2 What is the Care Certificate? The Care Certificate is the new framework for the induction of Health and Social Care staff. It has been introduced to ensure your staff are properly trained to carry out their role. The Care Certificate is not a formal qualification but it does link to the Health and Social Care Diploma. Who is it aimed at? The Care Certificate must be undertaken by all staff who are new to working in Health and Social Care. It must also be undertaken by Health and Social Care staff who have not completed the Common Induction Standards. What does the Care Certificate include? The Care Certificate has 15 Standards. These are:- 1. Understand Your Role 2. Your Personal Development 3. Duty of Care 4. Equality and Diversity 5. Work in a Person Centred Way 6. Communication 7. Privacy and Dignity 8. Fluids and Nutrition 9. Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disability 10. Safeguarding Adults 11. Safeguarding Children 12. Basic Life Support 13. Health and Safety 14. Handling Information 15. Infection Prevention and Control How much does the Care Certificate cost? The Care Certificate costs 20 per person, plus VAT. Page 2 of 10

3 How will elearning help me? Our elearning courses have been specifically designed to match the assessment criteria of each of the Care Certificate Standards. The elearning courses will provide your staff with the knowledge and understanding they need to demonstrate competent knowledge in the assessment criteria through written or oral questions and discussion with you, or with their assessor. The elearning courses will guide your staff to opportunities to extend their learning by conducting research and/or practising skills in the workplace. Staff are advised to download a work pack for each Care Certificate Standard. This will need to be completed and handed to you, or their assessor, for formal assessment. See below for instructions on how to do this in the How it works section. The staff member will also receive a certificate to recognise the successful completion of the elearning course, which can be added to their Care Certificate portfolio. How are staff to be assessed for the Care Certificate? Assessment for the Care Certificate will include both the knowledge and performance of your staff. Their knowledge can be assessed using oral and written questions and discussion. Staff s performance will be assessed by observation. This means you, or an occupationally competent person will need to watch the staff member carrying out specific tasks in the workplace. The observation is needed to check that staff, not only know how to do their job, but are able to put their knowledge into practice. The learning process may include classroom based training, simulated activities, research and elearning. Staff will need to gather evidence of their learning which they will need to place in a file to create a portfolio of their work. They will need to keep this in a safe place to show evidence that they have completed the Care Certificate. Once staff have completed the Care Certificate they do not have to complete it again. How long will it take for a staff member to complete the Care Certificate? Staff are expected to complete training, education and assessment as part of the Care Certificate, within the first 12 weeks of employment. Page 3 of 10

4 Who issues the Care Certificate? When a member of staff has completed all of the 15 Care Certificate standards successfully, you can complete and print a certificate. See below for instructions on how to do this in the How it works section. How it works The guidance below provides a step by step breakdown on how the Careskills Academy Care Certificate works: Step 1 A. If you ve not already done so, create a Careskills Academy account here: B. Place your order for the Care Certificate by calling us on. Please have your debit/credit card handy to make payment. The cost is 20 per Care Certificate (plus VAT). C. Log into your account and add your staff member (learner) onto our online learning system. Page 4 of 10

5 Click elearning tab Click Add Students tab Click Add student button and complete the process. D. Enrol learner(s) onto the Care Certificate. Click elearning tab Click Enrol Students tab. You will then see the screen above. Select Enrol learners on group to enrol onto all 15 Care Certificate elearning stsndards. Step 2 The learner will then receive an letting them know they have been enrolled onto the Page 5 of 10

6 Care Certificate, along with their login details. At this point they can log in and start working through each of the 15 elearning standards to achieve the knowledge required. Each elearning standard has a formal assessment at the end, and a downloadable certificate to evidence the knowledge gained for that standard. The learner must achieve at least 80% in each of the 15 elearning standards to complete each standard. To print certificates for students: Click the elearning tab Click the Track Results tab Click on the printer icon. The certificate is then available to download. See below. Page 6 of 10

7 Step 3 Within each elearning standard there is a downloadable work pack which the learner will download and print. This work pack will provide guidance on what aspects of each Care Certificate standard need to be observed in the workplace. This will also have a number of questions which the learner will need to answer. When the work pack is complete the learner will hand it in to you for assessment and feedback. Page 7 of 10

9 Step 4 The learner will download and print the work pack. There will be question for the learner to answer as well as work based observations for you (the manager) to sign off. Once all 15 elearning standards and work packs have been been successfully completed, you can issue the learner with the Care Certificate. This will go in their portfolio along with all 15 elearning certificates and work packs. The link to the Care Certificate template can be found directly from this link: Page 9 of 10

10 This is an example of the Care Certificate template. You will need to fill in the details and present to your learner upon successful completion of all 15 elearning standards and the work packs.
