1. Please indicate the level of achievements of the project s original objectives and include any relevant comments on factors affecting this. Objective To introduce the project and involve targeted schools in the project implementati on To provide learning materials for education program To provide participants uniform and attributes Not achieved Partially achieved Fully Comments achieved The project socialization has been conducted to 18 junior and senior high schools in Brantas River watershed comprising schools in Batu Malang Municipality to schools in downstream areas at Surabaya, Gresik and Sidoarjo Municipality. The headwater springs in Batu feed its tributaries, including Surabaya River. All of the schools visited are welcome for the project and agree to get involve further in the project. ECOTON then organized event in each school for poster exhibition and multimedia presentation to disseminate information concerning water pollution, biodiversity richness and social benefit of Surabaya River for community in East Java Province. This activity has increase student s knowledge of environmental problems in Surabaya River that threats the sustainability of water source availability and threats human welfare in the future. The students were invited to join the project and followed up with an expedition to Surabaya River and conduct river study and monitoring. The project was planned to visit 12 schools, but in the implementation ECOTON had to visit more schools, since many schools ask to join the program. List of schools and pictures are shown in attachments. ECOTON produced campaign materials to support education and campaign implementation. The campaign materials produced in this project are: 1. Banners (50 units) 2. Posters (1000 copies) 3. Short Documentary Film (100 copies) 4. Fold out field guide of benthic macro invertebrate in Surabaya River (2000 copies) 5. Brochures (1000 copies) 6. Books (2000 copies) 7. Stickers (1000) ECOTON produced uniforms for Young River Detective in this project. Merchandise produced for students participants in this project are: 1. Pin Surabaya River Detective (100 pieces)

To introduce pollution sources, biodiversity and water pollution impacts to train children to monitor river pollution and present the result in monthly exhibition at public space 2. Bag (100 pieces) 3. T-Shirt (500 pieces) School students from each participated school were invited to have an expedition by boat along 20 km of Surabaya River. Through this expedition, the students have direct observation on river ecosystem that heavily polluted by industrial and domestic waste water. The students found many industries dispose untreated waste water into the river upstream, while the river also used by people downstream for washing and drinking. Students measured water quality along the river and taken macrobenthic samples to indicate water quality level. They also compared water quality and benthic biodiversity richness of upstream river section (moderately good condition) to downstream river section (heavily degraded and polluted). This expedition had introduced the students to their future water source, while it also showed that human activities along the river threat the water source sustainability and river function to maintain biodiversity. Through this expedition, the children learned that river is an integrated ecosystem from upstream to downstream that the river should be managed as one ecological system, instead of sectoral management that based on administrative borders presently implemented by the government in East Java Province. After joined this expedition, some students sent letters to governor that asking government to give more attention on water pollution control and to give punishment for polluter industries in Surabaya River. ECOTON provided training for delegation of students from schools in Batu, Sidoarjo, Gresik, and Surabaya. The training of environmental motivator students was held in PPLH Selolilan Trawas, a natural environmental education facility that have small river for field laboratory for river study. The students trained to plan, implement and make report of field research in river ecosystem. To encourage students doing field research, ECOTON organize a Surabaya River research report competition. The students can ask for assistance in doing their research from ECOTON team that visited their school or accompanied field research activities. Thirty research reports competed in the competition and the final competition was held at the office of Environmental

To measure achievemen ts and results Management Agency East Java (BAPEDAL). There are three referees that consist of university researcher and ECOTONs program manager. The research results from each school students were also exhibited to public in a public event called Children Festival for Surabaya River that was held at football field on the river bank of Surabaya River in Gresik. The children festival was attended by various government agency and community groups such as delegation of Ministry of Environment Indonesia, East Java provincial secretary, head of Environmental Management Agency (BAPEDAL), member of house of representatives Gresik, Perum Jasa Tirta as Brantas River operator, NGOs (Green Peace, WALHI-Friends of the Earth), industries, school and university students, university researchers, water users and media reporters. Every three month ECOTON held internal meeting to measure achievements and progress of the project. We also have discussion and interview with teachers concerning children s progress and interest on the project. At the end of the project we have a final evaluation meeting with teachers. This project has built networking of schools in Brantas River watershed to develop Brantas River monitoring group in each schools. It has given chance for village schools such as in Sidoarjo and Gresik to see outside world, that it promotes them to develop more outing activities for students, not only to study in school, and to introduce environmental problems around them and try to solve the problems. They expected that this project to be continuously planned to other students in their schools. 2. Please explain any unforeseen difficulties that arose during the project and how these were tackled (if relevant) Since most of targeted schools were interested to join this project and committed to involve from the beginning, we did not have any difficulties. We even have more support from the government agency (Environmental Management Board) in East Java Province that provided room for final competition of Surabaya River field research. Ministry of Environment Indonesia and Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation also supporting funds for Surabaya River research competition and children festival that was not cover by RSG funds.

3. Briefly describe the three most important outcomes of your project. 1. Formation of Surabaya River Detective Team in each 18 participated schools. The students in that team are committed to monitor water quality of Surabaya River regularly as extracurricular activity in their school. This project has increase children knowledge in river ecology and conservation to preserve the main water source for people in East Java Province. It builds environmental awareness of children that the water pollution should be controlled and reduced to main water quality of Surabaya River as raw water for drinking water supply for 5 million people in Surabaya City and surrounding areas. The young water detectives have more attention to Surabaya River than before joining this project. They conduct river monitoring activity and updating information concerning Surabaya River water pollution and river management regularly. They will report to ECOTON or directly contact media reporters when they know any river incidents such as mass fish mortality or untreated waste disposal from industries near her/his house or schools. Some students also make continuation research of their previous field research in Surabaya River ecology, such as a research to identify biodiversity richness of riparian insects in Surabaya River. The schools also built Surabaya River Detective network to share their monitoring result or to arrange school activities together, such as comparative study to other school that participated in the project. 2. Surabaya River Detective s report through media release and letter to government has given pressure for government to improve water pollution control in Surabaya River. There are three polluter industries taken to court for polluting Surabaya River. Surabaya River Detective attended a talk show in local television JTV to introduce this team to public and share their findings and their hopes on Surabaya River. Through children festival for Surabaya River, local community near Surabaya River got information concerning river pollution, biodiversity and their rights through exhibition of children s study reports in Surabaya River Detective team. The children also invited in a general meeting of House of Representatives East Java Province to report their findings and their recommendation for Brantas River management. The report shown that Surabaya River are very important and it still possess high biodiversity that should be protected for sustainability of river function to support human life. 3. This project continues voluntarily by school members of Surabaya River Detective Team. We have a plan to develop a continuation project to preserve riparian land and river through river adoption program. We will manage a riparian land to be used for biodiversity conservation and natural field laboratory to learn ecology of Surabaya River. We have proposed this plan to the government authority to get the land use permit. 4. Briefly describe the involvement of local communities and how they have benefited from the project (if relevant). Local communities involve in this project in giving information for Surabaya River Detective when conducting study in Surabaya River. The people are very welcome and they like to share information to the children. Local communities also hope the river to be free from pollution. Surabaya River is very important for them as water source and provides economic income for river fishermen and sand miners. Water quality deterioration and sedimentation threat river s functions to support sustainable living for local community.

The children s activity in studying Surabaya River ecology and functions for people has been publish in various media that more people aware on Surabaya River condition that heavily polluted and it encourage more people to participate in doing effort to prevent further deterioration of Surabaya River. Local community become more enthusiastic to report any environmental problems and river pollution incidents to media such as Suara Surabaya, a famous radio station that receive complains from public for the government. Surabaya River pollution became a hot issue in this radio dialog since many complains was received by the radio station. Involvement of children in this project also influenced their surrounding community, especially the children s family. Their parents supported their activity in Surabaya River Detective Team and it is not difficult for the children to get permit to go out for a field work after school or at week ends. The parents also become more active and participate in doing effort to prevent water pollution of Surabaya River, such as do not dispose garbage into the river anymore but try to make compost from their organic garbage. The parents also become the river watcher and they will report unusual condition about the river to their children in Surabaya River Detective Team. The government involvement is also significant, since they become more responsive to community reports. After get reported by Surabaya River Detective Team, BAPEDAL as environmental management agency in East Java Province brought three polluter industries to court and presently it still in legal process. This project also gives benefit for local community in Brantas River watershed by providing information in Brantas River condition and it also have potency to be developed as ecotourism site since it still possess high biodiversity and supporting natural environment. The river detective s reports in various media have increased access of information for local community that increased community awareness to protect Brantas River from further deterioration. Government control in water pollution has been increased and through this project, hopefully we will build better future generation with increased environmental awareness and environmental friendly generation that aware on their own natural potency and respect their nature to use it wisely for sustainable development and sustainable prosper society. 5. Are there any plans to continue this work? Yes, the school members of Surabaya River Detective Team have a plan to continue this environmental education program in each school and to continue the Surabaya River ecology research competition every year. The schools affiliation also plans to develop a project of Surabaya River adoption to preserve riparian land and river section. We have plan to release local fishes into the river to preserve fish population in Brantas River that decreases almost every year of dry season when the plenty of fishes killed by untreated waste water disposal from irresponsible polluter industries in Brantas River watershed. 6. How do you plan the share the results of you work with others. We shared the results through teacher s workshop and to teacher s network for environmental education in East Java. We also publish our result on ecoton s website, environmental education and water conservation mailing list, and releases to media such as at national magazine TEMPO, teenage magazine Go Girl and television channel such as local television Jawa Timur Television (JTV), national television Metro TV and

also Asian television in Singapore Channel Asia. Radio stations in Indonesia also publish our river detective project such as Suara Surabaya, BBC Indonesia version and Radio Singapore. We will continue to share the results to more media and to more schools in East Java and in Indonesia. 7. Timescale: Over what period was the RSG used? How does this compares to the anticipated or actual length of the project? The implementation time of the project has to be extended due to adjustment to school s schedule and addition of schools participated in this project. The project was planned to be implemented in 12 months but the actual length was extended to 16 months. Our timetable was as follows. No. Activities May Jun Jul Aug Sep Nov Des Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep 1. Project Socialization 2. Producing educated materials 3. Producing merchandise 4. Surabaya River Expedition 5. 8 9. Looking ahead, what do you feel are the important next steps? We will continue to develop environmental education for children in more schools in East Java and in Indonesia to prepare better future generation that aware on environmental sustainability in every action and decision of their life. The children should be introduced to natural potency we have, that has been disregard by most people and even by our own government. They should become aware on our natural potency that should be developed wisely towards sustainable living. We will also combine it with advocacy to give pressure to government to improve environmental management in Indonesia. 10. Did you use the RSGF logo in any materials produced in relation to this project? Did the RSGF receive any publicity during the course of your work? Yes, we put RSG logo in all campaign materials such as posters, banners, books, brochures etc., and also in merchandise produced for river detective uniform such as t-shirts and pins. In publicity at media we also stated that this project was supported by The Rufford Small Grant for Nature Conservation. 11. Any other comments?
