4 Cleaning Professionals Skills Suite (CPSS) Where your professional career begins Whether you are looking for one off accredited and certified skills training or you are looking for approval to certificate your own employees to BICSc standards, BBS can help. For more than 50 years the British Institute of Cleaning Science has been raising the standards of the cleaning industry through accredited training for cleaning professionals. Each year more than 1,000 professionals develop their skills and knowledge through CPSS skills training, which is recognised throughout the industry and worldwide. The Cleaning Professional s Skills Suite has over 30 skills to choose from, allowing you to build and tailor your core cleaning competencies to your role; whether you are new to the industry, looking to improve your knowledge or specialise in particular tasks Complete the Licence To Practice Unit Keeping you Safe The Licence to Practice Unit (LTP) covers the essential skills required for anyone working in the cleaning industry. Every cleaning operative must complete this unit to understand the reasons and practicalities of safe working before progressing onto further skills training with the Cleaning Professional s Skills Suite. All candidates must complete the Licence to Practice Unit. This unit has been made compulsory to protect the safety of cleaning operatives, users of buildings, as well as to promote sustainability. The minimum requirement for CPSS is the Licence to Practice assessment. Enhance your skills with Base Units and Additional Units Upskilling Base Units cover the skills that cleaning operatives use daily. These units can be selected on their own following the LTP Unit or combined with other skills from the Cleaning Professional s Skills Suite. Additional Units are skills that cleaning operatives use frequently. Become a Cleaning Specialist Enabling you to grow your career In addition to the Base and Additional Units there are also a variety of Specialist Units available. These skills are ideal for cleaning operatives who work in a specific environment requiring specialist knowledge. Any specialist skills that cleaning operatives achieve will be listed on a skills card awarded to the candidate on completion of their training. Rules of Combination The rules of combination outline the units that you must have completed to demonstrate your competency before you can gain Specialist Units. You must have a valid Licence to Practice to undertake these units (as per the rules of combination). For example, to achieve SU1, you must also have BU2, BU6 and AU5 (in addition to the Licence to Practice Unit). 6 Train the Trainer Training you to Train your Team About the Course The Train the Trainer course is suitable for anyone involved in workplace training in all industries. Candidates who successfully complete the course will receive a card from the Institute detailing they have completed the course workbook as proof they are qualified to carry out training in a competent manner. Course Aims Candidates who complete the course will have: Knowledge and understanding of how to write and set SMART learning objectives. The ability to plan and deliver a structured training session using effective assessment techniques. Who is the Course For? This Course is for those who train others in the workplace. Planning and Organisation Introduction Presentation Skills Time Management Support Materials Questioning Aims / Objectives On completion of this course candidates will be able to: Plan and deliver an effective training session with the help of teaching aids such as presentations and lesson plans. Produce effective support materials to aid the delivery of training. Confidently use questioning techniques to encourage their trainees understanding and knowledge. Write and set SMART learning objectives. The course is assessed at the end of day two of the workshop. The candidate assessment is carried out through practical demonstration. The candidate must successfully cover the seven assessment skills criteria. The course is delivered through a combination of practical and theoretical learning. 5 6

7 Become a BICSc Licenced Assessor Training to become a BICSc Assessor will enable you to verify that your staff are trained to BICSc Standards and provide you with the next step to your career in cleaning. Assessor Training A two-day course which includes half day assessment by a Verifier. Course Aims Candidates who complete the course will have: Comprehension of the CPSS Skills Suite. To provide an understanding of BICSc Standards. Assessor status and qualification. Approval, verification and audit. of candidates. To demonstrate competency with BICSc administration. Registration. Certification. Processes and record keeping. The candidate will be independently verified on the second day of the course by a BICSc Verifier. A pre-course workbook will be sent prior to the course, this should be completed and brought to the day. PowerPoint presentation with practical demonstrations. On completion of this course candidates will be able to: Complete the BICSc paperwork. Carry out a range of assessments, understanding the pass or fail criteria. Be assessed by the Verifier for their Assessors licence. 7 8

8 On Premises Laundry Learn the technical skills required for your in-house laundry About the Course The On Premises Laundry (OPL) course is suitable for operatives who are responsible for the safe and hygienic laundering of items such as linen, workwear or work related materials. Candidates who successfully complete this course will receive a card from the Institute detailing all the skills that they have achieved as proof that they are qualified to carry out OPL in a safe, hygienic and professional manner. Course Aims Candidates who complete the course will have: Sound knowledge and understanding of the potential risks involved in this type of operation and fully understand the importance of working in a safe, logical manner while protecting themselves and others. Be able to make informed decisions and assess the risks involved in different situations. Who is the Course For? Understand risk assessments and safe systems of work and the importance of adhering to the instruction. Identify types of soiling present. Select all appropriate personal protective item materials and equipment required. Understand and apply the technique required to complete the procedure in a safe, clean and controlled manner. The candidate assessment is carried out on a one to one basis through practical demonstration the candidate must successfully cover the eight assessment skills criteria. This course is for operatives, team leaders or supervisors who deal with any aspect of the laundry process. An approved BICSc Trainer will carry out the skills training prior to the assessment of the candidate. 9 10

9 Car Valeting Professional Car Valeting (CV) About the Course The course is suitable for operatives who are responsible for the cleaning of cars whether personal, fleet or forecourt. Candidates who successfully complete this course will receive a card from the Institute detailing the completion of the CV workbook as proof they are qualified to carry out CV in a safe and professional manner. Course Aims Candidates who complete the course will have: Sound knowledge and understanding of the potential risks involved in this type of skill and fully understand the importance of working in a safe, logical manner while protecting themselves and others. 10 E-Learning Infection Control Level 2 Identify & control the hazards About the Course Infection Control Level 2 is an online course jointly certificated by the University of Northampton and The British Institute of Cleaning Science. The course is recommended for candidates responsible for delivering a safe and hygienic environment. Candidates who complete the online course will receive the University of Northampton/British Institute of Cleaning Science Certificate of achievement as proof that they are qualified to carry out safe and hygienic practices in a working environment. Course Aims Candidates who complete the course will have: Developed knowledge, and understanding of scientific facts, terms, methods, concepts, principles and relationships. A sound scientific background for those who intend to undertake further academic study in this or a related field. Developed the skills required to manage environmental cleaning related issues. Candidates learn through an online virtual learning environment (a CD copy is available on request). Understanding of the types of microorganisms that cause infection. Knowledge of the transmission of infection. Understanding of good hygiene practices. Knowledge of good waste management practices. Be able to apply decontamination techniques to control and reduce risks of infection. The course is assessed in two ways; a short answer self-assessment test and a final multiple-choice assessment. There is a pass mark for the multiple-choice assessment of 70%. Candidates have the opportunity to sit the final test twice

12 Cleanlogic Health & Safety Course Underpin your technical knowledge This half-day Health and Safety course has been designed to meet the requirements of individuals looking to improve their knowledge of health and safety within the cleaning industry through BICSc best practice. Candidates will learn the fundamentals of health and safety, including an understanding of COSHH, risk assessments and how to write Safe Systems of Work (SSOW). About the Course The course will provide a working knowledge of the BICSc requirements with regard to: COSHH SDS Chemical Risk Safe System of Work SSOW Risk Course Aims To provide an understanding of the paperwork that is required for all BICSc training. Templates for COSHH and Risk s will be provided on USB for candidates to take away with them. Who is the Course For? On completion of this course candidates will be able to: Produce a COSHH assessment of a chosen chemical. Write a Risk for a given area and task. Understand a Safe System of Work. Understand the relevant areas of the SDS, with regard to COSHH. The candidate will be issued with a certificate of attendance upon completion of the workshop along with handouts and USB. Ideal for people who have responsibility for writing Risk and COSHH assessments. It provides good underpinning knowledge for people who train to BICSc Cleaning Professionals Skills Suite (CPSS) standard. 13 Cleanlogic - Control of Cross Contamination Course Underpin your technical knowledge This half-day Control of Cross-Contamination Course has been designed to meet the requirements of individuals looking to improve their knowledge of cross-contamination control in the cleaning industry. Candidates will learn best practice techniques for infection prevention as well as how to prevent a breakout from occurring or spreading. It ensures that the operative will be at no risk from working in the area of a potential breakout. About the Course The Control of Cross-Contamination course is suitable for anyone involved in, or who would like to gain an understanding of infection prevention in the cleaning industry. Course Aims Candidates who complete the course will have: Knowledge of best practice techniques relating to infection prevention. An understanding of how to prevent a breakout from occurring or spreading. On completion of this course candidates will be able to: Confidently apply best practice techniques to deal with infection prevention. Prevent infection breakouts from occurring or spreading in the workplace. Keep operatives and others safe in the workplace. The candidate will be issued with a certificate of attendance upon completion. Who is the Course For? This course is for individuals at all levels who are responsible for cleaning to provide an understanding of infection prevention and the role the cleaning operative plays in preventing breakouts in the workplace. 14 Cleanlogic - Work Rates and Work Loading Workshop Underpin your technical knowledge This one day workshop has been specially designed to give you an understanding of building plans, cleaning specifications and productivity rates. This workshop will also provide a helpful understanding of how many hours are required to clean a building. About the Workshop To provide a working knowledge of building plans and how to read them. An introduction to understanding different types of cleaning specifications. Standardised productivity rates for different building types. Variables that commonly affect productivity. Supervision options. How to benchmark your buildings with regard to Work Rates. Workshop Aims To provide an understanding of the hours required to clean a building and what can affect this.
