1 TO: FROM: All Interested San Mateo County 4 th, 5 th and 6 th Grade Teachers Carole Groom, San Mateo County Supervisor, Second District Warren Slocum, San Mateo County Supervisor, Fourth District DATE: May 23, 2016 SUBJECT: San Mateo County Math & Science Teacher Innovation Grant Deadline for the Math & Science Teacher Innovation Grant is extended to: October 4, 2016 Announcement of Award Recipients: October 20, 2016 Background: In 2005, the Board of Supervisors established the Math and Science Work Group to develop a strategic approach to promote and improve student achievement and teacher excellence in math and science by employing new strategies that engage and inspire students. The Work Group conducted Pilot Projects in 2005 including the establishment of the San Mateo County Innovation Fund. Grants were given to teachers with proposals that offered innovative and exciting ways to improve math and science instruction through student directed discovery. The Innovation Fund proved to be a universal success and we have continued to fund projects to enhance fourth, fifth and sixth grade math and science education. In the academic year, 11 awards were granted to 19 teachers for individual and collaborative STEM projects. Examples of a few of this year s projects are: Panarama Elementary School students in Brisbane learned about ecosystems using an aquaponics system where aquaculture (raising of fish) and hydroponics (soil- less growing of plants) were integrated into one ecosystem. Willow Oaks Elementary School in Menlo Park students studied earth science and the human impact on the environment in the past 50 years through reading non-fiction articles, combined with marine science field trips to the Pescadero marsh and beach to problem solving field analysis. Los Robles Elementary Students in East Palo Alto are learning about energy (wind, kinetic) as it applies to wind-powered water vehicles, designing their own prototype with the use of 3D software and printers. Experiential activities supports hands-on and minds-on student driven learning that often results in a deeper understanding of math and science. In recognition of the time constraints that may exist in implementation of projects that require more time than a single period during the school day, we have extended this opportunity to teachers for after school Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) programs. We encourage all 4th through 6th grade public school teachers to apply for this award. We fund a teacher s dream project which in turn supports a student to dream big. A primary objective of this award is to support teacher innovation throughout the County of San Mateo. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to your proposals!

The goal of this Math & Science Teacher Innovation Award is to fund hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) activities that deepen student engagement and understanding of the role math and science plays in our lives. Teacher-led projects may be implemented either during or after school. Preference will be given for sustainable projects that demonstrate an increased interest in STEM related careers. Who is eligible? San Mateo County 4 th -6 th grade public school teachers. Grant submissions must be made by teachers. Previous award recipients or past applicants may apply again. 4 Grant Reporting Requirements: Pre/post student survey results measuring student interest and engagement in math or science. End of the year teacher narrative regarding their program award funding. Create a poster of their project for display on a county website and displayed at a venue within the County of San Mateo. Presentation to math and/or science teachers in their school district. An additional 1 page budget summary with a breakdown of estimated costs is also required to complete your application.
