3 2013 CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMS FOR NONPROFITS Interact for Health is invested in helping nonprofits become self-sufficient. We have developed a series of programs in cooperation with SC Ministry Foundation to help nonprofits build the skills and resources necessary to continue their work after grants end. These programs are targeted to smaller nonprofit organizations that do not have staff positions devoted to evaluation, marketing, fundraising, and development. The programs also benefit nonprofit leaders expected to fill administrative roles beyond their education and experience. Because our programs are offered to nonprofits at a highly subsidized rate, we charge attendees who are not affiliated with a nonprofit the market rate. These rates are listed in this brochure. 8 PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS Interact for Health, in cooperation with SC Ministry Foundation, is offering the following programs in All programs are held at the Interact for Health Conference Facility unless otherwise noted. Directions to the Interact for Health Conference Facility can be found on page 18. Sign-in for each program begins 30 minutes before the program. Registration for a program closes 7 days before that program. Registration fees for all programs cover materials. Half-day morning programs (those that are three hours or shorter) include continental breakfast. Half-day afternoon programs (those that are three hours or shorter) include a midafternoon snack. Full-day programs (those longer than 3 hours) include continental breakfast and lunch. Please be sure to advise us of any dietary restrictions when you register. F Advanced Fundraising: Balancing Fundraising Efforts Want to analyze your annual fundraising plans to improve your agency s fundraising effectiveness? This workshop will cover how to diversify your efforts and strategies to improve your sustainability. This advanced program is for experienced fundraisers and those who have completed Introduction to Fundraising and are working on a sustainability plan. A team of people from your organization will have the opportunity to meet with a fundraising expert on Feb 22. These changes could include tax subsidies, the requirement to provide health insurance or grants for wellness programs. Darrin Scott Hunter, the head of Dish Design, will reveal how graphic designers think about communications challenges. Emphasis will be placed on typography in visual communications. Topics include basic terms, software platforms, text-setting guidelines, basic information-design principles, and the use of grids, styles and color. Hunter will show makeovers of reports submitted by participants and lead hands-on exercises using Microsoft Word. This class is designed for nonprofit staff members who write reports for their organization, but who do not have an internal communication or graphic design staff. Participants must bring their own charged laptops and submit for analysis and discussion several printed pieces they have designed. A well-written plan can make the difference in securing the necessary funding and interest. This session will break down the process into simple and easyto-follow steps for you to right-size a business plan for your needs, your organization, program or social enterprise. It will include an in-depth discussion of the best process and outline to follow as well as how to stand out from the crowd. This two-day workshop will address the issues of client recruitment and retention for social service, primary care and behavioral health treatment providers. The workshop will examine how to: change organizational culture from clients and interventions to customers and services ; move to active outreach and not just passive acceptance of referrals; identify and target customers; develop recruitment and retention plans; create process maps for program entry and at various program milestones; use data measure results; improve the quality of the first contact; identify critical events and factors that drive retention in the early stages of program participation. These tools let users create simple, effective tables, charts and maps of local data that inform policy and drive decision making. Course participants are required to bring a laptop computer; please call Lorraine Kawecki at with any concerns. Participants are encouraged to submit their organization s data before the workshop so that HealthLandscape staff members can show how powerful your data can be as a map. Or they can be a miserable, draining, money-losing proposition. During this workshop you will learn how to: Determine if an event is right for your organization, Set and achieve event-related goals, Craft events that resonate with your audience, and Use events strategically to build long-lasting relationships with your guests and strengthen your overall fundraising operation. There will be separate breakout sessions for small and large events. This workshop is appropriate for organizations already doing fundraising events as well as those considering a first-time event. 15 To register, visit or call ; registration ends 7 days before each program F Introduction to Fundraising E Mapping and Data Analysis Using the 2013 GCCHS Survey Small nonprofits often do not have development or fundraising staff, yet fundraising is vital to the organization. This two-day program will help you develop a fundraising plan and teach fundraising skills that leaders and board members can use to raise money. The last half of the second day focuses on working with board members. If an organization s staff member(s) attend the program, then one board member from the organization can attend this portion of the program for free. The survey includes questions about topics such as access and satisfaction with healthcare, medical debt, mental and physical health status, nutrition and exercise, and cigarette and alcohol use, among others. This workshop will show users how to analyze GCCHSS data using HealthLandscape and OASIS, two web-based tools developed by Interact for Health. Participants will learn to create simple, effective tables, charts and maps based on their topic of interest from the GCCHSS. These data are often used for grant applications, business and strategic planning, and policy decision-making. Course participants are required to bring a charged laptop. Social and mobile media has altered website design and marketing best practices. Attendees will gain practical knowledge about how to launch and maintain social media and mobile marketing campaigns for a nonprofit. Participants will learn how to create and edit simple Google Drive documents; to share, privately and publicly, with other Google Drive users; and to import and export their existing desktop files to and from Google Drive for increased productivity and collaboration. 20 All programs are held at the Interact for Health Conference Facility unless otherwise noted; see page 19 for directions PROGRAM REGISTRATION POLICIES Payment Policy Interact for Health offers programs to the staff, board members and volunteers of nonprofits at a subsidized rate as an investment in the community. People not affiliated with a nonprofit pay market rates. Participants spaces are not reserved until we accept payment. Therefore, we must receive the participant s program registration fee before the program for registration to be complete. Payment is accepted by credit card or by check made payable to Interact for Health. Please include registrant s name, organization and date of the program with the check. We do not accept purchase orders and we do not invoice participants organizations. Confirmation Interact for Health will send confirmation when registration information and payment are complete. When registering, please provide your address. Walk-in Registrations Walk-in registrations the day of a program normally cannot be accommodated. Program Cancellation Policy There is no penalty for cancellation before the registration deadline, which is seven days before the program. If is it necessary for us to cancel a program, registration fees will be returned. Because these programs are offered at a heavily subsidized rate, a valuable community resource is lost if participants register but do not attend. If a participant from a nonprofit organization has registered for an event and fails to cancel by the deadline and does not attend, the participant will be charged a cancellation fee. We will not refund registration fees if a participant cancels after the deadline or does not attend. Participants who register at the market rate and fail to cancel by the deadline and fail to attend will not receive a refund. Workshop Cancellation Procedures for Inclement Weather and Other Emergencies If a scheduled workshop needs to be canceled because of inclement weather or other emergency, every effort will be made to reschedule the workshop later. All people registered for the original workshop will be contacted to re-register for the new date before opening the workshop to new participants. Interact for Health will use the following procedures to notify registrants about workshop cancellations because of inclement weather and other emergencies: Interact for Health will send an to all workshop registrants using the address provided in registrant s record. We will record a cancellation message on the Events Information phone line at Registrants should call this number on the morning of the workshop to determine if the workshop has been canceled. We will attempt to contact each registrant by phone at the number in their record and will leave a voic message if necessary. We will notify the local television stations to include the cancellation in the list of school and business closings. The message will read Interact for Health: workshop canceled. Please review your record at org/ to make sure you have listed a phone number and address that provide the best opportunity to reach you in case of emergency cancellations. Substitution Policy Substitutions are possible when a registrant is unable to attend. To arrange a substitution, the original registrant should call If we are not informed of a substitution, we will likely turn away the substitute because we are expecting you.
