4 COURSE DESCRIPTION Based on his latest book, Principles of Trauma Therapy (2006), co-authored with Catherine Scott, MD, this new home study provides cutting-edge, directly-applicable information on the integration of cognitive-behavioral, attachment, relational, and physiological approaches to trauma. Dr. Briere presents new material that formally integrates Buddhist philosophy and empiricallybased mindfulness approaches with effective trauma treatment. Also included is new information on interview based assessment, cross-cultural issues, psychosis, stress reduction training, clinician counter-activation and the neurobiology and psychopharmacology of trauma. This program is suggested for psychologists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses, advanced graduate students and other healthcare professionals with an intermediate knowledge in this field. It is not suitable for the general public. STATEMENT OF NEED Working with psychological trauma is a delicate balance between support and confrontation, forthrightness and patience, and humor and resolve. All of these aspects are necessary to make a real impact upon what has historically been seen as a challenging client population. Needs assessment data collected from a variety of sources indicate training in the integration of cognitive-behavioral, attachment, relational, and physiological approaches to trauma would be of ongoing value to professional therapists. Dr. John Briere s live workshop,, was developed to address these needs. This home study will allow professionals for whom attending a live workshop is difficult or inconvenient to receive the same training benefit and increase their clinical skills. OBJECTIVES After completing this home study, participants will be better able to: Describe a variety of clinical tools and techniques relevant to trauma survivors List 3 techniques to increase affect regulation or tolerance Describe the primary characteristics and impacts of mindfulness as it relates to trauma therapy Outline the primary components of hot spot processing Discuss the role of psychopharmacology in trauma treatment Discuss therapists counter-activation and its influence on therapeutic disparity Date of Original Release June 2008 Revision Date May 2016 Termination Date May
