that is rich in history and to extend the hand of Rotary fellowship to new friends. Interact and Rotaract Plans for Leadership Training Rotary Clubs in District 770 are stepping forward to sponsor Interact Clubs in area high schools. Interact is Rotary International s service club for young people ages 14 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of Developing leadership skills and personal integrity Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work Advancing international understanding and goodwill This coming year, Interact Clubs can be recognized with the International Presidential Citation. You can get details and the form: Rotaract Clubs are Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they re sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. You may download the Rotary international Presidential Citation for Rotaract form from Leadership training for Interact and Rotaract clubs, advisors, and sponsoring clubs is planned for early fall. More information as plans fall into place.

5 Anna Knights, outbound youth exchange student to Chile. She is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Brevard. Photo credit: Lee Mager Outbound Youth Exchange District 770 Five Youth Exchange outbound students will be sponsored by local clubs and living in other countries during the next year. The Rotary Club of Brevard is sponsoring a student who will go to Chile; a student from Cashiers sponsored by the Rotary Club of Highlands club going to Argentina; a student from Black Mountain sponsored by the Rotary Club of Black Mountain going to Argentina; a student from Lenoir sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lenoir, going to Finland; and finally a student from Asheville sponsored by the Rotary Club of Asheville going to Turkey. This is lots of work and many thanks are extended to the sponsoring clubs and the families of these youth. All youth in the exchange arehigh school aged youth. All five of these students and their parents attended the orientation convention at Otterbein College in July with Don Fuller and Frank Rutland. This is required attendance for the students, but not for their parents. The parents also came and students and parents felt the time and travel was energy well spent. It is a busy weekend with 75 students and their families plus district and Ohio-Erie representatives in attendance, during which they receive intensive orientation and training and have an opportunity to meet with their Ohio-Erie Country Contacts as well as representatives of It's Your World Travel who handle all visa and ticketing arrangements. The students also have a wonderful opportunity to bond, and they end the weekend with a talent show (required participation) and pizza party on Saturday night. Overall a great weekend! The youth will head out in August. Look forward to more about the outbound Youth Exchange and it is never too early to talk to your club about hosting an incoming student fromanother Rotary country. The Youth Exchange is headed by Bill Biggers, Frank Rutland, and Don Fuller. RYLA CAMP 2009 The Rotary Club RYLA award for this year gave 48 high school students a week for leadership training, new friendships, and confidence to assume roles as leaders in their own high schools and communities. RYLA 2009 began on Sunday, June 14. Parents and Rotarians brought the campers to the Brevard Music Center. Campers were not sure what to expect as their parents departed and they joined their counselors to stash their gear, make beds, and find the way to the cafeteria. Some sat in groups and others sat alone--all wondering what the week would bring. Each day concentrated on different areas of leadership. Jerrod Summey, the lead counselor, helped the campers think about college expectations and how to pull their high school experiences and community service into a college application. Evenings included learning to dance mountain style with Joe Smith and company who taught the campers and Rotarians to square dance. The campers have often listed this activity as one of the best for the week. There are many more activities including community service in the Transylvania County nonprofit organizations. RYLA camp keeps the activities, learning experiences, and fun varied and participation oriented. On Saturday, the RYLA campers evaluated the week, made some suggestions for the next year's camp. Tears flowed, cameras flashed, and the campers headed home. Not one left feeling alone. The campers had become friends. The counselors went to lunch to relax and evaluate the week while the Rotarians walked away from RYLA 2009 with smiles, ready for a good night s sleep. RYLA 2010 is scheduled for June Applications will be available soon. Plan to send a deserving high school student to RYLA 770. RYLA rocks! Make plans to be a part of RYLA next summer. RYLA teams work to build a raft that will float in the lake at Brevard Music Center. RYLA camper putting up food at the Sharing House in Brevard. Photography credit: TMUG club, David Day, Brevard

6 From David LaMotte...his first report on his experience as a Rotary World Peace Fellow at the University of Queensland, continued from the June issue... I m deeply impressed with the program, both in terms of U.Q. s academics. I continue to be impressed by my fellow Fellows, even more deeply as I get to know them better. Class VII is sad to see Class VI leaving and we will feel the lack of them next semester. I have heard professors on more than one occasion speak to the idea that having the Fellows in their classes elevates the dialog, and have noted that it is often the Fellows who take the lead in vari-ous projects and discussions. Class VI, I should note, was wonderfully welcoming to us when we arrived, and have been consistently supportive and inclusive. The investment that Rotary makes in the Peace Fellows is significant, both in financial terms and in terms of time and energy. From what I have seen so far, though, it is a good investment. The quality of the Fellows and of the instructors who are shaping them leads me to believe that through this program the Rotary Foundation will be able to leverage a great deal more positive change in the world than it would effect by simply investing that money in aid. Thank you again for the opportunity to be a part of this extraordinary program. Sincerely, David LaMotte CLUB NEWS Carrying on the Tradition... In the Rotary Club of Waynesville, Winton (Andy) Anderson became a Rotarian in 1947 and served as his club's secretary four years later. Grandson. Brandon Anderson, became a Rotarian in 2004 and is serving as his club's secretary five years later in l) Don Crane, r) Bob Masengill Don Crane. Bob Masengill was presented with the Paul Harris Fellow Award for outstanding service to the community by a non-rotarian. The award and was presented by Rotary Club of Pisgah Valley, member, 2009 Blowing Rock Citizen of the Year, Jerry Burns, left, being presented with an honorary Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club of Blowing Rock Foundation Chair, Vernon Dunn. Rotarian Aneel Butani, from District India - presents a $10,000 check to Patricia Harrison member of the Rotary Club of Asheville- West - and representing the EMMA RESOURCE CENTER. Allison Jordan-Children First looks on. This is an historical moment for the club. Honored as Rotarians of the Year: Richard Tucker, charter member of the Rotary Club of Hickory-Sunrise, pictured with PP Lee Judy Dormer, Rotary Club of Blowing Rock We owe a big apology to Bruce Bingham and the Rotary Club of Valdese for omitting Bruce from the list of Assistant Governors recognized in the June newsletter. It is an oversight we truly regret. His and the club s service to the District in was greatly appreciated.
