2 Barnsley NHS FT Barnsley NHS FT is a bright, modern Hospital, opened in The Trust has 640 beds served by a staff of 2172, in a variety of specialties including Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Care of the Elderly, GU Medicine and Dermatology. Barnsley is conveniently situated close to the M1 motorway. Exit at Junction 37 and follow the A628 to Barnsley. At the first set of traffic lights turn left (signposted to the hospital), proceed along Pogmoor Road for approximately one mile and you will arrive at the Hospital on your left. Parking is available on the streets around the hospital and also on site for a charge. For those using public transport Barnsley is on the main railway/coach network from Sheffield, with a regular local bus service up to the Hospital. Dr Dyfrig Hughes, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, is Acting Associate Director of Undergraduate Medical Education who, together with Everild Hindley the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Officer, work towards providing an interesting, challenging and varied timetable, whilst offering both educational and pastoral support. Phase 2 students will join a team to follow a varied programme, concentrating on basic clinical skills, history taking and physical examination of the patient, whilst learning how to interpret the findings and record them concisely. Time will be spent on the wards and in outpatient clinics, as well as having additional teaching sessions designed to complement the placement. A number of bleeps are available for use by the group which require a returnable deposit when loaned. Accommodation is only available to those students who are on-call and can be booked as and when necessary. 3 Bassetlaw Hospital Bassetlaw is a small and friendly hospital with fairly modern buildings and good facilities. Each year, the hospital treats around 33,683 patients along with 38,420 emergencies in the A&E Department. Travelling by car when there is no traffic takes minutes from Sheffield using either the M1 or the A57, but in the mornings, leave 50 minutes to get there on time. On the first day enter the hospital site via Gate 2 off Kilton Hill, there is a free car park adjacent to the Education Centre and then follow the signs for the Education Centre to report. Students are attached to a named consultant, and will attend clinics, ward rounds and teaching sessions. A timetable will be given out on arrival. 4 Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust A medium sized District General Hospital, opened in 1984, based a mile outside the centre of Chesterfield in an area known as Calow. The hospital is the town s largest employer with a workforce in excess of 3,500 staff and works to an annual budget of 190million. The hospital was one of the first in the country to become a Foundation Trust in January 2005 and serves a population of around 416,000 across the Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales and North Amber Valley, High Peak and North East Derbyshire districts. Patients are cared for in one of 19 wards consisting of 570 general and acute beds including paediatrics, Women s Health Unit, Emergency Management Unit and Clinical Decision Unit. In terms of critical care beds the Chesterfield Royal Hospital has 16 neonatal beds, 6 Intensive Care Unit beds and 8 beds in the High Dependency Unit. In addition there are 40 maternity beds (16 in the birth centre and 24 in antenatal) and 97 day care unit beds. Once students have identity badges they can join the medical library which is located in the Postgraduate Medical Education Centre and has a range of book specifically for medical students. Students are also allowed access to 'Webzone' also situated next to the library. Webzone is open 24 hours a day and has 7 computers linked to the Internet. Chesterfield is 12 miles from Sheffield and can be reached easily by car, train or bus. If you are travelling by car go to the Meadowhead Roundabout in Sheffield 8 and get onto the A61, following signs to Chesterfield. At the junction with the B6057 at the roundabout take the third exit (straight on). At the junction with the B6050/B6052/B6057 at the roundabout take the 2nd main exit (straight on). At the junction with the A619 at the roundabout take 2nd main exit (straight on). At the junction with the A617/A619/A632 (Chesterfield) branch left onto the slip-road after the Chesterfield Hotel (signposted Bolsover and 'H' hospital sign). Then at traffic signals turn right onto the A632. Go 1.5 miles up the A632 - the Chesterfield Royal Hospital is on the left hand side. Chesterfield can also be found off Junction 29 of the M1. If you are taking the train to Chesterfield you are advised to take a taxi to the hospital or catch a bus from Church Way near the crooked spire as the hospital is uphill. Students will be attached to a specific ward and team for the duration of the attachment and will receive additional formal teaching sessions in a range of areas. A timetable will be provided on arrival at the hospital. Accommodation is only available to those students who are planning to stay most nights or who are on-call. 5 Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital The Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital is situated in Grimsby and is part of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust. This Trust was established on 1 April 2001 and operates all hospitals in Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole. Joining information is posted on Minerva approximately 4 weeks before the students commence their attachment. This includes information about accommodation, car parking and induction. Also attached are maps of the area and hospital grounds. Further details of the facilities provided for medical students are available from the Undergraduate Administrator - Caroline Whitfield, or Student Liaison Officers Kathryn Hallam / Mandy Derringer at the hospital. Students are expected to attend inductions at 11am on the first day of attachment to allow time for travel and booking into accommodation on the first morning. The inductions take place in Mears House where students are issued with a Welcome Pack including details of Trust Policies, hospital and local area information. This is followed by their ID Badge session and an induction with their Lead Tutor. Once students have ID Badges, students will then have 24 hour access to Mears House where they can use the Student Common Room with TV and refreshment facilities and also the IT/Study Room (usernames & passwords for the use of PC s can be issued by the office staff). Students can also join the Trust Library which is located in the Post Graduate Centre. By car come off the A180 and then take the A1136 to Great Coates, then follow signs for A46 to Cleethorpes. Buses run between Sheffield and Grimsby on a regular basis. The journey takes roughly 2 and half hours by bus. Accommodation has automatically been booked for you by the Undergraduate Team. If for any reason you do not require accommodation, please let one of them know before you arrive on placement. Upon arrival your keys will be waiting for you in the accommodation Office, which is in block 6 flat 43a. Keys will be available to collect between 9am and 10am on the first morning of placement and you are welcome to move in any time after this. Please remember to bring some ID. The accommodation is in blocks of flats for four people with a TV room in some of the blocks and two laundry rooms. Each room has a desk, wardrobe and telephone. Bed linen and hand towels are provided. In the kitchen crockery, cutlery, pans and tin openers are provided. 6 Doncaster Royal Infirmary The hospital provides a full range of services appropriate to a large district general hospital in 800 beds. Each year the hospital treats around 150,000 patients along with 95,500 A&E patients (combined figures for Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital). The Royal Infirmary is situated 1 mile from the town centre and is easily accessible due to good public transport routes and its location in the centre of the M1, M62, M18 and A1 (M). Students have use of IT facilities, Internet access and the Library and Learning Resource Centre. Wi-Fi access is available to students staying in hospital accommodation. Lockers are available for a 10 deposit. Leave the M18 at Junction 3, then at roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A6182 (SP Doncaster) At traffic signals continue forward onto the A6182 (SP Doncaster) At next traffic signals turn left onto the A6182 (SP Doncaster) At roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A6182 (SP Doncaster) At Sidings roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A18 (SP Thorne, Bawtry) At Racecourse roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A18 (SP Scunthorpe and Thorne) At next roundabout take the 1st exit onto Armthorpe Road (SP Wheatley Hills and Town Centre) Take 2nd exit at mini roundabout and continue forward until you reach the Infirmary. By Rail: Leave the Railway Station and cross over to the new Frenchgate Interchange. Catch bus number 81 or 82 (to Armthorpe) at Gate C2. The bus will take you to the Hospital. Gates 4 and 3 are on Armthorpe Road. Park & Ride: A free Park & Ride Scheme runs between Doncaster Racecourse (DN2 6BB), Car Park A on Leger Way, Doncaster and DRI, Gate 3 Monday to Friday between 6.30 am and pm. Students are attached to a medical or surgical firm and will attend clinics, ward rounds and theatre sessions. A timetable will be given out at Induction. Accommodation is available, but the number of rooms is limited. Therefore all students are asked to fill in and return an Application for Temporary Accommodation Form available from Olwyn Duce, Accommodation Officer at Doncaster, olwyn.duce@dbh.nhs.uk. This form must be returned no later than four weeks before the placement starts. Rooms cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to accommodate students wherever possible. 7 Rotherham District General Hospital Rotherham General hospital is a major provider of high quality health care for South Yorkshire's local population of 252,000. The hospital has over 500 inpatient beds on site with excellent modern facilities covering Medicine, Surgery, Women's Health and Child Health. The hospital has undergone modernisation in a variety of areas such as a purpose built A & E Department, Health Care for the Elderly Unit and new Medical and Surgical Admissions Units. Rotherham is extremely popular with medical students. It is a friendly hospital with medical staff who are keen to teach. There are dedicated undergraduate staff to organise teaching timetables, clinical sessions and to provide both educational and pastoral support. Students have access to computers/internet in the library and the newly built Student Common Room, which also has kitchen facilities. Lockers are also available. Rotherham General Hospital is situated on Moorgate Road, approximately 1.5miles away from the town centre. Car parking is available and parking permits are available from the Undergraduate Office at a reduced rate for students. You are advised to arrive early if you wish to park on the hospital grounds, parking on the residential roads around the hospital is prohibited. The hospital is 2 miles from Junction 33 off the M1. There are frequent bus and train services between Sheffield and Rotherham and the hospital itself is served by several bus routes. Accommodation is available to those students who are unable to travel and for students wishing to take part in oncall. Accommodation can be requested from Verna Wilde on / verna.wilde@greatplaces.org.uk During your clinical attachment in Phase 2B you will be divided into pairs with a named consultant. You will spend a large proportion of your time on both Medical and Surgical wards, shadowing qualified staff and putting into practice the basics of history taking and examination. In addition, you will have a structured teaching timetable with other ad-hoc teaching sessions often organised as appropriate or on request. 8 Scunthorpe General Hospital Scunthorpe General Hospital provides acute hospital services to the surrounding population and forms part of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust along with hospitals at Goole and Grimsby. There is a hospital social club within the grounds of the hospital. Arrangements have been made with the Social Club Committee to give you temporary membership during your stay. The usual facilities are available, cheap drinks, satellite television, snooker, table-tennis and pool. The opening hours are Monday-Saturday, 7pm-11pm, Sunday 3pm&7pm-10pm. Joining information is posted on Minerva approximately 4 weeks before the students commence their attachment. This includes information about accommodation, car parking and induction. Also attached are maps of the area and hospital grounds. Further details of the facilities provided for medical students are available from the Undergraduate Administrator - Pam Reed at the hospital. By car- the Hospital's main entrance is located on Church Lane, Scunthorpe, off the A18 Kingsway to Scunthorpe and signposted General Hospital. It is easily accessible from the M18 to M180, taking the M181 to join the A18. From Scunthorpe Station - turn left out of Scunthorpe Train Station along Station Road, you will come to a set of traffic lights, carry straight across along Church Lane, and the hospital is on your right (about a fifteen minute walk in total). Scunthorpe is on the main line - Cleethorpes to Sheffield. From other areas change at Doncaster. Our aim is to expose you to a wide array of Surgical/Medical clinical material. There is a timetable which we have arranged for you. However, if on that particular day you have an inclination to do something different please convey your intentions to the particular Surgeon/Physician whose clinic or ward round you are supposed to be attending. Bleeps are to be collected from switchboard. The accommodation block has 6 en suite rooms, divided into 3 rooms on the ground floor and 3 rooms on the first floor with a shared sitting room and kitchen to each block. The kitchens contain an electric oven, microwave, fridge and washing machine along with crockery, cutlery, iron, ironing board and other sundry items. The bedroom contains the appropriate soft furnishings together with a bed, wardrobe, dresser, study desk/chair and lamp, together with a remote control TV, radio alarm clock and telephone. The rooms are cleaned daily Monday to Friday and the bedding is changed weekly. Please bring your own towels. Accommodation has automatically been booked for you by the Undergraduate Team. If for any reason you do not require accommodation, please let one of them know before you arrive on placement. Upon your arrival accommodation keys will be waiting for you, from the SGH accommodation office located in Edward Jenner blocks Church lane between 9:30-10:30am only. Staff car parking permits for the pit will be issued priced at approx per week. You can ask for a casual user form at induction and when completed please return to the security office. If you are arriving by car you will have to use the intercom to buzz into the pit car park (behind the accommodation Staff parking) and tell them you are a medical student. 9 Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Sheffield Teaching Hospitals was recently voted among the top 40 hospitals by CHKS based on the results of testing the Trust s performance in 22 key areas which included safety, clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and quality of care. Students are allocated to a Clinical Lead, usually a Consultant or senior doctor in either a Medical or Surgical specialty. Information for those students based at the Hallamshire Hospital: The Royal Hallamshire Hospital is part of the Central Campus which includes Weston Park Hospital, Jessop Wing and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. The Royal Hallamshire Hospital is a major acute teaching hospital and is based around a tower block, with approximately 800 beds, nearly 6000 staff and a large outpatient department as well as a state of the art Critical Care Unit on K floor. Specialist services include Neurology, Urology, ENT, Surgical Oncology and Ophthalmology. The Jessop Wing houses Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology services, along with Gynaecology services on F and G floor at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. As well as labour wards and outpatient services, the Jessop Wing also houses the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Special Care Baby Unit and the Assisted Conception Unit. Weston Park Hospital has around 120 beds and is one of only three purpose built specialist cancer hospitals in England. Its world-leading reputation as a centre of excellence is internationally recognised. Weston Park Hospital also houses a Cancer Research Centre and a Teenage Cancer Unit The Charles Clifford Dental Hospital is a dental teaching hospital which is linked to the University of Sheffield s School of Clinical Dentistry. The hospital provides dental outpatient services and emergency dental care for patients in Sheffield. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital also provides training for Dental Nurses. The Undergraduate Office at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is staffed by a dedicated team within the Medical Education Centre, led by Mr Shah Nawaz, Director of Undergraduate Education. Their aim is to provide good quality clinical placements supported by dedicated clinical leads and their multi-disciplinary teams. The Medical Education Department on R floor, RHH, houses a Simulation Suite and various sizes of training room which can be booked by students for study or examination practice. An acute teaching hospital located to the north of the city, it is spread out over a large 112-acre site. Amongst its specialist services are Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Diabetes, Vascular Surgery, Respiratory Medicine (including a specialist Cystic 9

10 Fibrosis unit), renal services and Spinal Injuries. The adult care Accident & Emergency department is also based here. Adult Psychiatric Services are also based at the Northern Campus. A shuttle bus is available at half past and on the hour of every hour from outside the Clock Tower building at NGH.
