A. Lisa Tenney welcomed the group and called the meeting to order at B. Ms. Tenney acknowledged the large group in attendance at this meeting and welcomed the group of nursing students from Frederick Community College. C. Ms. Tenney reviewed the MMC ENA Tri-fold board on display at the meeting with the group. The board is currently being displayed at SGAH. D. Ms. Tenney requested volunteers to take the board to display at their hospital at the next meeting. Stephanie Holmes volunteered to take the board to St. Mary s Hospital. and Discussion A. B. C. D. President s Report 2. A. Ms. Tenney informed the group about the Maryland State ENA Council meeting held February 5, 2014 at Sinai Hospital. 1. Maryland ACEP ER Nurse of the Year was selected. Congratulations to Sheila DeRiso from WAH. Ms. Tenney noted that the last three year s recipients of this award have been MMC members. 2. State membership was 991 as of December 31 st, 2013 per Anne May. 3. MDENA submitted a Resolution to National on ER Nursing Orientation Process. 4. Announced that National ENA Elections coming- Membership status must be in place by May 1 st, 2014 to vote. 5. Nominations for National ENA Awards due March 31 st, MMC Membership Report (Pam Fox) = 311 1

Upcoming Educational Opportunities: a. Maryland Patient Safety Conference March 21, 2014 National Harbor b. Metro-Baltimore Chapter (MBC) = Disaster Preparedness, Sinai Hospital, Thursday, April 3rd 2014, 5-9:30 p.m. c. Maryland ACEP Conference, Thursday, April 10th 2014, BWI Hilton d. ENA By the Bay, May 14-15, 2014 (Registration open now. Early Bird registration ends May 8th) 9. Two Minutes of News Effecting Emergency Nurses: a. National shortages of normal saline still exist. MIEMMSS is looking at changing their protocols that specify lactated ringers. b. There are currently more than 300 medications in shortage nationally. The problem is ongoing. c. Medscape and ENA BYTES both highlighted infant deaths related to swaddling. d. There have been 50 cases of measles in NYC. e. There has been a decade-long crack down on deaths related to opiates. Heroin use is increasing and deaths have been increasing. i. MD ACEP has a Pain Management pamphlet; MDENA approved it. ii. Susan Sheehy informed the group about a Narcan program that has saved 179 lives in Huntington, Long Island, NY since January 1 st of this year. See Ms. Sheehy for more information. iii. Ms. Waak commented on ED physicians reluctance to prescribe longacting opioids. iv. John Carvalho informed the group about Holy Cross Hospital s Pain Management Program and spoke to the risks of Narcan use. See Mr. Carvalho for more information about this. 3. Review/Approval of January 8, 2014 MMC meeting minutes by Ms. Martin. Approved with corrections. 4. A. Legislative Report: Ms. Crown reported. See 24 Feb for legislative details. Lisa wrote letters to legislators supporting proposed bills: 1. ENA = SB243 Brianna s Bill- Requires Hands only CPR and AED to be taught in 2 A. B. Ongoing
3 Maryland high schools 2. ENA = SB330 and HB307 Protective Orders Standard of Proof 3. ENA = SB334 HB334 Permanent Protective Orders 4. ENA = SB41 HB775 Protective Orders Expansion to Include Sexual Assault/Dating Violence 5. ENA = SB337 HB306 Children and Domestic Violence 6. MIEMSS asked some members to support HB 534 Compact Hospitals- Lisa after a clarification of some of the clauses. 7. MCASA asked Lisa to support HB 963 Have Nurse, Will Travel requiring all health care facilities to provide SANE exams- Lisa declined saying that it would be too big of an expense for hospitals and require too many resources. 8. ENA on the Hill on 5 and 6 May 2014 (Contact Hershaw Davis hndavisjr@gmail.com) 9. Emilie and Lisa attended Nurses Night in Annapolis on 17 February 2014; met with Representatives Barkley, Robinson, Kirill, and Senator Nancy King. Also spoke with Senator Jeannie Forehand. a. Discussed Above ENA bills and the two MNA bills b. MNA = HB856-State of Maryland Task Force to address Community Health workers c. MNA = HB0710/SB483-Health Care Facilities Workplace Violence B. Ms. Tenney provided background information for the guests in the group about the Knapp Injury Prevention Grant and the upcoming Wounded Warrior BBQ that MMC will cosponsor with Yellow Ribbon Fund, Boston College Alumni, and Two Sisters Realtors on April 24, Ms. Sheehy informed the group that a limited number of volunteers may attend the event. Please coordinate with Ms. Tenney if you would like to assist with the event. A list of attendees needs to be provided to the WRNMMC gate in advance of the event. 2. There will be a free raffle and gift bags for wounded warriors and their families. We are still accepting donations. 3. The Safe Kids Van will be there and Ms. Crown, Pam Fox and Lucy McDonald will run the safety board information, car seat checks and give-a-ways. 4. There will be a live band (The Volunteers, the ARMY s Rock Band). 5. Ms. Sheehy informed the group that Boston College Alumni raised $600 for the event. 6. MMC ENA will provide personal contributions of food and gifts, arrange for clowns, and music, and provide the IQSIP station for this event. 7. Event will be rain or shine. 4 Treasurer s Report Barbara Proctor Conference Members Announcements Wounded Warrior Café. 8. Sally Martin agreed to create a flyer for the BBQ and will a draft to the planning committee for approval by March 22 nd. 5. Ms. Waak reported: $ in the MMC checking account $10, in the MMC savings account. The Knapp Injury Prevention grant represents $ of the savings account amount. 6. Sandy Waak informed the group about this conference, MMC s 25 th year hosting this conference. The conference will be held Friday, September 12, 2014 at Prince Georges Hospital Center. A. Ms. Waak informed the group that persons interested in speaking at this conference need to contact her ASAP. Deadline for speakers and titles of their presentations, outlines of their presentations, and objectives is May 1 st so that there will be time to get the CEUs and fliers for the conference made. B. Planning is underway for food for breakfast and lunch provided at the conference, vendors, the Dauphin helicopter to be onsite, and door prizes. C. Time is limited as we only have two more MMC meetings prior to the conference, May 7 th and July 8 th. D. Ms. Waak reminded members that we usually label and stamp fliers at one of our meetings prior to the conference. E. Volunteers were solicited to work on CEU applications and set-up the conference the day before. Members are reminded that one of the benefits of helping with the conference is free registration. See Ms. Tenney or Ms. Waak if you would like to volunteer for this event. 7. A. Ms. Fox attended the 2014 Leadership Conference held in Phoenix, AZ March 5-9, She reported this will be the last stand-alone leadership conference ENA offers and that future conferences will be combined with the annual conference. Themes included were patient flow, staff and patient satisfaction, and coaching. While at this conference, Ms. Fox attended the all-day chapter leaders conference and she shared information gleaned from this with the group. Ms. Fox shared copies of information with Ms. Tenney and forwarded information to the MD ENA State President. 1. Ms. Fox voiced concerns about some organizational requirements she learned about that may require legal assistance to assure that we are in compliance with state business laws. Michael Oxenford suggested that we explore using attorneys that National ENA may already have on retainer. 2. Ms. Fox also shared that we need to include a way for MMC members to opt out of future s. a. Ms. Tenney informed the group that s are sent to members listed as current members on She informs members who request no more s to update their profiles on the website. b. Sally Martin shared information with the group about a free application for iphone and android phones developed by CNMC for pediatric emergency care. Interested members should search their app stores for Pediatric Quick Reference and look for the Children s Dr. Bear logo. C. Ms. Fox reported that the upcoming ENPC course being offered at St. Mary s Hospital is full. It will include 16 students. D. Ms. Waak informed the group about the instructor update process for the new version of TNCC. There will be no old courses (version six) offered after July 1, E. Ms. Waak informed the group that she will teach an international TNCC course in May in Abu Dhabi. The group was informed that she has previously taught TNCC in South Korea. 8. A. Increase outreach activities to ER nurses and leaders within the MMC geographic area 2. Administer the Knapp Injury Prevention Grant and promote injury prevention activities 3. Host our 25 th consecutive Barbara Protor Educational Day for Emergency Nurses 4. Celebrate accomplishments of MMC ENA members 5. Address issues effecting emergency nurses at the national, state and local levels 6.
