Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation, Inc. Address: 120 Lowery Place, S.E., Fort Walton Beach, FL Phone: Henry.Kelley@mail.okaloosa.k12.fl.us. Basic Project Information What priority area(s) will your project address: Is this a re-granting (minigrants) project where applications will be reviewed from teachers, classrooms, schools or your district?: Estimated Number of Total Students Impacted by project: Grade Levels to be Addressed: STEM Education. No. 5. Project Detail Project Abstract: The proposed project will fund the participation of fifth grade students from Mary Esther Elementary School in the 2015 Lego League Challenge TRASH TREK. Students will be involved in collecting and sorting trash and then implementing smart production and reuse of that trash. Team(s) of up to ten (10) members will build and program an autonomous MINDSTORMS robot and then begin to address the Challenge components. The team(s) will then register for and participate in a tournament to be judged on Project Presentation, Core Values and Robot Design as well as three rounds of the Robot Game.. page 1 of 9
2 Project Summary Participation in the Lego League Challenge will provide an opportunity for students to be introduced to engineering and the occupations of the future. Students will, through building a robot and then programming it to achieve the tasks required by the Challenge, be engaged in real life applications of the STEM initiatives. The students involvement will include attaining understanding of the use of different sensors for the operation of an autonomous robot as well as acquiring the skills and knowledge to use looped and linear programming. The team(s) will be coached by a staff member and will be mentored in this project by community members, by students on a local high school robotics team and by other Mary Esther students who have participated in the Lego League Challenge in the past. The students on the robotics team(s) will register for and participate in a regional competition and, hopefully, advance to the state level completion.. Need: The instructional and administrative staff at Mary Esther Elementary School recognize the need for their students to have a platform that provides real world opportunities to apply problem-solving skills. They also recognize that the competitive nature of the Challenge and the involvement of community-based and student mentors enhance the learning process and environment. In a community in which there is a large military presence and one in which research and development represent a significant segment of the employment base, it is important to continue the link between learning and earning.. Project Goals and Objectives: The goal of this project is to provide fifth grade students at Mary Esther Elementary School with the equipment, materials and activities to successfully participate in the 2015 Lego League Challenge. That participation will result in: acquisition of advanced STEM skills; attainment of valuable life and employment skills; and, development of mentor/protégé relationships with community members and other students. Objectives: No fewer than ten (10) students will participate in the Lego League Challenge for Of participating students, no less than 80% will successfully demonstrate proficiency in programming and in logging computer code.. Project Timelines No later than October 1, 2015: First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Team(s) Identified FLL Registration Completed Community Mentors Recruited November, 2015: FLL Open Practice and Pre-Qualifying Meets January, 2016: FLL Qualifier and State Competitions February, 2016: Open Robotics Club Membership On-Going: Robotics Team/Club Meetings Professional Development, as appropriate. Evaluation Plan: Evaluation of the project will be documented by the teacher/coach for the project through classroom page 2 of 9
3 observation and participation data.. page 3 of 9
4 Outcome Measures STEM EDUCATION: Report on improvements in student knowledge, behaviors and attitudes toward STEM education and career fields. Number of project participants who show increased interest in STEM education Number of community participants who acted (volunteered, donated, promoted, ratified, etc.) to advance student achievement as it relates to STEM education. Describe how the above outcomes will be measured (what tests/surveys/data sources will be used): The number of project participants who show increased interest in STEM education will be documented through the number of students who participate in the LEGO Challenge and in the Robotocs Club. The number of community participants who serve as mentors for the project will be documented by the staff member who serves "robotics coach". page 4 of 9
