3 1.1 What is FIRST Robotics? FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a high-school level program of the FIRST foundation, a non-profit organization whose acronym stands for F or I nspiration and R ecognition in S cience and T echnology. The foundation s vision is simple yet ambitious: "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders." Dean Kamen, Founder FIRST pursues this objective by hosting engineering competitions that promote creative and innovative methods of achieving the competition goal. FIRST has created four such grade-based competition leagues: The FIRST Jr. Lego League (FJLL, K-3), FIRST Lego League (FLL, 4-8), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC, 7-12), and the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC, 9-12). In each league, a challenge is proposed annually all teams in that league must strive to fulfill. Ideas and methods of completing the challenge can wildly differ with extremely varied levels of success. These programs progress in complexity as competitors age, ranging from small newspaper sized Lego block contraptions in the Jr.FLL league that allow a full year for construction, to 120 pound, 6 foot tall aluminum robots in FRC. These robots are drafted, fabricated, and constructed in a short 6 week build season that are nearly unlimited in design. 1.2 Team Organization Teams are advised by mentors, industry professionals acting as experts in their respective fields, who are responsible for the day-to-day logistics of running a team. However, all the work - from business and marketing, to computer modelling, to even the final fabrication of the robot - is entirely student led. The burden of success - or failure - rests entirely on the shoulders of the students. These competitions are not designed to be easy, they are meant to 3 of 10

4 develop valuable skills by experiencing real world problems and application of knowledge in an entirely different, non-classroom environment. As a whole, FIRST comprises of 38,000 globally competing teams in totalling over 400,000 students. 1.3 Competition History Totalling such a large number, students on the Granite Bay team have competed in a gigantic number of competitions. Our team is no stranger to success, also, and has routinely qualified for FRC s World Championship. In 2015, we experienced phenomenal success, ranking in the top 8 in two regional competitions, we were once again invited to compete at the world championships at St Louis, Missouri. Last year, the 2016 season, 295 placed top 8 at Davis regional and second at the Las Vegas Regional against international teams, earning the Wild Card invitation to World Championships for excellent defensive play. We hope to continue this success with a new group of over 70 student members in Team History Team 295 Granite Bay Robotics, prepares students for leadership roles within their school and community, and fosters professional skills such as teamwork, accountability, time management, community involvement, and entrepreneurial spirit. These values are crucial to success in the future of students, and must be taught beyond the confines of a classroom, in an environment where students are truly responsible for themselves. Granite Bay Robotics has been participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) since From its inception, Granite Bay Robotics has cultivated the best of students Granite Bay High School has to offer, with alumni of the program achieving success in Stanford, UCLA, Cal Berkeley, and many more. Over the years, Granite Bay Robotics bloomed from a tiny team of 5 to over 76 active members, and growth shows no sign of decline. 4 of 10

5 2.2 Mission Statement Granite Bay Robotics is built off the ambition to educate the next generation about engineering and technology. Through learning-by-doing, students gain valuable traits such as leadership, responsibility, and academic ambition, integrating STEM into the Granite Bay community and progressing our new generation. 2.3 Outreach Our team aims to fulfill our vision of excellence not only within the team, but also in our community. Community classes hosted by Granite Bay Robotics include introductory Lego NXT Mindstorms and Vex Robotics training workshops. Within these programs, elementary and middle school aged pupils are taught basic programming, engineering, and design skills to foster their interest in s cience, t echnology, e ngineering, and m athematics fields (STEM). Furthermore, due to the ratio of girls to boys in STEM related careers being so infamously disproportionate, Granite Bay Robotics also hosts girls-only classes that are taught by the strong female engineers of the high school team. 3.0 Resource Requirements Annually, the team requires $40,000 solely to participate and compete in FRC. The bulk of the funds go to registration and entry fees to various competitions that our team attends. The other portions go towards funding tools and parts that are necessary to the completion of the robot. Furthermore, extra funds are essential to sustaining the team s continuation of our outreach and education programs, both costly endeavours. Along with monetary needs, the team depends upon the gracious time donated by our volunteer mentors, as their guidance is vital to our success. 5 of 10

7 Analysis Plan 4.1 Sponsorship & Fundraising Goals Granite Bay Robotics plans to improve through a variety of projects. Although we have an outreach program, it is not at the extent that we envision. Expansions to this program will include better and more materials for classes as well as better facilities for hosting such events. Part of our team s mission statements includes providing quality training for our own members, so in the future, we hope to gain increased mentorship and counsel. Funds seem to always be an issue for our team, so we also aim to increase our fundraising and marketing goals. Most importantly, due to the outstanding success we achieved in the 2013, 2015, and 2016 seasons, we are determined repeat our attendance to the world competition, where your company s logo can be seen on a global level. 4.2 Benefits As a potential sponsor, one question triumphs all. With your contributions the team is able to acquire the materials needed in order to compete in the FRC program, allowing students to deepen their knowledge of technology and business concepts not traditionally taught in schools.
