2 SKILLS SUPPORT FOR RE-TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT Introduction Skills Support for Re-training and Employment is a new initiative for small and medium sized businesses in Staffordshire and Stoke -on-trent. It offers fully funded training and qualifications to support individuals improve their career opportunities and existing skills and knowledge through work based learning. The Skills Support for Re-training is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and co-financed by the Education & Skills Funding Agency. Organisational Needs Analysis (ONA) The purpose of the Organisational Needs Analysis is to identify what training solutions are required to enable your organisation to meet its objectives. Businesses typically suffer from a skill shortage, which is a threat to the overall growth of the company. In order to compete and develop, companies need skilled staff who are up to date with techniques and technologies. Upskilling is vital in this respect for growth and development of business, plus maintaining competitiveness in the market place. What is the impact of training for the business? 7 Employer Case Study Birchall Engineering is a leading local mechanical and electrical building services company, based in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The company recently introduced a new CAFM database system to manage maintenance schedules and create reactive works for their engineering workforce. Under normal circumstances, the training required to give staff competence on the system would have been expensive and limited to a few employees. However, with the support of Stoke on Trent College and the ESF Skills Support and Retraining for Employment fund, Birchalls were able to carry out much more thorough and widespread systems training, across a wide range of staff from managers to administrators in different departments. Robert Hamnett Compliance and Asset Manager at Birchall Engineering said: We ve been really pleased with the training that has been possible through Stoke on Trent College s ESF Skills Support and Retraining funding. It has enabled us to introduce a brand new system to the business and get lots of staff up to the right level of competence quickly and at no cost.
