1 Enhancing knowledge and skills in adult mental health April 26 & 27, 2018 New Location! The Education Center at Eastern AHEC 2600 W. Arlington Blvd. Greenville, NC This annual conference continues its tradition of providing quality training to mental health and human service professionals serving adult clients and their families. Participants can attend a variety of sessions, earn up to 12 hours of credit, and complete their ethics requirements for licensure all in two days! Everyone can earn two hours of ethics credit with our opening plenary entitled Ethics Reboot: Aligning Your Digital Practice with Current Ethical Standards. An additional two hours of ethics will also be offered. Other topics of interest include: working with Hispanic families, suicide prevention and intervention, nutrition and mental health, crisis services, three sessions on trauma, two sessions on substance use, mindfulness, and many more! A one day rate is also offered for those that are unable to attend both days. For the first time, we are offering nursing credit! Sessions are appropriate and applicable to practice for all psychiatric, substance use, and advanced practice nurses and nurse practitioners. With the increasing use of technology in personal and professional settings, new and complex ethical issues arise. This keynote session will explore ethical standards from a variety of disciplines related to the use of technology and social media in professional practice. Trends and themes associated with technology related ethics standards will also be considered. 3 April 26, 2018 Early Afternoon Concurrent Sessions 12:30-2:30 p.m. Session A - Ethics Reboot: Aligning Your Digital Practice with Current Ethical Standards tina m. souders, MSW, LCSW, jd Clinical Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work Intermediate and Advanced This interactive session will focus on the application of technology-related ethical standards from various disciplines to complex ethical scenarios. In small groups, participants will analyze ethical scenarios and apply existing technology related standards to identify and resolve ethical challenges. Implications for ethical practice in the digital age will also be discussed. Session B - Suicide: Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention Jodi Flick, MSW, LCSW Clinical Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work While recognizing the seriousness of the topic, this session will present a hopeful view of the current state of research and the progress being made in understanding suicide and in prevention and treatment. The session will focus on the biological, environmental, and cognitive contributors to depression and suicide, provide updates on research on risk and protective factors, clinical and legal standards of care and prevention efforts and their effectiveness. The impact of suicide on families, communities, and clinicians will be considered with guidelines for responding in the aftermath of suicide. Issues covered include the latest research about the influences of family history, serotonergic functioning, adverse childhood events, comorbidity, and other factors. This presenter is supported through the partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work and the NC AHEC Program. Session C - The Myth of the Slut: How Sexual Double Standards Lead to Violence Against Women kathleen kat bursky, ma, lpc Victim Advocate, Center for Counseling and Student Development, East Carolina University Beginner and Intermediate In our society, women face a myriad of double standards when it comes to sexuality. While men are praised for their sexual exploits, women are shamed for engaging in any sort of sexual activity, especially outside the bounds of a committed relationship. This is more than just a nuisance-it is a cultural norm that results in real and serious violence against women. This presentation will explore sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence against women. The presentation will also explore what is known as purity culture and challenge the societal belief that women who engage in sex outside of a narrow context are immoral, untrustworthy, and unclean. Finally, the presentation will cover the physical and emotional effects of slut shaming and offer tips on how to combat it, which will ultimately create a safer, more equitable environment for women. Session D - Connecting with Your Hispanic Clients: Mental Health Strategies and Engagement rubi Merino, BSN, RN Nurse Consultant, Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program, College of Nursing, East Carolina University This session will enhance basic knowledge of Hispanic culture and their beliefs about mental health. You will be able to discuss universalities of the Hispanic culture, identify typical beliefs about mental health in the Hispanic culture, examine barriers to treatment, identify ways to build trust with your Latino clients, and describe issues that affect migrant and immigrant families. An overview of strategies to reach this vulnerable population and enhance mental health care across the lifespan will be discussed.

4 April 26, 2018 Late Afternoon Concurrent Sessions 2:45-4:45 p.m. Session A - The Basic Neuroscience of Addiction: Debunking the Choice Myth Jessica holton, msw, lcsw, lcas Private Practice Intermediate Over the past 25 years, our society has witnessed vast scientific and technological advances. Such advances, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), have great implications in assisting and improving the treatment of addiction. Regrettably, despite these scientific advances, deep rooted stigmas and misconceptions remain among the general population and helping professionals alike. This presentation will describe possible predisposing factors and undercurrents of addiction and the basic neurobiology of addiction. The presentation will also describe adaptive coping skills that assist in recovery and wellness. Session B - Suicide: Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention (repeated) Jodi Flick, MSW, LCSW Clinical Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work This is a repeat of the early afternoon session. Session C - Interventions for Sleep Disorders D. erik everhart, phd, abpp, cbsm Professor, Department of Psychology, East Carolina University This session will describe the major types of sleep disorders found in adults, discuss the evidence-based interventions for the treatment of insomnia, describe the various components of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) that are used for treatment of insomnia, and discuss interventions that improve adherence to CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea. The Signs and Symptoms of Trauma Part 1 of a 3 part Trauma Track (Take entire track or select any session) ellen pallme, msw, Lcsw, lcas, ccs Training Consultant, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work Beginner This session will explore the signs and symptoms of trauma, how to screen for trauma, and will outline guidelines for treating trauma. Developmental trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders will be examined as well as evidence-based treatment approaches. This presenter is supported through the partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work and the NC AHEC Program. Session B - Updates in Treatment with Psychiatric Medication toni Johnson, md Vice Chair and Director of Residency Program, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, East Carolina University In this session, you will identify new medications for treatment of psychiatric illness, examine adverse events related to the use of psychiatric medication, and discuss the research on medication and future possibilities for treatment of psychiatric disorders. Session C - Neuropsychological Assessment and Aging katherine kane, PhD Clinical Neuropsychologist, Greenville VA Health Care Center This presentation aims to explore common changes in cognition that come along with normal aging and progressive neurological issues including dementia. Different dementia etiologies and aphasias will be reviewed, as well as when to refer for cognitive testing, common screening measures used, what a full neuropsychological evaluation is comprised of, review of common data patterns, and how neuropsychological testing data can be translated into everyday recommendations. Case examples will be reviewed to apply knowledge gained from the presentation. Session D - I Bleeping Love Science: Sharing Science and Debunking Pseudoscience with Patients brandon kyle, phd Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University matt whited, phd Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology East Carolina University In the information age, misinformation and pseudoscience abound. It can be difficult for practitioners, let alone patients, to separate quality research from the latest fad or trend that turns out to be useless or even harmful. Yet, in an era of evidence-based practice, many practitioners may feel compelled to help guide their patients towards the best information. This session will discuss science and the scientific method, suggest how to differentiate high quality research from poor quality research and pseudoscience, review some common popular health myths and fads, and provide tips on how to discuss scientific evidence with patients.

6 April 27, 2018 Early Afternoon Concurrent Sessions 12:30-2:30 p.m. Session A - Staying Focused: Balancing Trauma and Substance Use Disorder Treatment (Part 2 of Trauma Track) ellen pallme, msw, Lcsw, lcas, ccs Training Consultant, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work Intermediate and Advanced This session will look closely at the interaction between trauma and substance use disorder. How are they interacting and what do we need to be mindful of as we address these concerns concurrently? The presentation will be interactive and draw on participants experiences to further understand the interplay between these two disorders. Personality disorders and trauma will also be discussed. Session B - The Role of Nutrition and Mental Health: Improving Mood with Food heather reed, ms, RD, LDN Employee Wellness Dietician, Nash UNC Health Care, Rocky Mount Beginner and Intermediate This presentation will explore the relationship between nutrition and mental health. Overall nutrition plays a role with psychiatric conditions including depression, bipolar, schizoaffective disorders and several others. Lack of key nutrients in the diet affects mental health. Common deficiencies will be discussed with their corresponding dietary sources or supplements and food drug interactions. In addition to deficiencies, nutrients that promote brain health will be identified along with the risks and benefits of certain diets. As the saying goes, You are what you eat, and this presentation will provide you with techniques to help fuel the brain! Session C - Opioid Crisis: National Public Health Emergency craig toombs, MSW, LCSW, LCAS, CCS Substance Disorder Clinic Coordinator, VA Greenville Health Care Center This presentation will cover researched statistics that depict the specific prevalence of the substance abuse problem nationwide. This substance abuse disorder will be defined along with the signs and symptoms of substance use disorders as a whole. The opiate use disorder problem will be defined in its impact on the nation in addition to the signs, symptoms and various biological, psychological, social and spiritual dynamics involved with opioid use disorders. Substance use as it pertains to the military veteran population will be covered. Preventative and treatment measures will be covered as well. Session D - Crisis Intervention Services: How to Stop the Revolving Door natasha holley, msw, lcsw Clinical Director, Integrated Family Services brigida morris, msw, lcsw-a, LCAS-A Northern Regional Mobile Crisis Director, Integrated Family Services benita hathaway, ms, RN, LPC Trillium Health Resources lieutenant carlton williams, MJA South Zone Commander, Greenville Police Department gary Payton, BA, QP Pitt County Magistrate marvalette bradley, RN Intake and Assessment Manager, Vidant Behavioral Health - Ahoskie Numerous individuals visit emergency rooms unnecessarily for behavioral health concerns because they aren t aware of community resources that can be utilized. Consequently, emergency rooms are overcrowded, hospital beds are not being occupied by individuals who truly need them, and excessive money is spent to ensure medical care for the same individuals who could be served in the community. An effective community crisis response requires knowledge about crisis intervention resources such as crisis intervention teams and mobile crisis management services, collaborative efforts from stakeholders to treat individuals with behavioral health concerns in the community if appropriate, and a commitment to be a change agent in the community crisis system. Through case scenarios, and with the support of an expert panel, participants will apply the knowledge gained to seek an alternative to hospitalization.

7 April 27, 2018 Late Afternoon Concurrent Sessions 2:45-4:45 p.m. Session A - Treatment Options for SUD and Trauma (Part 3 of Trauma Track) ellen pallme, msw, Lcsw, lcas, ccs Training Consultant, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work Intermediate and Advanced This session will explore the various treatment options available to address SUD and trauma concurrently. The focus will be on Seeking Safety, DBT, and MORE, exploring the lens used to address challenges presented when working with clients. Case studies will be presented to demonstrate how these methods can be applied to clients. The importance of using these methods in gender-specific programming will also be examined. Session B - Removing the Mask of Masculinity in Therapy jacob jensen, Phd, LMFT Assistant Professor, Marriage and Family Therapy Program, Human Development and Family Sciences, East Carolina University In this session we will examine the common pressures men feel to live up to masculine stereotypes persistent in our culture. We will process how to improve engagement in therapy, especially focusing on how to help men become more vulnerable about their shame, fears, anger, and sadness. We will discuss how both men and women can benefit from males demonstrating more sensitive and empathetic behavior. The session will be interactive and will include small group discussions, multiple video clips, and opportunities to ask questions. Session C - The Mindful Minority: Understanding and Treating Stress in African American Women Using Mindfulness Interventions maya pittman, ncc, LPC Staff Counselor, Center for Counseling and Student Development, East Carolina University Intermediate and Advanced As double minorities, African American women experience a myriad of marginalization stemming from a status that involves battling patriarchy, racism, and other socioeconomic disparities. The cumulative and constant experience of stress often leads these women to develop learned ways of coping that can further impede on their management of stress. This presentation will explore this unique experience, identify the implications and barriers to seeking treatment, and understand how mindfulness principles can serve as an effective intervention. An overview of evidence-based mindfulness practices and interaction with mindfulness based skills will allow participants to expand their multicultural competency, while engaging in a practice that can be used inside and out of the clinical setting. These skills can be utilized for professional and personal use. 8 Credit Category A-NC Psychology Credit This program will provide up to 12.0 contact hours of (Category A) continuing education for North Carolina Psychologists. No partial session credit will be given. Contact Hours Certificates reflecting up to 12.0 contact hours of education will be awarded at the end of this conference. National Board for Certified Counselors Credit (NBCC) Eastern AHEC is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider and may offer NBCC- approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements.
